RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-14-2023

Stanford upsets LSU 3-2.  More later.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-14-2023

All three wins were in 3 sets. Wow

Just when I was starting to think this might not be the year of the Cardinal.  Exciting win by Stanford's #1 team.

LSU with six sand courts.  Nice facility.  Their athletic department must be all in on beach volleyball.

Collegiate Beach Volleyball’s premiere venue was unveiled to the media on Jan. 14, 2019, in the heart of LSU’s campus.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-14-2023

Yes, six courts with live streams on each.  Their scoreboard isn't quite as nice as Stanford's but certainly adequate.
Seemed to be some partial obstruction of the camera on court 1, obscuring the left side.  Maybe a protective net or something.

I did not see the 4-1 win over North Florida (UNF won at the 5s).  Against LSU, the first round of matches were teams 4 through 7 (the latter two exhibitions).  Andersson & Kubiak at the 5s won their first set, dropped the second, and got pummeled in the third.  OTOH, Belardi & Vincent at the 4s dropped their first set, but came back to win the second and third.  So the dual was tied 1-1.

Then they played the 1s, 2s, and 3s.  Reilly & Sharp at the 3s went down in two sets.  I was mostly watching the first two courts. Ekstrom & Harvey won their first, but Hodel & Kriz lost. The second set was a reversal, so both matches went to three.  By that point, LSU was up 2-1. Ekstrom & Reilly finished first, with Ekstrom hammering a kill for the match (scores:  21-16, 14-21, 15-11; such a seesaw).  That tied the dual.

I believe Hodel & Kriz were up 8-7 at the that switch, and then gradually pulled away, and also finished it 15-11.  It was well after 8pm in Baton Rouge, but still about 75 degrees.

I hope there is no let-up tomorrow against Houston Baptist and Nicholls.  Though thunderstorms are in the forecast.

And... Ashley Vincent now has the Stanford record for most wins by an individual player in a single season of BVB.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-15-2023

Stanford's schedule and tweets said the dual versus Houston Christian (FKA Houston Baptist) would start at 7:15am PT.  I happened to be up, so started watching at 7:10 - at which point the first set was already over, or well under way.  Maybe they started early because of the weather.

Mixed results for Stanford so far.  They aren't used to playing this early.

Stanford's 3s come through 21-10, 21-13.
But the 5s fall 14-21, 16-21. The other matches are going three sets.

And HCU wins 3-2.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-15-2023

I just looked at Twitter and the score must have been posted late
Very discouraging after the big win yesterday

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-15-2023

The next match has been cancelled due to weather. Probably cost a win
John you nailed it early Houston christian was due to bad weather coming

The AVP happens to be playing in New Orleans this weekend, and posted this video of the storm this morning:

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2023

Stanford remains steady at #10 in the poll.  LSU slipped one place, swapping with LMU.
UCLA is back at #1.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-19-2023

Looking ahead to next week, I found the bracket for the Pac-12 BVB championship:
https://static.pac-12.com/sports/volleyball-b/pdf/2023Championship/2023_BVB_Bracket.pdf

I'd guess the top 4 seeds will be UCLA, USC, Cal and Stanford - in that order, unless Stanford can beat Cal this Friday.

You'd think Pac-12.com would provide the Pac-12 standings for beach volleyball, but you would be wrong.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-19-2023

Here's my compilation of records, from the nine schools' websites:

The second column is what the website says is the school's conference record; the third is what you get if you count all their intraconference duals.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-21-2023

Stanford upset both GCU and Cal 4-1 today.  A beautiful day for beach volleyball.

https://gostanford.com/news/2023/4/21/beach-volleyball-two-top-10-upset-victories.aspx

Tomorrow they play Santa Clara and Pacific, with senior day ceremony after the Pacific match (scheduled to start at 5pm; more likely 5:30, so ending around sunset).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-22-2023

For eight of their last nine duals (starting with the Pac-12 North) Stanford has used the same top four teams:
(1) Hodel & Kriz
(2) Eckstrom & Harvey
(3) Reilly & Sharp
(4) Belardi & Vincent

The exception was against Oregon, when apparently Harvey and Sharp were being rested.  Reilly moved up to #2, and Belardi & Vincent played at the 3s.  It was a sweep.

OTOH, there has been a lot of variety at the 5s, with various combinations of Andersson, Wilson, Kubiak, Clarke, Turner and Gusarova seeing playing time.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-22-2023

I didn't see Stanford sweep Santa Clara, but I was there for their sweep of Pacific.  (Though I missed the first several points, because they actually started early.)  Even though they rested the usual #1s and #4s.  So all the seniors got to play today (though not Kriz in the last dual).

Khazendar & Matheson struggled a bit in the second set, but ultimately prevailed.

Seeding for the Pac-12 tournament will be announced "soon".  Sunday?  Monday, at the latest, I guess.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-23-2023

Pacific is 0-20.  Maybe they were scheduled with the anticipation of getting more players involved for the final match.

Stanford loses a player on the #1 team and the #2 team to graduation.  Hard to know if Stanford will be better or about the same next season.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-23-2023

Ekstrom & Kriz are a big loss.    But this year's freshmen have made significant contributions and with another year of training and experience should be ready to move up.

RichKern.com lists five incoming freshmen for next year, including 6'2" Clara Stowell from Manhattan Beach.

His list does not include Ruby Sorra, who seems to be one of the best young beach players in Canada. Six feet tall, she has played in a few FIVB events. And is scheduled to play in tournament in Brazil this week.  Looks like there are too many higher ranked teams entered; they won't even make it into the qualifier.

So, I'm expecting an incremental improvement next year.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-24-2023

Looks like Cal held on to the #3 seed.  Stanford will open against #5 Washington at 1:45 pm Wednesday.

Stanford beat them early in the season (in LA), 3-2.  That was with Ekstrom/Reilly at #1 and Hodel/Kriz #2.

If they win that dual, they will play again Thursday at 10:15, probably vs. Cal.  UCLA (corrected).
