We've almost finished our round. Currently at +19 for the day, 9 strokes worse then every other team in the morning. We seem to collapse every postseason aside from 2019 when we surprised everyone. Is there some point where we explore a coaching change? Seems like the recruiting has been there but the results have not been.

I think you are being generous in saying our recruiting has been OK. We have had some excellent players, but the depth has not been there on any consistent basis. When you play 5 and count 4, there is a lot of pressure. When you have only 3 really good players, you are between a rock and hard place. I don't know if it is coaching, or poor recruiting. Why not take a look at the portal in this brave new world of college sports. This year we were pretty much playing 3 against 5 and that will not work out in the long run.

While Thorbjornsen, Vilips and Brown have all had their highlights in their 4 and 5 year Stanford careers, none of them quite rose to the level you might have expected given their junior and amateur accomplishments. The team was close last year. But they lost a tiebreaker for the 8th and final match play spot.
The big disappointment to me is that the last 3 recruiting classes (since Vilips and Thorbjornsen) has not yielded a single reliable contributor. Aside from Thorbjornsen and Vilips, no other player placed in the top 10 of a tournament this year. Stanford brings in the #1 recruiting class in the country next year. But the roster they will join does not have much to build on. And Stanford is joining the ACC, the top men's golf conference.

Perhaps joining the ACC will help boost the recruiting...

Thor got his PGA card as the winner of PGAU. I think that’s an award as the best senior in the country. Not sure how it is judged, especially considering he missed the entire fall season.
Good luck to him for the rest of the year. We could use a new Tiger.

Vlips is on his last hole and has to birdie to tie for the lead. It's a par 4, which he has done well on in earlier rounds.

We need more than one Tiger. We have two top players coming in, but who is going to make up the rest of the roster? Clearly we either are recruiting the wrong guys or not developing them.

I think you have to understand the scholarship situation. It’s a partial sport but to get our present top two takes more than 50% leaving less for recruits.

Is this any different than other schools?

I feel like there were multiple years where we were the top seed or one of the top seeds and we failed to even make the top 15.

Fire a coach that won a national championship five years ago, had two abbreviated COVID years (so basically only three full years since the national championship), and just won the Pac-12 tournament last year? In the three full years since the national championship, Stanford men's golf has made the NCAA Championship finals every year.
I think the recent success of the women's golf team, for better or for worse, sets a very high bar for the men's golf team. Coach Ray has a very good resume (2 national championships, 5 conference titles). Anne Walker is approaching coaching legend status.

You're right, the men's team's results look a lot worse due to comparison with the women. In looking at the results over the past ten years (summary link below), the team isn't as bad over the past 5 years as I had thought. This year's team finished very similarly to the stretch from 2015-2018 where we had some really good teams (ranked in the top 5 going into NCAAs) that just fell apart in NCAAs, and that probably brought back some bad memories. That said, I recognize that several top 10 teams missed the NCAA championships, on both the men's and women's side, and I should accept more variation aside from the juggernaut that is the women's team.

Stanford has arguably been the best P12 golf team in the NCAA match play era (since 2009). They have been regular qualifiers for the NCAA championship tournament and won in 2019. Only Oregon among other P12 schools has won a championship in the match play era. Joseph Bramlett, Patrick Rodgers, Maverick McNealy, Isaiah Salinda and Brandon Wu have passed through the program and then played professionally. Thorbjornsen, Vilips and Brown will likely follow.
Stanford has been a solid top 25 or top 30 team. But not a consistent top 10 team. Aside from 2019, they have only qualified for match play twice - 2010 and 2014.
I would love to see Stanford at the level of Georgia Tech, Illinois or Vanderbilt, schools that have been consistent top 10 teams and match play participants. But oh, one thing. None of those schools has ever won an NCAA golf championship. I'm all in for Conrad Ray.
