Here's the rookie of the year rankings on the NBA website with Raynaud sitting at #6. He's been floating near or in the top 5 since his mid-season breakout. Looking at the remainder of the top 10, "one of these things is NOT like the others" and it's Raynaud.
Every other rookie in this top 10 ranking was picked in the top 15 slots in last year's NBA draft. Of course Raynaud was the 42nd pick. Looks like the Kings got the steal of the 2025 draft and Raynaud left a bunch of money on the table. He also landed on a team willing to play a low draft Rookie and patient enough to let him find his confidence and evolve an NBA game.
His success is no surprise to those of us who watched him play at Maples! But I'm someone sure Casey Jacobsen's range and confidence meant he'd find a solid seat on an NBA bench so my scouting skills are suspect ...

If Domantas Sabonis hadn't been injured, I'm not sure if Maxime would have gotten his shot. Preparation met opportunity this season.

Raynaud final season stats, per game: 26+ minutes, 12.5 pts, 7.5 rebs.
But after the all star break, it was 17+ pts, 9+ reb, 2 ast., over 80% on FTs, over 60% on FGs and over 40% on threes (small sample size). If only GSW/Lacob had drafted him. Or, OKC, two picks after Sacramento.

Was Raynaud hindered by Sabonis starting ahead of him earlier this season, or did Raynaud need that gradual introduction to the starting role? It feels like he would have been way better if he had been a starter from the get go.

Maxime was purely a backup until Sabonis got hurt. Now the Kings have a problem going into next year--I don't see how you let a (potential) 17-9 guy come off the bench.

Well, Cooper Flagg also started the season much slower than he ended it, and he was a number 1 draft pick and starter from the get go. Sometimes it takes players a little time to adjust to the NBA.

S Jones 10 minutes, no pts, 2 reb and the undermanned Nuggets lost game 2 at home to Minn.
Denver is pretty much a 2-man team, reminds me a little of Malone/Stockton back when, and needs Jones or someone else to get hot or their postseason may be short.

Spencer hurt his hamstring a few weeks back and missed several games. Since returning he hasn't played many minutes per game and isn't producing much during that limited time--I wonder if he's not 100% yet.

Meanwhile, the Wemby-less Spurs won in Portland, giving Mitch Johnson his second playoff win ever.
I think Mitch is the only LSJU alum currently head coaching any North American professional sports team, M or W.

I enjoyed this description of Jones' shot from an article in the Ringer about the Nuggets. Anyone who saw him play at Stanford can picture this clearly, I'm sure:

I believe what was mentioned was a career high postseason performance, at least by the talking heads. :)

Not only was he the only 2nd rounder to make the team, but I'm pretty sure he was the only non-lottery player to make the team. Impressive!

It'll be interesting to see if Sacramento can move Sabonis' large contract for assets before it finishes in '28. Aside from Raynaud, there are Precious Achiuwa and Dylan Cardwell to play at center (and Drew Eubanks, but not often).

Mitch Johnson among the goats (the bad kind) after Spurs blow a 29 point lead and lose game 4 against the Knicks. They were up 15 to start the fourth quarter. Spurs now losing the series 3-1, which is very, very bad. But the way they lost this game means there will be a hangover well into next season at the very least, assuming they don't pull off an NBA miracle and come back to win the whole thing this year.
Our MJ failed to call a time out to try to break-up Knicks growing momentum in the fourth quarter. He also let the whatever-French-might-be-for-wunderkind play the entire fourth quarter, perhaps leading the giant Wemby to miss two free throws with about a minute remaining. One of the few experienced Spurs players, De'Aaron Fox, panicked with the ball and Spurs up one with about 15 seconds left, taking an extremely ill-advised shot near the rim when he should have just held the ball and waited for a foul.
Finally, the Spurs final chance with 1.2 seconds left was doomed with a poor inbounds pass from...a 20-year-old rookie. (Yes, I am a Spurs fan.)
