Good. I wish Manfred had the guts to take on the players' union and suspend every player involved for a minimum of one year. Maybe that's still coming?

Nah, he said very clearly that for cheating like this, he would hold the general manager/field manager/staff accountable, and he wouldn't seek any player discipline. He could change his mind, of course, but I presume a lot of players were interviewed under the expectation that they couldn't be touched, so reversing course at this point could create some evidentiary problems for disciplining the players.

Jessica Mendoza with the most asinine take I’ve heard yet from a national TV analyst. Not a great week for alums of Stanford batted ball sports.

And as an employee of an organization (the Mets) who were mixed up in all this (as the current home of the only then-player, Carlos Beltran, implicated in the sign-stealing scandal), it's doubly inappropriate of her to be saying this.

Just really, really disappointing from Jessica. I thought she has been a terrific analyst, and I think she has admirably shaken off the haters who said she couldn't be a baseball analyst because she's a woman. I've defended her repeatedly because she's good at the ESPN gig. But holy mackerel. Every once in a while someone says something so deeply and profoundly wrong that you just can't ever look at them in the same light again.

(Also, I remain appalled that anyone at ESPN thinks it's appropriate for her to remain as an analyst despite also being employed by the Mets. You can't both work for a team and purport to be an independent analyst.)

RE: Hinch suspended for 1 year - BostonCard - 01-16-2020

Carlos Beltrán was fired from the Mets; the third manager fired as a consequence of the cheating scandal.

True. Probably the worst since Tiger's escapades...

It sure seemed like Beltran's name was in the report precisely for this reason, as a signal to the Mets to do the right thing. "I've said I'm not gonna discipline players, and I won't, but golly, CARLOS BELTRAN sure did stand out as a bad guy, it'd be a shame if anything happened to his managerial job."

RE: Hinch suspended for 1 year - BostonCard - 01-16-2020

Is the entire Hinch coaching tree poisoned now?

Would note that it is worth comparing the MLB sanctions for sign-gate to the NFL’s sanctions on Belicheck for spygate (fine but no suspension), or  Sean Payton for bountygate (1 year suspension, even though IMO, incentivizing injuring other players is an order of magnitude worse than stealing signs, and of course Payton is still coaching the Saints)

RE: Hinch suspended for 1 year - OutsiderFan - 01-16-2020

Mendoza isn't advocating cheating. Her issue is that Fiers going public was inappropriate. Her belief, which seems completely reasonable to me, is Fiers should have told the A's and MLB so they could take appropriate steps to investigate. This way, Fiers' identity would have been kept under wraps as a whistleblower, and we wouldn't see the ugliness of a player on a team ratting out his former teammates publicly. Jessica loves the sport and doesn't want its dirty laundry aired publicly because this tarnishes MLB's image.

The question of course becomes would MLB have investigated and punished the same, without a public airing of the dirty laundry?  This seems like a fair question to ask Mendoza. I think she's being a bit naive out of her love for the game, more than she has taken the wrong position.

Well, I will defend the statement to this extent:  there is something disingenuous about a team member calling out the misconduct long after it occurs and after he left the team, while he presumably benefited from the misconduct - certainly his team did - real time.

Now, if there are some records of the whistleblower complaining "up-the-ladder" about the cheating within the Astros real-time, then I'll withdraw the disingenuous charge.   But c'mon now . . .

BTW, heard this morning on one of the shows that technology is always advancing so this should be expected and is not that big a deal.  I wholeheartedly DISAGREE with this not being a big deal - knowing what pitch is coming greatly enhances the batter's chances of success (though it also does not guarantee anything).  But if we are going to "surrender" to technology, then why don't we just equip the catcher and pitcher with an ear-piece communications system so only they will know the pitch (the signals can be jettisoned or used as a distraction).  Of course, this could hurt middle-infielders' ability to position and anticipate, based on knowing the pitch, but them's the breaks.  You have to sacrifice something to preclude the overwhelming advantage a hitter would have by employing Astros-like tactics.

RE: Hinch suspended for 1 year - Papa John - 01-16-2020

This past summer I was scorekeeper for the all-stars playoffs for our local Little League district (it was the 11-12 year-old age group that plays in the Little League World Series in Williamsport).

During a semifinal game, the second base umpire stopped play and called out a runner on second base for stealing signs. The runner, who happened to also be the team's best pitcher, and the manager were ejected from the game and ordered to leave the premises. They went across the street from the park and hung out in an Albertson's grocery store parking lot while the game was completed. The cheating team happened to win that game but, per Little League rules, the star player and manager were also ineligible for the championship game versus my son's team. My son's team won, by the way.

My point is this: if Little League International holds both the player and manager responsible, why won't MLB? I can understand a reduction in punishment for an offending player who later offers evidence/testimony, but there's absolutely no disincentive if the player does not have to suffer some kind of consequence.

Papa, your story hits close to home.
I coached a team in All Stars and we lost to an opposing team who had runners signal to the batter what pitch was. coming  I still blame myself for not catching this and somehow finding a way to stop it before the damage was done.  A fan in our stands (who also coached but his son was on another team) brought it to my attention after a bad inning when they scored 6 runs.  TBH, it never crossed my mind that an opposing manager would instruct/allow his kids to do that - it is expressly forbidden in the rules.  Silly me.  But I should have been on it more as the game was a 0-0 affair after 3 innings, and then the opposing team got a runner to 2B with 1 out and then it was smash after smash after smash.  That team beat us; and my belated, later-inning chat with the umps (after I observed the signaling myself) only led to a specific warning to that team as it headed to the semis . . . where they lost.  Not saying we would have won the game, but it still pisses me off that other teams cheat.

And FTR, adults who cheat and lead/instruct our kids are the lowest of the low.  Really.

Reminds me of coaching a 10 year old LL tournament team.  All the south bay leagues were participating.  The Los Gatos coach asks the district representative "Let's say I have my last guy on the bench, I'm getting 10-runned, it's the 4th inning.  What's my incentive to put him in?"  He asked it as a genuine question.  The district rep stumbles, possibly because he'd never heard such naked I-want-to-cheat crap before and said "Well, you'll get in trouble."  LG coach says "What do I care?  It's the last game and my kid is 10 years old."  I looked him in the eye and said "How about because it's the right thing to do?"  LG coach does Olympic eye roll and stuck the landing.  "Oh.  Yeah.  Right." he said in the snarkiest voice possible.

Honestly, it was only the fourth-worst thing I saw an LG parent or coach do in sports.  Not that I hold on to things...

If you are curious which players were involved, an Astros fan went through YouTube video and identified occasions when audible trash can banging occurred.

Sounds like some players were more involved than others.

My son is playing in college now, but I still volunteer as an umpire to facilitate post-season/All-Star games (massive shortage of umpires, for many reasons).  I'm often asked why LL has some of the seemingly crazy/obscure rules that can be found in our little green book.  My answer is usually something along the lines of "just about every crazy rule was necessitated by the actions of some crazy parent!"  Fortunately, the kids who really love the game still make it worthwhile.
