Missy to the monitor at Princeton-NC State game!

Wow, Princeton comes back from down 8 to win by 1, on a 3 pointer with 4.7 seconds left. NC State didn't get a shot off on the subsequent possession.

I was rooting for them, but had given up. Moral, don't give up! Maybe they were inspired by their men's team's victory over Arizona

As an alum of Princeton too I am elated. My other alma mater Stanford has been the program that has shown how to be successful athletically while maintaining high academic standards. Princeton is showing a very different pathway while it seeks to do the same--clearly "lower" athletic standards, but high enough to be fun for its people.

First day results:
Pac 12
3-1
Highest seed defeated: 10
Upsets lost: 8 seed USC lost to 9 seed South Dakota State in OT (SD State had a similar NET ranking to USC, 34 vs USC's 31 so not a big upset)
Upsets won: 0 (no lower-seed matchups)
Notes: 1) Stanford wins by 43 without Brink, 2) Utah scores over 100 and Pili has a career high 33 points AND a career high 8 assists, and 3) Arizona easily defeats the Big 12's #5 team and Kate Reese goes off for 25 points. Would've been nice if USC had won, but the teams did about as I expected on the first day. Not much respect for the Pac 12 at ESPN though. Their pundants didn't even mention Stanford at all in their day 1 wrap up article and then went on to predict both 5-seeds Washington State and 6-seed Colorado will lose today:
ESPN Wrap - Day 1 We'll see.
SEC
5-0
Highest seed defeated: 6
Upsets lost: 0
Upsets won: 3 (one 11 seed, two 10 seeds)
Notes: They had the best day of any conference by far. I don't think that means they will get two teams to the Final Four, but it's eye opening. I hope Brink is back for the game vs Ole Miss.
BIG 10
3-2
Highest seed defeated: 11
Upsets lost: 0 (though 2 teams lost the 11-seed play-in game)
Upsets won: 0
Notes: Easy wins for Iowa and MD as expected. Michigan had a surprisingly easy time with UNLV. TBD how good the BIG 10 is (though McKenzie Holmes is apparently injured and day-to-day for Indiana)
Big East
1-2 (with the 1 win being an 11-seed play in game)
Highest seed defeated: 11 (play-in)
Upsets lost: 1 (6 lost to 11)
Upsets won: 0
Notes: The Big East's #3 and #5 teams both lose. After big success last tournament, the Big East seems to be regressing to the mean. That probably doesn't tell us much either way about UConn, but it makes Villanova's lofty #10 ranking in the AP Poll questionable. We'll see how Villanova looks today. (A less-vaunted Villanova would be good news for Washington St., provided they get past FGCU today.)
Big 12
0-1
Highest seed defeated: N/A
Upsets lost: 0
Upsets won: 0
Notes: The Big 12's 4th best team (West Virginia) lost handily to Arizona (the Pac 12's 5th place team). Hard to read too much into this either way.
ACC
2-2
Highest seed defeated: 14
Upsets lost: 2 (two 7 vs 10 losses)
Upsets won: 0
Notes: I didn't have a clear take on the ACC. They had been beating up on each other and I couldn't tell if it were because they had a lot of great teams or not. Not a good start for them. NC St and Florida St. were both upset, VA Tech's win was lackluster, Notre Dame won easily vs a 14 seed but is without Olivia Miles for the tournament.

I think you meant USC lost to South Dakota State. Ole Miss just beat Gonzaga and is about to play us.

Oops thanks. I'll fix that. I watched both games last night and switched them up.

Cougs in trouble against Florida Gulf Coast.
Down 14 in the fourth quarter.
Reversion to the mean I guess after the Pac 12 tourney.

12 seed Toledo is leading 7 seed Iowa State by 7 going into halftime. They were up 11 moments before but gave up a 4-point possession.
(Made shot, with a foul against another player with the ball in the air, with ISU in the bonus, resulting in 2 free throws. I think the NBA gives one free throw in cases like this, regardless of bonus. I think that's a better rule.)

Game concluded, WSU lost 64-74. So sorry to see them go down like this. BTW, Stanford beat FGCU 93-69 in Hawaii in November

I believe there’s a specific term for what WSU just did…

LOL. Ouch. Nice one. Sad to see such a likeable team meet an early fate...

Well, at least they are keeping their record intact about never having won an NCAA tournament game.

USC lost to a smaller conference team. WSU, our conference tournament winner, lost to a much lower seeded team from a smaller conference team. Not a good look for the conference. I am on record speculating that the conference is deep with a lot of good teams but is weak in the top half. If CO loses or struggles, well, that would confirm that suspicion. I hope my suspicion is wrong.

Colorado crushed Middle Tennessee, although the final margin shrank to 82-60 after they went on cruise control.

Well, Colorado just destroyed Middle Tennessee, a team from a small conference which has some good wins (Louisville) and a high NET rating (28). It's hard to extrapolate the strength of a conference from the first round. Seeing which teams win two games and get to the Sweet Sixteen will be a better gauge.

UCLA is taking care of business over poor Sacramento State. Kiki Rice is picking up where she left off against us. The first time we saw her, she did not seem to be living up to her hype. She now looks awesome. It is going to be hard playing against her for years to come. Well, at least one year to come. Then she can enjoy jetting east to play in Iowa City and Champaign.
I also watched a bit of Texas demolishing its hapless foe. Strange to see Shaylee Gonzalez and Taylor Jones playing for them. And Rori Harmon seems entirely back from her earlier injury. I think I'm cheering for Louisville to beat Texas.

Yep, UCLA is up by 20 at the end of Q3. After scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Rice has only two in the 2nd and 3rd. Guess she has turned the scoring over to her teammates.

Not perfect, but Pac12 was 5 for 7 in 1st round, and most of the wins were dominating (Stanford, Utah, Colorado, UCLA -- and even Arizona was by 13). The two losses -- by USC and WSU -- were disappointing, especially WSU for me, but I'd say the conference is doing well. The real test is how things go tomorrow and Monday, how many get into the sweet sixteen. I hope it's all 5 that are playing in the 2nd round!

I get the sentiment, and I know it is better for Stanford if our league does well. But I have reservations about cheering on Colorado, UCLA, or Arizona. UCLA is a traitor school, and I feel committed to hoping that they and USC lose all their games in all their sports for eternity. Colorado....well Colorado is coached by JR Payne, and I detest her style of play. (On the other hand, they could do us a favor and knock Duke and Iowa out of the tournament, assuming we get by Ole Miss and Texas--a big assumption.) I liked Arizona when they played us for a national championship, and respected Adia Barnes. But then she seemingly weeded out her players (7 players transferred out) and I found that disturbing. So I am not very enthused about any of the remaining Pac XX schools other than ourselves, and possibly Utah. I would have gladly cheered for WSU.
