RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-17-2026

Stanford men's golf tees off in the NCAA regional tournament Monday starting at 4:30 am pacific time/7:30 am in Columbus, OH. The format is the same as for the women. The top 5 teams after 54 holes of stroke play advance to the national tournament.

You can follow scoring at https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/243258/scoring/team

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-18-2026

On a course that is playing by far the most difficult of the 6 regional sites (only 2 players out of the 75 in the field broke par), Stanford sits in 3rd place after Round 1, tied with Florida State.

1. Florida -7
2. Memphis +5
3. Stanford +6
3. Florida State +6
5. Illinois State +9
6. ASU +10

Stanford was led by Nathan Wang at even par, followed by Jay Leng at +1, Edan Cui at +2 and Ethan Gao at +3. Dean Greyserman didn't make a single birdie and shot +6. Stanford as a team had the fewest birdies in the field with only 8. But they also had the most pars.

Play continues tomorrow.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-19-2026

Stanford finished round 2 in 3rd place. They started well and had a chance to put some distance between themselves and the scrum of teams scrambling for the 5th spot. But they stumbled coming in. They are in good shape to advance but the margin for error is less than it might have been. Except for leader Florida which probably has the regional locked up, tomorrow could be a mad scramble with the weather changing. Temps will drop 20-25 degrees, the wind shifts from the south to the north and there is a chance of thunderstorms.

1. Florida -7
2. Memphis +9
3. Stanford +13
4. ASU +15
5. Long Beach St +20
6. Florida State +21
7. Illinois State +22

Dominant performance by Florida.

Team in the middle of a total collapse. Hope the round ends before our post season does… :-0

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2026

The round was delayed by the weather. All teams went off in a shotgun start to try to accelerate completion of the round. Conditions were cold, rainy and windy. A perfect Scottish golfing day!

Stanford had a 3 hole stretch on the back 9 where they went +9 as a team. The cushion between them and 6th place got uncomfortably small.

But they steadied the ship enough to finish in 2nd place in the region. Survive and advance. On to La Costa!

It's nice when a total collapse results in a climb in the standings.

No argument here…

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - BostonCard - 05-20-2026

Florida ran away with it.

On the day we shot +11, but Memphis, who started the day 4 strokes ahead of us, shot +16 to fall one stroke behind.  ASU who started 4 strokes behind us, shot +15, and FSU, was too far behind (8 strokes) for their +10 to threaten us.

Also, if we shot +11 for the day, that means that aside from the three hole stretch where we went +9, we shot +2.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2026

The NCAA men's golf championship begins today at La Costa, the same course where the women won the NC on Wednesday. Stanford is in the last group of teams to tee off this afternoon starting at 1:40 pm pacific. But that means that Stanford will be playing in the window of online streaming coverage by the Golf Channel.

Streaming (starting at 12:30 pacific) - https://www.golfchannel.com/watch/live/2026-ncaa-division-i-mens-golf-championships-rd-1

For those who are following the Director's Cup, Texas, UCLA and North Carolina are all in the field with Stanford.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Papa John - 05-29-2026

As Stanford prepares to tee off in the final group of the day, the 16 teams with early morning tee times are wrapping/have wrapped up their first rounds.

As of 1:40 pm on Friday, here are the early-tee-times results:

-8 UCLA (F)
-6 San Diego (14-17)
-2 Duke (17-18)
+2 Chattanooga (14-17)
+4 Georgia (F)
+4 Tennessee (F)
+5 Memphis (14-17)
+6 Louisville (17-18)
+7 Arkansas State (F)
+8 Purdue (F)
+8 BYU (F)
+9 U. of Satan's Children (F)
+10 Mississippi State (F)
+11 Texas A&M (F)
+19 Florida State (F)

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2026

The course is tough. Only 3 of 15 teams this morning broke par. Scoring conditions are usually tougher in the afternoon compared to the morning. The wind is up, the greens get firmer.

It's going to take a lot of patience today. I expect that Stanford will be playing 5 hours rounds (or maybe even longer) which will have them finishing right around sunset. As a point of contrast, I walked with Paula Martin Sampedro and Catherine Park in their head-to-head match on Wednesday. The match ended on the 16th hole in about 3 hours.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Papa John - 05-29-2026

And it looks like the last couple of holes are playing especially hard, although I'm not sure who is starting front nine and who is starting back.

UCLA was -10 through 17-18 and finished -8. San Diego was -6 through 14-17 and finished -2. Chattanooga was +2 through 14-17 and finished +6.

Final early-tee-time results:
-8 UCLA
-2 San Diego
-2 Duke
+6 Chattanooga
+4 Georgia
+4 Tennessee
+13 Memphis (was +5 through  14-17)
+6 Louisville
+7 Arkansas State
+8 Purdue
+8 BYU
+9 U. of Satan's Children
+10 Mississippi State
+11 Texas A&M
+19 Florida State

Will anyone amongst the late-tee-time group finish under par? Texas and Auburn are both currently -3 through 10-13 but we'll see if that holds (I hope not!).

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2026

Stanford posted a +3 as a team which places them in a 3 way tie for 12th. They had 3 scores around par (Leng -2, Greyserman even par, Cui +1). But they had to count Wang's +4 because Gao had a 10 on the 17th hole on his way to +10 for the round. At least the Cardinal didn't shoot +15 like top 10 teams LSU and Mississippi.

The Cardinal will play tomorrow morning starting at 8:09 am which should be better scoring conditions. It will be important for Stanford to finish top 15 tomorrow to ensure a morning tee time for Sunday.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - M T - 05-30-2026

It's still early (10:20) for Stanford in Rd2 but they are -10 today (-7 overall for T-5) through 5-7.  I'm crossing my fingers that the good scoring continues, and that the weather favors the teams (Stanford) with early tee times.

76lsjumb - 76lsjumb - 05-30-2026

Apparently our guys couldn’t get it through the windmill door on 14. We dropped 8 strokes on that hole… :-0

bbm233 - bbm233 - 05-30-2026

Unbelievable collapse on the back 9. In the final six holes the guys dropped net 13 strokes and that included 5 birdies. Went from well positioned for match play to on the bubble for the first stroke play cut. Currently sitting in 14th early in the afternoon wave. I hope the wind is blowing.

LOL, unfortunately.

RE: 2026 Men's Golf - M T - 05-30-2026

This video didn't include the 14th as a key hole.  Another page has  "Finally, the 14th hole is a 517-yard par-4 that many say is the best on the course. It includes a restored creek that makes players think carefully about how to play around it."  A more detailed description of the 14th ("the toughest hole") can be found in last year's Forbes article.  Sounds demonic.

I sometimes drive by the northernmost holes (on Poinsettia). I grew up used to courses on the Texas Gulf Coast (not that I played much). I wonder about playing on threadbare fairways and dirt, with almost no trees. (But the Omni's pools are nice.)

Nervous time. Only 3 slots for Stanford (+1) and 3 other teams still on the course. Tennessee (E), Chattanooga (+1), Georgia (+4).
