RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - OutsiderFan - 06-14-2021

Virginia gets passed DBU for the 7th spot in CWS. Now it's Notre Dame vs. Mississippi State for the final spot tonight.

ND seems to have a very potent offense and clearly is not bothered by that MSU home stadium atmosphere.

Would have been nice to have Oregon and/or Oregon State make it, but oh well.

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - Sam Leopold - 06-21-2021

Jack Leiter's line:  8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 15 K, 1 BB, 123 pitches, L.

Sam Highfill, Evan Justice and the NCSU defense simply refused to be scored upon, and Terrell Tatum, the Wolfpack's DH and cleanup hitter, took the only meatball Leiter threw and turned it into dinner.

Now Stanford gets to play Vanderbilt on Wednesday, arguably the best college baseball program in the country at this point in time, with two aces in the rotation and the only team to win the CWS more than once in the last 10 years. Now we will either get Rocker on three days' rest, or the other Vandy starters, which spells a legitimate chance either way. Arizona faced Rocker fully rested and put up some runs on him. Of course, we've got to send out either our own other starters, or Beck on three days' rest ourselves.

Per Esquer, we are going with a “kitchen sink” pitching staff on Weds.

Interesting to look at the top 8 seeds coming into the postseason and see how things are going:

1. Arkansas (lost in Super Regional to N.C. State)
2. Texas (alive, 1 loss to Mississippi State)
3. Tennessee (out, lost to UVA, Texas)
4. Vanderbilt (alive, 1 loss to N.C. State)
5. Arizona (lost to Stanford, Vanderbilt)
6. TCU (lost its own regional to Dallas Baptist)
7. Mississippi State (alive, 0 losses)
8. Texas Tech (lost in Super Regional to Stanford)

I do love this format, though. Just great theater.

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - oman - 06-22-2021

Nice win by Texas.  My dream final is still alive.

Plus the fake UT goes home.

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - OutsiderFan - 06-22-2021

Virginia Pitcher Griff McGary, who has a 5.06 ERA, has given up 0 hits to Mississippi State through 7 IP.

Virginia leads MSU 4-0.

We could be close to an all ACC CWS Final with NC State and Virginia, two teams that didn't even host Regionals.

Whoa, this is more remarkable than I thought.

McGary on season: 11 starts 0-5 5.06 ERA. 42.2 IP 41 BB 69 K

Interestingly enough, he's from Portola Valley and went to Menlo High School.

Well, the first hit is a 2-run HR with one out in 8th...

Man did I jinx Virginia... MSU hits a 2-run HR and a 3-run HR in top of the 8th to take 5-4 lead.

This thread should be the top of the page!  And baseball is by far my least favorite sport.

C'mon little Tree!

Game is in 2 hours.

Covid isn't over. Can you imagine if Vandy advances by default and Stanford would have been in the final had they not spit the bit Wednesday?

NC State was forced to play with 9 position players and 4 Pitchers. And of those 9 position players, 4 were not starters. If you know anything about NC State this year, you know they had the same lineup for the entire post-season, and how key that was to their ability to win.

Quote:Starting second baseman J.T. Jarrett and bullpen ace Evan Justice are out for the semifinal game against the Commodores due to COVID-19-related issues. A source described Jarrett as "no longer with the team," while Justice was still in Omaha, Nebraska, but was placed in quarantine.
...
Avent told reporters Monday that an illness was running through the team but made no mention of it possibly being COVID-19. He said associate head coach Chris Hart had been sick for five or six days and that Jarrett and pitcher Cameron Cotter weren't feeling well.

One strike.  :•(

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - BostonCard - 06-25-2021

Vandy won 3-1.  So, they will play one last one tomorrow for the chance to go to the CWS finals.

It's mind-boggling to think that any of these players are NOT vaccinated.  They all should be by now.  Hell, my 14 year old, who is deathly afraid of shots, got his Pfizer dual-blast many, many weeks ago.  SMH.

P.S.  Am aware of a local HS who had one positive test on the roster allowing team to play on basis of (a) very little chance of outdoor transmission, (b) the positive testee was asymptomatic, and © possibility of false positive.  Based on the above, I assume the NC State guys are actually sick.  Again . . . mind-boggling.

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament - fullmetal - 06-25-2021

Agreed.  I hope the US Olympic team is well-vaccinated across all sports.  When the stakes are that high, I don't think any of them should be taking chances.

This is the second time that NCST has had Covid this year. This team was not vaxxed. The questions is, how many of the 8 were vaxxed.

NC State doesn't even get a chance to play again. This is an embarrassment. Vanderbilt moves on by forfeit.

The embarrassment is a net good for society and for college and pro sports IMHO.

I suspect many pro and college teams will talk about this situation.   For a sports team the decision by individuals to become anti-vaxxers could destroy a post season run.  Agents right now are likely calling their late round draft picks or UDFAs to get vaccinated ASAP.

The rates of vaccination in the South remain quite low, so an event like this might get a few more people to finally decide to protect their communities, businesses, teams, oh and...their life.

Agree

Also, what if we could have just held the lead in the 9th against Vanderbilt ...

I wonder if NC State had won yesterday would they have been allowed to play in the finals?  Would Vanderbilt have advanced instead?  Would the winner of the other bracket have been declared the champion?
