- The Cardinal MF clearly dominated, but it wasn’t always clear how on TV. The camera is just too tight a lot of the time.
- I am not sure that Kohler was ever really playing DM. It briefly looked like it to start half 2, but if so it didn’t last very long. I would guess it was just some position rotation for coverage. But by say minute 38, SLS is clearly at DM.
- that said UCLA kept finding space for balls straight up the middle on the ground at the end of half 1; so maybe Kohler at DM was the solution to briefly plug the hole.
- Winn was a constant menace and Kohler was her normal excellent self.
- nice game for Stewart - mostly quiet but she handled the emergencies well.
- Bray got a bunch of minutes mostly at RM and then at RB too after getting very few minutes earlier and looked decent overall. Mostly at the expense of Noe.
- Williams was up and down in her first start. A couple of dangerous turnovers and a few other ball handling issues on the bad side of the ledger. But her defense was good and she moved the attack forward a number of times.
- Holden does have a knack at burrowing and barging through defensive traffic.
- Thomas was in good places this game, but did nothing with it including one awful miss. For now I will look at that as a step in the right direction.
- the third goal was a really nice team movement.

Caught a few moments of the streamed WSoc match vs Cal State Fullerton, which ended in a 7-0 wipeout in favor of Stanford. 7 different players scored, and I suppose the biggest surprise is that none of the scorers were named Charlotte Kohler. However, according to the live stats, CK had 2 assists in 59 minutes. I saw the first assist where CK cankled the defender and delivered a beautiful setup to Milly Bray.

Next up for WSoc is a home game at 7 pm Thursday vs the University of Satan's Children.

- Stewart had a really spectacular game in goal today, including one particularly amazing 1 v 1 save. I feel really confident with her in goal now.
- A ton a terrific goals by our offense including an Olimpico from Leal-Schuman, a header goal on a corner from defender Emri (so happy to see the joy on her face after she was out so long with her injury), and an absolute rocket of a goal from Marinos (good to see our highest-rated freshman striker get going). I love that the team kept going at it until the very end. They were hungry and they feasted.
- Holden drew a penalty and they let her take it. I was a bit surprised as I hadn't seen her take penalties before and I thought they might want to let Kohler try to extend her goal streak. But Holden deserved the chance and her strike was true.
- The defense got its fifth straight shutout, which continues their longest streak to open the season since 2014. Though CSF certainly had a couple chances (including one shot off the post). CSF has a decent offense. They scored 2 goals on the road vs Colorado last week.
- Stanford already has 19 goals, with 11 different players scoring this season—out of just 21 field players who have seen the pitch. One notable exception is Jaden Thomas, who has started all five games at left forward and has taken 15 shots without finding the net. You have to wonder if the drought is weighing on her. Still hoping one goes in soon and opens the floodgates. She does have 1 assist though.

I give Fullerton credit for still going for it until the end (instead of parking the bus and trying to keep the score more respectable). Stanford's counter-attacks were vicious. It's so fun to watch this team do their thing when they have a little space to operate.

I believe this action is part of the settlement between Stanford and Katie's parents. Also, I think Katie's younger sister saw the pitch when Stanford played UCLA.

I'm not sure what else to add. As a parent (and a human), Katie's death is heartbreaking whenever I am reminded of it. I can't imagine what the family is still enduring.

In any case, as usual I defer to anyone on the Board who is more in the know re: the jersey retirement and other acknowledgements for Katie Meyer.

I suppose we were due to have a game where it was clear a bunch of key players were missing.

