Hope you guys didn't bet much on Final Jeopardy.

That cheer did not originate in some foreign country; it originated in our Armed Forces. A student at the Naval Academy Prep School took it with him to USNA (first unveiled at the 1999 Army-Navy game) and thence across the country/world.

It came from Midshipmen

I thought it had an American tone.  It's optimistic, with a bit of a militaristic chant.  I like it, but I've only been following soccer since 1980, I'm a bit of a piker.

Read some of the EPL chants, then let's talk.

Re: OT: FIFA officials charged with bribery - jacketree - 05-29-2015

Here's an even better piece on the chant:

America. F Yeah!!

Chant was used outside Bancroft Hall after Seal Team 6 took out Bin Laden.  Changed to "I believe that we have won."

Re: OT: FIFA officials charged with bribery - dabigv13 - 05-29-2015

I know about the origin, doesn't change the fact that it's a dumb chant.

Re: OT: FIFA officials charged with bribery - jacketree - 05-29-2015

Well, Terry thought it sounded foreign.  He stands corrected.  And of course you are free to think it is a dumb chant.  Thanks in no small part to the guys who made it up.

I guess I should have added a smiley face to my comment!  ;)

I must have been banned, by Cardboard or NSA.  I have been posting pithy, relevant, on point and on topic links for a year yet today whenever I have tried my browser has closed.  Is it time to upgrade from my Apple IIC?  I have been waiting, as my father did with color TVs, until they have perfected computers before I invest in soon to be outdated tech.  Besides, it like pictures made from Xs and Os.

I don't know about the chant.  Kinda cool in a sorta reverse-psych, semi-macho, throw-'em-off-guard-by-confusing-'em way.  But the video is absolutely excellent!

::)  I grew up on Navy bases so please spare me. The Navy does a lot of things right, a lot of things poorly, and I've never known Midshipmen to be expert at coming up with sports chants. Clearly it's a matter of personal taste, but I'll lay out the reason for my disdain: there is nothing clever about it, nothing fierce about it, nothing particularly musical about it, nothing unique about it. As noted there is a certain militaristic charm to it and the call and response aspect is kind of cool in a live setting.

I believe that we will win? That's kind of a bare minimum chant; if I fleshed it out the first verse could be I believe that we won't lose, the second verse I believe that we probably won't draw, the third verse in fact, I believe we might even win! Ugh.

UPDATE: Sepp Blatter resigns - BostonCard - 06-02-2015

Just one week after getting re-elected, Sepp Blatter steps down amidst the corruption probe.  FIFA tried to spin this one as sour grapes on the part of the US after we lost our bid, but it became clear that the corruption was more widespread than FIFA wanted to make it appear.  This became apparent yesterday when the New York Times linked Blatter's #2 in command (Jerome Valke) to the corruption inquiry for funneling $10 million on behalf of South Africa following their winning bid to host the 2010 world cup.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/02/sports/soccer/sepp-blatters-top-fifa-deputy-jerome-valcke-is-said-to-have-transferred-money-central-to-bribery-case.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=a-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

Quote:American prosecutors, however, say the bribery scheme played out over several years. In 2004, as FIFA’s executive committee considered where to host the 2010 World Cup, South Africa’s government agreed to pay Mr. Warner and others $10 million in exchange for their votes, according to the indictment.

Mr. Warner voted for South Africa, but in the months and years after the vote, South Africa was unable to pay. So rather than take a payment directly from South Africa, the indictment says, FIFA itself paid Mr. Warner in 2008, using money that would otherwise have gone to South Africa to support the World Cup.

So today Sepp Blatter stepped down...

I'm guessing it won't be long before Blatter is named in an indictment (and almost certainly Valke).  Of course, by then, they will safely be residents of countries that don't have extradition treaties with the US.  See, for example, this item tucked at the end of the first article:

Quote:FIFA announced Monday that, “due to the current situation,” Mr. Valcke would not attend the opening of the Women’s World Cup in Canada next week. “It is important that he attends to matters at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich,” the organization said in a news release.

Is Zurich safe enough?  I think these FIFA officials will discover a need to check on the progress of facilities in Qatar or perhaps Russia or anywhere else that will not conduct raids on behalf of the USA.

Given that this happened a week after the elections I find it amazing that FIFA thought the elections last week were a good idea.

Re: OT: FIFA officials charged with bribery - BostonCard - 06-02-2015

And just like clockwork, now Sepp Blatter is "under investigation"

(note, no new story, but the NYTimes article headline is "Blatter Is Under Investigation, Officials Say")

Quote:By SAM BORDEN, MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT and MATT APUZZO 1:42 PM ET
Sepp Blatter resigned his position as president of world soccer’s governing body on Tuesday as law enforcement officials confirmed that he was a focus of a corruption investigation.

Being the vindictive sort that I am (and really w/o a dog in this hunt), I wish they could strip these bastards of every nickel in their possession and any that they may have coming.  Don't send them to jail.  That is far too unclear.  It would be nice to force them to live in abject poverty for the rest of their miserable lives.

Good article about the British journalist who exposed FIFA's corruption --

Re: OT: FIFA officials charged with bribery - GoodGrief - 06-03-2015

From the article that Terry linked:
Quote:“My phone started ringing at six in the morning,” Jennings said Tuesday from his farm in the hilly north of England. “I turned it off actually to get some more sleep, because whatever is happening at six in the morning is still going to be there at lunch time, isn’t it?”

“I know that they are criminal scum, and I’ve known it for years,” he said. “And that is a thoughtful summation. That is not an insult. That is not throwing about wild words.”

“I’m surrounded by all these terribly posh reporters in suits and silk ties and buttoned up shirts, for God’s sake,” he remembered. “And here’s me in me hiking gear. I get the mike and I said, ‘Herr Blatter, have you ever taken a bribe?'”

‘Here I am. I’m your boy. I’m not impressed by these tossers. I know what they are. I’ve done it to the IOC, and I’ll do it to them.'”

“It’s been a very happy week since they got that knock on that door,” he admitted. “It’s nice to know that Herr Blatter won’t be able to sleep tonight. And that he’ll finally get to sleep around half past five. And at six o’clock someone will slam a car door outside and he’ll be shooting out of bed and under the bed. Serves him right. He’s not a nice man.”

“I just hope I can afford the airfare to New York and that someone will let me sleep on their couch,” he said, “so that I can be there in the [courthouse] press box to say, ‘Hi guys! It’s been a long run, hasn’t it?’”

This Jennings guy sounds like the most awesome curmudgeon over. I'd pay good money just to listen to him talk about people he hates or heck, even the weather and what he ate for breakfast.

And this is how evil falters--when even a single good person steps up to the plate and doesn't back down.  We also owe a lot to the unnamed sources who supplied Jennings with evidence.  They too demonstrated great courage, but it was Jennings who carried the torch for others to follow.

Just to clarify, while the piece was very important in bringing public awareness of corruption in FIFA, the US investigation was spurred by a tax evasion case against Chuck Blazer, a CONCACAF general secretary, who then agreed to become a state's witness and wear a wire.
