RE: MBB vs UNC - Crafter Artisan - 12-01-2020

That was a damn good effort out there.  Two years ago, this same game was an 18-point loss.  Would have been really nice to close the deal, but we're now at the point where we can envision that last puzzle piece going in.  Been paying a lot of dues along the way.

Rebounds 43-23 to the goats, that will obviously need attention.

RE: MBB vs UNC - PVTree - 12-01-2020

Big missed opportunity. In my clearly biased view, I thought Stanford was the better team. Where NC was clearly superior was the Offensive rebounding. They got many points off these.

I did think the turning point was that bogus T on Z. Spencer being off the mark didn't help. DaSilva missing a 1and1'late didn't help, Wills' poor FT shooting didn't help, Z getting into foul trouble didn't help.

After hearing that NC had a tough time at the line yesterday, I'm left wondering if we should have started fouling with about 40 seconds left to extend the game.

I was hoping that our tourney revenge tour, beating Bama, NC, and Texas, would be successful, but we can't get the NC chip off our back

RE: MBB vs UNC - washingtonismoney - 12-01-2020

Big picture, of course, love the defense and fight, and don't want to be too much of a nudnik but: this may be like the sixth straight year with struggles on offense with Haase.

RE: MBB vs UNC - BostonCard - 12-01-2020

He needs to fire the offensive coordinator and stop calling the plays himself.  Sorry, wrong thread.

RE: MBB vs UNC - Spiny_Norman - 12-01-2020

My friend the Court Jester (whom some may know from the other board) observed that Ted Valentine is like Joe West in MLB or Joey Crawford in the NBA. A big ego who demands attention. The T on Williams was a killer. It was also his 3rd personal which led to him sitting for key stretches of the 2nd half when he soon thereafter picked up his 4th foul (which also seemed phantom).

RE: MBB vs UNC - burger - 12-01-2020

Before we write off the offense as terrible and fire Hasse, maybe we should remember that this was our second game in 17 hours.  Jones played 31 minutes last night and 35 today.  Williams was 29 and 30.  Wills could barely walk at the end of last night's game and got abused by NC today (including an egregious no call near the end).

So let's maybe give it a few more games before casting judgment.

Anyone know?  His absence seemed to promote Taitz to be the first wing off the bench. He seemed to hold his own pretty well, too.

RE: MBB vs UNC - Phogge - 12-01-2020

The NC guards got to many open looks on the elbow. I think college hoops was better with two refs.

RE: MBB vs UNC - winflop - 12-01-2020

Nothing to hang their heads about. They played a top 25 team with a Hall of Fame coach and hung with them throughout the game. Couldn't hit several open looks down the stretch. Equally important is that they played well two games in a row, which has been a challenge for this program for more than a decade.

This is a good team - one we've been hoping to see for a few years

I read somewhere that Delaire had back spasms.

For sure. There was absolutely nothing from a coaching standpoint that hurt us offensively. Guys had good open looks, took 'em and missed too many of 'em. From people - particularly Spencer - who normally make 'em. Fatigue almost certainly was a factor.

I guess when you’re that hyped, there’s a big target on your back, even from the zebras.

Actually, the stars usually get the calls.
My point was that he hasn’t proven himself to be a star at this level yet, and there might be some people who want to teach him a lesson or two

Stanford might have trouble against a team with a tall, strong post player.

Well, I'm in the other camp - I like Walton as an announcer.  Only caught last 7 minutes of 1H today and was chuckling the whole time through his stream-of-consciousness commentary (and yes, including the shrooms can save the planet sidelight).  But he'll give some good game commentary, too . . . like when some guy from UNC chucked up an airball from three.  Bill interrupted his own rambling with:  "Oh . . . so close!"  I'm chuckling just recalling that one.

I suppose like most things, moderation is best.  But still, he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is generally a good thing in my book.  And a free spirit ain't bad, either.

P.S. A legit concern with Haase teams is the ability to score late in games. I agree that nothing is conclusive after this back-to-back game against a good team; still, it's a bit concerning.

RE: MBB vs UNC - Farm93 - 12-01-2020

I am all in on the close loss is a great sign for this season.
I am all in on the idea that a close loss to UNC in North Carolina should help with national respect, media coverage, and more this season.

HOWEVER, Stanford is being fueled by a likely one and done talent, so I am not quite all in on the idea that the program is now on a good trajectory.   There is an opportunity to parlay this season into a favorable multi-year trend, but I am not sure that is the program's fate just yet.

The team has been here with impressive losses to great programs early in the season before, the catch for Coach Haase has been to convert early season optimism into wins at the end of the season.     Hopefully it will happen with Ziaire on the court this season, but even if it happens Coach Haase would need to show he can do that without Ziaire in the 2021-2022 season.

I would rather have Ziaire and a hopeful 2020-2021 season than seem destined to stumble around in the middle third of the Pac-12.   But Stanford basketball under Haase has been here before and it didn't end well in those other seasons.

We haven' had very deep teams, and as a consequence Haase has run many of his starters for 35+ minutes.  Is it a surprise, then, that they run out of gas at the end of the game?  The bad news is that the only way to correct it is to become a deeper team.  The good news, then, is that this seems to be what Haase is doing.  Hopefully, we will see less of this in upcoming years.

On being fueled by a one-and-done, I agree it can be potentially problematic, but in the last couple years Haase has recruited pretty well in the next tier down, guys who may stay for two or three years or even contribute for four.

I am not a Walton fan. Not at all.  But he gets the quip of the night after a tricky tacky call on Stanford “Cmon Ref, this is BASKETBALL, not Santa Clara County”. He’s up a. Itch after that observation.

Look at Washington. Several one and dones over the last few years. Got waxed by UC Riverside today. Only managed 42 points.

His play by play partner was having a rough time figuring out when to speak, not being in the same room as Walton.  It was most evident coming out of a break (halftime?) when they were both pictured on the screen.  There was Walton waxing on and on about something, and every time, his cadence slowed, Benetti would start moving his mouth, only to swallow whatever he was about to say because Walton revved up again.

Interesting how things have changed.  It seems more people are on board the MBB resurgence train (I'm on it).

That said, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the similarities to last year.  We had an impressive start to the season, and then barely lost to a top 25 team (1 pt loss to Butler), before going about .500 the rest of the way.

OK, with that jinx out of the way, with Williams, the other freshman contributions (Taitz and Murrell have played some quality minutes) and another year of growth, this does feel like a higher ceiling.  Exciting times...if they can keep playing.

Well I can't wait for you to see the recruiting class we have coming in next season.

I thought Stanford's offense was actually pretty good last year. Certainly it showed marked improvement from earlier in the Haase era. In 2019-2020, Stanford ranked 30th in the nation in FG percentage, and 22nd in 3-point percentage. In the Pac-12, Stanford was second in both categories. Other offensive stats, including points per game and offensive efficiency, were admittedly much more mediocre.

I'd add O'Connell. I thought he looked promising in the few minutes he played vs. Bama.
