Re: Davis Mills update - BostonCard - 02-08-2018

It gives me bad flashbacks of Evan Moore dislocating his hip against Navy that sidelined him for 1+ seasons.

Re: Davis Mills update - winflop - 02-08-2018

Once again we are seeing the impact of NOT recruiting a scholarship QB in EVERY SINGLE YEAR...stuff happens.

So spring camp will be Jack Richardson first team, Jay Tyler second team, Tavita Pritchard third team

Except in this case, had we taken Josh Rosen 3 years ago, we would have had 1 QB every single year, and not prevented this problem.
Chryst: Completed 4 years in program would still be transferring
Rosen: (would be) Completed 3 years in program would be going pro
Costello: Completed 2 years in program would still be injured (unless he injured himself playing against TCU)
West: Completed 1 year in program would still be injured

Bottom line, we would still be going into Spring with no healthy quarterbacks.

That being said, I agree with your point.

Re: Davis Mills update - qwerty49 - 02-08-2018

Well, Richardson will get a ton of reps this spring. Woe unto any defender who lays a finger on him.

The subtle impact here is on our D. I’d rather they spent the spring practicing against our first-string QB. But it is what it is.

Actually, thinking about this more, if we had taken Rosen... Costello wouldn't be a returning starter, and Chryst might not graduate-transfer if there is no incumbent and his two competitors for the starting job are both injured.

The flip side is that under this scenario, we are headed into the fall with Chryst as our likely first string QB.

Re: Davis Mills update - washingtonismoney - 02-08-2018

Yeah, we just don't know how it would've played out had Stanford taken a QB in 2015. Most obviously, we don't know _which QB Stanford would've taken_ and _how those QBs would've performed at Stanford._

As an extreme example, obviously a QB can be very effective in Navy's offense, but would be a total non-entity in Stanford's. (And vice versa.) A player can also be better coached in the same scheme as well. So that complicates the counterfactual.

Then there's the Hogan issue -- all QBs would've redshirted a year. So, for example, had Rosen come, and redshirted, he'd be a two-year starter at this point. He'd also presumably be part of a very successful team. I'd imagine that Rosen would've improved Stanford by 1-2 wins total, if not more. If Stanford went, say, 11-3 and 10-4 the past two years, would he have been interested in coming back and trying to go to the playoffs? It doesn't strike me as completely implausible.

On the other hand, the coaches rather famously tried for Ricky Town (who's done nothing in his career) and Brandon Wimbush (who's been a mighty runner but a weak thrower at N.D.) that year. While I think Stanford's coaching is more effective than either SC's or ND's, the most plausible outcome is that both are rather mediocre in the Cardinal's system. While that solves the very small issue of "who will help with practice," it wouldn't really address the broader problems at the position.

Point is the counterfactual looks very difficult to resolve. The most intuitive conclusion, to me at least, is that it's better to have four lottery tickets than three.

Had we taken Rosen, Costello might have gone to U$C. He stated that Stanford not taking a QB in 2015 was one of the reasons he chose us.

Re: Davis Mills update - OutsiderFan - 02-09-2018

It sure seems strange that Shaw would not mention Costello as injured or otherwise unavailable for Spring when he  - without prompting - brought up other injured guys in his Signing Day presser.

Is it clear Rosen would've been the QB 3 years ago? Not clear to me Shaw would've offered him and it may have been someone else. We will never know.

Even if it had been Rosen, only one of Rosen or Costello would have played last season. If Rosen had played, then Costello would not have been injured, not needed surgery, and would be available for spring ball.
