The ACC women's golf tournament begins tomorrow with 36 holes of stroke play on Thursday and 18 more on Friday. After that, the low 8 teams will proceed to match play with quarters and semis on Saturday and the final on Sunday. The tournament is being played at Porter's Neck CC in Wilmington, NC, a Tom Fazio course. Looks to me like the course has a lot of trees and a lot of water.

Stanford is in the first groups off #1 tee starting at 4:30 am pacific. The lineup is exactly what you expect - Xu, Ortengren, Ganne, Revuelta, Martin Sampedro.

We technically finished at -13 tied with Duke after Round 1 if I can read.

Off to a good start in R2 with Stanford suddenly at -17 and Duke dropping to -12.

I think we can say with high confidence that Stanford will finish in the top 8 after today's stroke play final round and will advance to match play tomorrow.

Midway through the final round, Stanford has maintained a 12 shot cushion over SMU. Paula Martin Sampedro and Rianne Malixi (who are playing together) are engaged in a terrific battle for the individual championship. With 9 holes to play, Martin Sampedro has a 2 shot lead.

What results like this tells me is that the lofty rankings of our players manifests itself only in a large sample size (e.g., 3-4 rounds of stroke play). For a smaller sample size (e.g., 1 round or match play), anything can happen. In the first round, Duke kept pace with us (-13 for both). Today, SMU and Wake Forest are keeping pace with us (-10 for all three). But nobody has kept pace with us across three rounds.

It seems rough that Stanford has only won 2 NCAA Championships in the past 5 seasons, despite winning stroke play for 5 years in a row. But they've had match play at NCAA's since 2015 and, in that time, no other college has won both stroke play and the championship. It's literally designed to create chaos (and TV ratings).

Is this more random than the NCAA basketball tournament? Single basketball games are quite random, and you have to win seven games instead of three matches.

Based on unaudited Claude analysis, the pre-tournament favorite has won 2 of the last 10 men's tournaments and 5 of the last 10 women's tournaments (where there are usually a few dominant teams).

Also worth mentioning that match play is a traditional championship format in golf and was the original format for most/all golf competitions.

I'm a Stanford fan, but I am also a golf fan and I love the NCAA format. Match play tests a golfer in a different way compared to medal or stroke play. From a fan's perspective, it's more exciting and more interesting. And I think Stanford has what it takes to win at either medal or match play.

Starting with the ACC tournament final. Stanford defeated Duke 3-0 today in the semis (probably would have ended 4-1 if the other two matches had been completed) and will play SMU tomorrow in the finals starting at 9 am eastern.

The women were overwhelming:
M Ortengren, -5 over 14

A Revuelta, -3 over 18

Sampedro, the stroke play winner, was -26 for her five rounds. Then Ortengren -11, Revuelta -10, Xu -9,
Ganne -7.

Stanford is done with traveling out of state this season. Next up for the Cardinal will be NCAA regionals May 11, 12 and 13 to be played at Stanford GC.

The NCAA championships will be contested once again at La Costa near San Diego.

3 Stanford golfers - Megha Ganne, Paula Martin Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta - travel to Houston this week to play as amateurs in the LPGA major event. Asterisk Talley is in the field as well.

The NCAA regional field will be announced today at 1 pm on The Golf Channel. Not much drama around Stanford. They will be the #1 seed at the regional to be played at Stanford GC. We will find out this afternoon which other teams will be there.
