And by the looks of things, Petrino is likely to accept. Good luck to them, in the words of Gregg Easterbrook, when you hire a coach who is only in it for themselves, you get a coach who is only in it for themselves:

The scenario I'm worrying about now is Franklin to Penn State, and Vandy hiring Mason. The fit is good because of the academics there.

Some interesting stuff there... first that Penn State is going after Greg Roman. Second that Franklin may have interviewed at Penn State but turned them down.

Franklin leaving Vandy would be one of those danger situations. On one hand -- strictly in a selfish sense -- we want Vandy to be bad (just as we'd also like Duke, N.D., and UCLA to falter relative to their current status). On the other hand, they might well hire Mason. So, you know, risk and reward.

How many recruits do we lose to Vandy and how often do we play them? I worry more about UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, the top B1G schools (Penn State, Michigan) and maybe Cal as programs who we lose recruits to, and frequently play. Vandy and Duke I don't worry about much.

Strictly selfishly, I'd like to add USC, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, USC, UW, WSU, USC, Oregon, Michigan State, Florida State, Auburn, USC, Oregon State, South Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, USC, Clemson, Ohio State, Baylor and USC to that list. Also if kal were a teensy bit worse, I wouldn't shed a tear.

Stanford does not really lose recruits to Vandy or Duke because they have both been terrible. If either program had a run of winning, presumably the recruits Stanford gets from Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and other southern states might opt for this mythical Vandy/Duke powerhouse program. In that sense, the rise of Vandy/Duke could probably impact Stanford in a unique way. Notre Dame will always be very cold to a kid from Atlanta. USC and UCLA are also very far away from home preventing the family from driving to the games. Vandy and Duke are close to home AND have rather strong academics. Their theoretical rise would hurt Stanford.
Over the last 20-40 years they have not been good, but if they get a string of winning seasons Stanford fans would discover a new worry that would hurt because proximity to home is a powerful recruiting tool.

Supposedly Vanderbilt's offering James Franklin a contract for 10! years! 50! million! dollars!

Has a Jeff Tedfordy feel about that contract.