- in the first half the forwards were universally miserable, crowned by Thomas missing an open net by a mile early in half 2. In the second half, Holden was excellent including the second goal. Winn was somewhat better in half 2, but she is interesting to watch. She is a very long strider and is scary running at you or behind you, but she isn’t that effective in small spaces or back to goal.
- Marinos skied a second open net chance with seconds left to win the game. Sigh.
- I wouldn’t play Grillione beyond garbage time. She remains a turnover machine. The first USC goal was off a loose pass to Bray - though Bray was soft to the ball and had 2 more chances to shut the attack down; so it wasn’t all on Grillione.
- Kohler was the best player on the field by a mile.
- First meaningful minutes for Emri and minus an immediate turnover, she looked good. She hits an elite long ball out of the back that I haven’t seen from anyone else on the team.
- Bray did some good things but has to toughen up on defense. See goal 1 comments above, and she was heavily involved in the second USC goal. She got beat first badly, then Williams got beat around the end line, somebody (SLS? Freer? Can’t tell with the tight switching cameras) lost her mark, and finally Stewart can’t get beat near post on a shot that soft.
- Williams struggled top to bottom. Rough defense and she wasn’t able to integrate into the attack at all.
- SLS got pulled with about 25 minutes left when Emri came on and Young moved to DM. I am curious if that was tactical or injury? I wouldn’t have rated her as a key defensive issue, but again it’s hard to tell on TV. Really would be nice to get Bhuta back.

You are talking about WSoc of course.
But someone could get confused by the WBB FIBA World Cup match between Italy and US which starts now (Sunday 11:30AM PDT) on TNT.

Easy win.
Not much to say in a 4:0 win - the team played well and put away an inferior team in the first half. The game got ragged the last 10 minutes, but it was over by that point. The third goal was a beautiful team counterattack.

The big things were:
1. Thomas finally had a big game - 3 goals and an assist to Kohler. I hope she can keep the momentum going, but there were some signs of life the last few games. So fingers crossed. It’s a big deal if she can be consistently effective.
2. We have a Bhuta sighting - she came in at RM in the first half and looked fine.

I will single out Bray for doing a bunch of really good work in possession that won’t show in the box score. She was better on defense too, but her small size can make it challenging.

A few cracks on defense though. One bad Smith turnover almost turned into a goal (shot off the crossbar) and the color guy got it right - that same diagonal run/through ball issue I mentioned from the USC game showed up a bit again. That is something they need to work on.

This was Stanford's first road game of the season. The next one will be as tough as it gets - at #2 Duke a week from today.

The US lost its U20 World Cup opener to Italy 2-1. Boamah and Birkel played the entire game. Nguyen did not play.

I am really unimpressed watching the U20s. They have 7 NWSL players though they don’t all start, but it looks like a meh college team out there. High effort, moderate skill with limited tactics. Of course a number of key players weren’t released - no Yohannes, Bugg or Hutton among several others. But nobody on the field impressed me at this level, and they have no difference makers that I could see. The RB was just bad.

They had a last second goal called back for a correct but unnecessary offsides. That wasted the one special action of the day for the US.

Caveats:
1. Italy is theoretically the lowest seed in the group, but it’s based on the last 5 U20s so they may actually be good.
2. U20s can still be very up and down game to game. They are just still too inexperienced.
3. The key play on the first Italy goal would have gotten you a 15 yd blindside block flag in the NFL. Ludicrous no call. Overall a poor, poor referee.

Overall, Boamah was OK. She is fast, but shows her inexperience at CB at times. She had no major disasters, did some good things and was only slightly involved in the first goal. My one is worry is she got beat on pretty badly.

Birkel honestly was bad. On the first goal, she couldn’t hold onto the ball on an on-goal situation and the ball bounced around to an Italian player for a tap in. Not an easy play, but she didn’t do anything good with it. She also simply dropped/deflected a high cross she has to catch right to an Italian forward on the second goal. Finally, I don’t remember any difficult saves to mitigate the mistakes. Not a good day.

All that said, even though the top 4 of 6 third place teams move on, I would say 30-40% chance they don’t get out of the group. So we my have 3 players back more quickly than I expected.

Thanks! Goal scorers get all the glory, but often (as in this case) the play was actually made by the player feeding the goal scorer.
