Why was that ? One reason he committed to Stanford for baseball as a HS soph

Holds all the Oregon passing records.  Challenge is that he's 6' 0" (barely) and 182 pounds.

He's 196 pounds and was Oregon's Player of the Year over Sam Noyer (Colorado) when Noyer was a senior and Tawa a sophomore. He was Oregon's Player of the Year as a junior over Justin Herbert (Oregon; Chargers) when Herbert was a senior and Tawa a junior. He throws 90+, is cat quick and runs in the 4.5s. The only thing not to like is he doesn't fit Shaw's mold size wise.

Tawa won't do it anyway, but it's fun to speculate.

The other thing possibly not to like is that he had zero football offers in high school. Why was that? Can't be size; there were three 4* dual-threat QBs who were 6' or shorter in his class (and three more 3* dual-threat QBs 6' or shorter that signed with P5 programs).

On "doesn't fit the mold size-wise," 2 of our 2022 QB offers are 6'1" and 6'2".

That's actually easily explained. When Tawa committed to the baseball program, early in November, 2014, he was a 15-year-old sophomore still in his first year playing varsity football and not yet considered a prospect. Three weeks later, he won the first of three straight Gatorade POY awards in football.

Tawa's first love was baseball, the scholarship was significant (greater than 75%) and Stanford was his dream school. He was COMMITTED. Not committed until there was a better offer. Committed. The family instructed his football head coach, former NFL QB and Falcons QB coach Chris Miller, to tell anyone inquiring that Tawa was not considering college football offers. As a result, at no time did he ever talk to any college football coach on the subject of recruiting. It is true that he received no Division I offer. He also received no Division II offer. None at the DIII, NAIA or JuCo levels, either. Committed meant committed. He stated publicly that if he played football, it would only be for the Card and that he would be a baseball first player.

Thanks for the Tawa background BaseballJunkie.  Those are some pretty impressive POY wins up in Oregon, and one would think Shaw would have at least had a conversation with the potential fb recruit.   If not, it's further evidence of complacency imho.

I think I saw a stat that we have the second most number of NFL drafted QBs in NCAA football history.  It should continue to be a position of strength for Stanford and we want to be "Quarterback U!"  Great QB recruits can also help bring in great WRs and TEs - it creates a virtuous cycle.  Here's hoping McKee, West and Patu are all pushing each other to be better, much better this year.    If this year's a bust in this area, then it's way past time for Tavita to learn and grow in another program and for Shaw to bring in a very strong OC that pushes him.

Tanner McKee will be fine IF the Offensive Line answers the bell.
Directing Playoff Perennial Corona Centennial for three years is the equivalent of a JuCo Transfer, despite the Two year mission.
He's played the schools that serve up players to USC, UCLA from H.S., line Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman or St. John Bosco.
