Re: Realignment talk - Extra Point - 09-13-2011

"Am I alone in worrying Texas would be poison for the Pac 12?"

No!

Anyone who thinks Texas is a good idea should check out the posts on the Big 12 messages boards. The Texas AD has personally destroyed the Big 12. The term poison is too mild for him.

So the whole Nebraska leaving first and Texas and Oklahoma trying to keep the B12 together and then A&M leaving and Texas trying to keep the thing together was just a figment of someone's imagination?

Yes, the Pac10, sorry, Pac12 is not intersted at all in being anything other than a comfy, staid recreational league.

Based on the We're No. 5 thread, it looks like the Pac12 could use some of Texas' academic reputation.

Honestly, what do you mean by "culturally"?  Intuitively, Stanford is the only one that is different, and interestingly, Stanford and Texas have historically two of the most successful programs.  UT is very culturally similar to all the state universities in the Pac12.

Quote:That Longhorn Network sure was worth it.

You can make that call now?

Re: Realignment talk - Leftcoast - 09-13-2011

Okay, Oman, maybe we just don't get it.  Why do you think the other Big 12 member schools are so anxious to leave a competitive, profitable league?  To the outside world it sure looks like Texas skipped the week they taught "playing well with others" in kindergarten.

The PAC 10/12 member schools (even the University of Spoiled Children) understand they all prosper if the league is strong.  Think David Ricardo in an athletic sphere.  Texas, on the other hand, seems to fundamentally treat the Big 12 as a zero sum game where they only can prosper at the expense of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Colorado.  Is it any wonder those schools want to flee?

Academically Texas is top notch.  Competitively Texas is top notch.  They'd bring millions of eyeballs to the PAC 12 network.

I still don't want 'em unless they embrace the Pac 12 credo that the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Our conference commissioner may feel differently.

Well, maybe the outside world is satisfied with reading Big12 bulletin boards.  I'd expect the outside world to be a bit more pragmatic in their approach to the facts, and the salient facts are that Nebraska and A&M and Colorado jumped ship.  Now if you have a nice link that shows that Texas didn't play well with others, go ahead.  I am no expert.  It's easier to blame the biggest fish I guess.

Based on what?

Quote: Is it any wonder those schools want to flea?

I am sure they all had very different reasons for wanting to flee.  Not least of which are actual borders with states that have schools in other conferences.  Not least of which may be a better fit.

And not least of which may be the Longhorn Network, but given that Nebraska was seeking its own deal and A&M was allegedly offered to go along with Texas in the early stages, it is hard to know who was the bigger player in making the network the villian.

Quote:I still don't want 'em unless they embrace the Pac 12 credo that the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

I am just curious why you simply can't turn this around and say that the folks who left the Big12 should have felt the same way.

Quote:Our conference commissioner may feel differently.

The Colorado and Utah moves would indicate that.

I think the best reason for not letting OU or Texas in is that they would fandamentally alter the current rivalries -- they are both extremely large and lucrative programs.  The financial deal would get worked out.  But culturally?  Or ethically?  I think that is a stretch.

Meh.  I am going to wait until something actually happens before I pop off about this.

If alignment continues to go this way you will get to be even more old school and get the Pac-8 back.  Give it 10 more years and I would guess the PacMtn-16 could turn into the PacMtn-20.  And THEN you would have the Pac10 back.

I've never accepted the changes to the Pac-8.  :(

I've long favored the recreation of the PCC.
