BTW, it's more and more apparent that Smith did irrevocable harm to himself. Humpty Dumpty.
"Irrevocable" is an extreme word and I suspect misplaced. Americans are by and large a very forgiving people.
studio execs may be more cautious about being forgiving, of course with the recent expansion of the number of funders and distribution channels for movies (streaming being the largest) that's likely less of an issue than it would have been 10 years ago

I thought these were interesting. Perhaps the most nonpartisan issue in America is the slap.

Shocker.
Isn't Vermont the land of Ben & Jerry, Phish, Bernie Sanders? there must be some violent hippies there that I didn't know about.

Lex, in Hollywood when a "cool" director like Terence Malick makes a picture that nobody can figure out the mass of "cool" people in the industry touts it because anybody "cool" can't admit how crappy the picture really is and thus would be drummed out of the "cool" group.
I agree that it was a mess but then again I'm not cool. I still can't figure out what the hell "Last Year at Marienbad" was about but I bet I'm not alone.
I did like "The Thin Red Line." Combat is real and he absolutely got it. I give him a pass on the dreamlike flashbacks. But the picture is an anomaly in his career IMO.

I agree with what you're saying, however I thought Days of Heaven was a really good movie. He became less accessible later in his career.

Yow, forgot that picture. Malick gave his cameraman Nestor Almendros free reign and it paid off. Visually stunning. Nestor believed in natural light and keyed his scenes accordingly. The night fire sequence employed no instruments and was lit entirely by the blaze.
PS Academy Award best Cinematography 1978.

Kareem had insightful take (which I think is here):

i am blown away by Kareem's words.
I saw that earlier. Dead on accuracy from an elder statesman.

The Academy met to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith.

The only people expelled from the Academy are pretty bad folks: Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Carmine Caridi (kicked out for sharing awards screeners).

NPR had a pretty good article on this. Jovian Lee asked Silver directly if Sterling deserved to lose his team for something he said in private and Silver replied that it was now in public. Dennis Prager and Joyce Carol Oates made similar comments at the time. Incidentally, Sterling's comments were recorded by V. Stiviano in a home that he bought for her.
What About Donald Sterling's Right To Privacy? : NPR
Stiviano lost in court to Sterling's wife, she had to pay back $2.6 million in gifts. Shelly Sterling argued that the gifts were joint property and therefore not Sterling's to give. Wonder if Stiviano would have taped Donald Sterling knowing that it would cost her $2.6 million?

for what it's worth, Jada may actually have traction alopecia, which is caused by braiding and is distinct from alopecia areata.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traction_alopecia
according to an NIH article archived in 2017, most people get alopecia areata in their teens, twenties, and thirties. in Jada's case, the onset came when she was in her late 40's.

I've heard there's a remake of Slap Shot in the works. . . .

Remakes suck. Why remake All the King's Men? West Side Story? Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Deep Throat 2? Magnificent Seven (I know Kurosawa made the original)?
You just can't remake classics. Slap Shot? Hoosiers? Citizen Kane? Give me a break.

That is a terrific explanation. I watched about 45 minutes, turned to my friend and said “I’m obviously not smart enough for this.” We turned it off.
