I think Mills is a great QB with all kinds of gifts that could probably have been developed at Stanford next season. But I don’t blame one bit for going pro, and wish him luck. Football careers are short, and Mills knows all to well what injuries mean.
I wonder if seeing McKee in practice hastened his decision. McKee’s physical talents are remarkable - from his HS tape he seems to have a brobdingnagian arm, and his ability to run seems closer to what we had with Luck and Hogan. His size is also impressive.

I would recommend McKee watch Johnny Unitas handoff film. The master of hand-eye.

I don't know whether this is a good or a bad decision for Mills.
But decisions like this, in which the professional and business interests of the players are increasingly prominent in the game, leave me cold. I enjoyed college sports more when I could become attached to certain players. Without that, the magic of the game is lost.

I too wish h'ed stayed, but that's just to provide entertainment and excitement for ME. He's been on the farm for four years, is 22, and ready to graduate. I am sure Shaw gave him good advice, both pros and cons. He effortlessly throws a beautiful, catchable ball and is mobile enuf if he doesn't get injured. He would have shown all that even more next year, but 90% of draft choices are based on potential. And, he has tremendous potential. Hopefully, he goes to a team that has a good scheme for him and won't get him killed like Plunkett. I think he goes in first 3 rounds. No big rookie K but plenty of coin down the road if he's as good as I think he is.
Re next year, Shaw will have to play McKee. And, he is going to be really good.
Concur. Size, mobility, rocket-launcher arm and speed. Maybe the best raw talent since Luck, Mills not withstanding.

More read option perhaps. Do we know anything about his accuracy? True Dual Threat QB suggest some significant tweaks to the playbook. Let’s see if that happens.

I understand the sentiment. But the short shelf life of a football player leads to this. And it should always be what’s best for the player personally and career wise.

McKee looks very impressive in that high school highlight tape. I like the way he places the ball, these are highlights, but those were all well placed and pretty direct.
A couple things struck be about him physically. He looked like one of the biggest players on the team. Once he got past the line of scrimmage, he was bigger than everybody.
It was strange that he looked slow, while still being faster than most of the defenders. Maybe because he's so big. I imagine it will be an adjustment to college size and speed when it comes to running. But if he can run like Hogan and throw like Mills, the next few years could be fun.

Yep, you just have to structure your program so when somebody decides to bolt you have someone just as good to replace him. The Alabamas of this world can do it. I'd like to think that we can too.

I know he lost some weapons. But my goodness, he's started eleven games. He has in no way permeated the national college football consciousness. He doesn't have the tape to warrant a GM taking a risk on him. Just from a pure financial perspective, I don't understand him feeling like he's better positioned to take the leap now vs. after another year.
When you're hoping to be a late round pick, then how is this the right play? If he comes back, puts down a good year on tape, and he comes out in a less-loaded draft, that's millions more in his pocket and a team that is committed to him as a high pick (leading to more chances, the benefit of the doubt, etc.) rather than a team that isn't invested in him, either financially or in terms of draft capital.
Little and Adebo? Those decisions make sense. They've shown enough. I can even understand Fehoko, especially since he took a mission. He's 23 with great measurables, and some team is gonna pick him up, probably on Day 2. But Sarell? And now Mills?
Maybe it's just as simple as looking around, seeing who's coming back on offense, and betting that he's not going to be protected well and won't have good enough weapons to improve his stock. And if that's the case, then ok, I guess--I'll know that I don't need to keep my Saturdays free next fall. But gosh, it's hard not to look back at his career and not think of it as anything other than a major disappointment compared to expectations. That couldn't be helped this year, of course, but such is life.
He will move up draft boards. The more time NFL looks at him and spends time with him, the more they are going to like him. He is a complete player. I bet he goes in the first three rounds and is one of the top 6 QBs taken.
I’ll take that bet. Bottle of wine?

Highly unlikely to be a top 6 QB in the draft. Most draft boards don't have him ranked at all, and no one has him in the top 12.

I wasn't blown away by Jones today but he does fit the ball in there and has poise. Can he be a game manager for Shanahan? Of course he has five Godzillas protecting him and one of the best college receivers ever. Niners need a corner. If they decide to keep Jimmy they should trade up to get Surtain.
Tight End U Palo Alto has nobody like the Domer's Mayer.

Jones is very accurate on short to medium passes. He is not electric. A true game manager. I wonder whether Fields' draft position will be affected by Haskins' showing. Same type of player and similar strengths. Haskins always posed as a team guy; Fields seems more authentic.

Can I interpret this as a very sweet way of saying if the players the team don't care why should I? Which is pretty much where I'm at with college football as a whole not just my Stanford fandom.
I think the players care, but at least for the better ones, their primary goal seems to be getting to the NFL as soon as they can. With the kind of bucks the NFL hands out it's hard to blame them, but it does take some of the fun out of the fan experience.
so 1 foot in 1 foot out? It has to be rough being the vast majority of the players who are all in and fully committed to college football. But they have to stay silent and defer to the handful of players that are less committed but more talented. Seems demoralizing :shrugs:

The only similarities between Fields and Haskins is they both played at OSU. Fields is a significantly more talented QB. More accurate and a much better runner.

OSU has not really produce any NFL QBs of not in the last 10 to 12 years (Troy Smith, Terrell Pryor, Braxton Miller - injury, Cardale Jones -"why go to class" and Dwayne Haskins)
