No. Something about the process makes it less healthy.
If you're looking for a warm beverage with less caffeine, I recommend Hank's recommendation: green tea. Both my grandmothers drank that stuff non-stop and lived to ~90. One was a chain smoker.

They put chicory in the coffee in New Orleans and usually serve it au lait. Cafe au lait with beignets at Cafe du Monde . . . good stuff.

Thanks for the report Publius. I'm jealous. If you get a chance, watch his TV show. I think it is as amazing as his coffee.

Caffeinated drinks have both wired me and also put me to sleep rapidly (not at the same time). I'm unclear on what that means except that I must be broken.

Me, too, fullmetal. Just returned today from a Pacific crossing. About midnight my routine was a double espresso and a flamed Sambuca. Slept like a baby. Maybe it was the combination?Â

Great, great call. We had the machines, but my kids got bored with them pretty quickly.

I'd love to see an academic paper on people who have natural proclivities; some people are accident-prone, some people like Publius have weird things happen to them. My oldest son is the luckiest person I've ever met; when he needs something somewhat or highly improbable it happens. And I can't explain it. No idea how or why it happens. He's the guy who gets the parking space right in front of the venue where even overflow parking is jammed; the guy who gets tickets that no one else can, the guy who gets a job at a firm that has had a hiring freeze for a year.
I don't get it, I really don't. I'd love to know the scientific explanation behind those things, hoping of course that it is something other than a normal bell curve distribution of people and realizing that it probably isn't

A few years back, the then-brand-new Microsoft store at Valleyfair (across from the Apple store) had a promotion in which the general public could compete with a store geek in searching the mobile web via their mobile device. Contest was based on speed, first to complete their search on their mobile device (via the Microsoft store wireless) won the prize; said prize was a laptop. The point was to prove that the Microsoft device had quicker access than whatever piece of Apple/Blackberry/Google sheeit you had withering away in your pocket.
The promo was stacked against the general public in a hundred ways, but a free laptop is a free laptop. So Mrs. Mick gets in line with roughly two thousand twenty-somethings to have her try at a free laptop.
One of the ways the deck was stacked was that there were six basic searches. So the store employee had performed each of the six searches hundreds of times. Each of the paeans in line were allowed just one try at the search.Â
Mrs. Mick, more than double the age of the whippersnappers ends up winning the laptop much to the admiration of the gaggle of 5'3" people in line who were trying to get this thing? How? Lots of luck, a little preparation. Her iPhone won the battle.

The retrospectively obvious tip to making great coffee at home -

TL;DR: the variation in water hardness across the country explains a lot of the difference in coffee quality.
This explains why I get the best results from a local roaster's beans. Duh. Since we double filter water at home, I'm wondering if I will get even better results from Charbucks beans.
Re: Dangerous Grounds -
martyup - 06-07-2014
That explains a lot. We've got very hard water here in Utah. Our RO filter system does not de-mineralize the water. Many of the coffee beans we've tried cup bitter. Now the task is to find the best bean for our water. La Columbe's Roma is excellent with our water.
We get great coffee from the local water in San Jose -
Mick - 06-07-2014
I put a half cup of vinegar in the dishwasher to reduce the mineral buildup on our glasses, but I still get streaks. Our coffee is good and strong, yeah...

I heard that a company called Pentair is coming out with a new deionization system for household water . . . will remove minerals without any salt like softeners have. I have not seen in market yet, but should be a boon for all of us fighting water quality issues.Â

Coffee on I-5? I like Nancy's Airport Cafe just off Highway 162 at the Willows/Glenn County Airport.
Yup...great breakfasts, too...biscuits and gravy especially. Just
ate there this week on my back from Davis. Strangely, my wife feels some zombie-like attraction to the Denny's in Williams.

I can kinda see why your wife would rather go to Denny's than Nancy's.

1-1.5 hours each way? I moved to the Boston area so I wouldn't have to do that any more.... If that's the case, then you'll need a good beer each day when you get home, so Garvin's comment stands!
