2005 UC Davis was much closer in ranking to last year's Sac State than to 2022 Colgate/Cal Poly.
Again, this shouldn't even be a discussion.

IMO we should be several steps above Cal Poly. If we are not, we are indeed in for a long season. Unfortunately the converse is not true. We may be several steps above Cal Poly and still be in for a long season. The danger of interpreting positive results from the Cal Poly game is that things that work against them may absolutely not work against any of our other opponents. As an example, our OL may be dominant against Cal Poly. That doesn't mean they have suddenly become a "good group". It means they are better than Cal Poly, nothing more.
Friendly reminder that Shaw's horrible 2022 team dominated Colgate 41-10. Cal Poly is similarly ranked. (Last year's Sac State was ranked over 100 spots better.) This shouldn't even be a discussion.
how do they compare to the 2005 UC Davis team.....
Ouch!
In recollection, a headline from back then: UC Davis Stuns Stanford For Improbable 20-17 Win
Hopefully TT isn't another Wlat.
However we did go on to win five games that year. I don't think that would be considered a horrible outcome for 2024.

They also had a NFL quality tight end that could make plays.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Fells. If Stanford didn't bring their "A" game (which it didn't), he could beat you almost by himself.

Well, I agree it is impossible to draw meaningful conclusions about Stanford's relative strength if they defeat Cal Poly "handsomely". If they don't, IMO some (seriously depressing) conclusions can be drawn.

I was at that UC Davis game. It was the worst experience in my Stanford Football fandom .... That's saying something as I had Season Tickets again the next year in 2006 (1-11 overall, 0-42 vs USC) through the home stadium turnkey's of the last three miserable seasons (7-52 Utah, 6-42 Oregon, etc).
UC Davis in 2006 was worse. There was no possible recovery for Harris after watching that atrocity.
The contrast under Harbaugh was spectacular following the Harris low where many fans had stopped believing that Stanford COULD play high-end football. It's also why Harbaugh ranks higher in fan's affections than Shaw even if Shaw took us to the first Rose Bowl wins of many fan's lifetimes.

I don't like to talk about that UC Davis game, but I think it should be mentioned that Stanford's QB, Trent Edwards, got knocked out of the game very early. Stanford's offense never got going after that. Despite Stanford's very poor performance, Stanford would have won that game if an official hadn't blown a call on UC Davis's game-winning drive, calling Nick Sanchez out-of-bounds on an interception when he clearly was in bounds.

Maybe expressing my ongoing anxiety about upcoming Cal Poly is becoming tedious.
More acceptable as a Haiku?
Worry and concern
Intellect brutality
veers futility

Totally Agree. I just wanna see glimpses of what a TT offense can actually do. I feel like we’ve been waiting a year and a half for a creative dynamic offense and this is an opportunity to see that.
A win definitely doesn’t mean much for this season but once we get the right personnel out there, what could this prolific offense look like.
