Re: WBB: Western Illinois 71 Stanford 64 - biketoc - 12-19-2017

Someone in an earlier post mentioned the attendance or lack thereof.  An interesting thing happened at the game last night.  Out lower reserved section was pretty much empty, maybe 10 or 15 people at most.  During the second quarter a group of about 5 men sat down in the middle of the section.  Just after halftime a couple of young girls came and sat down in front of the men. The two girls were part of the team that played during half time.  Two of the men were the girls' dads.  A couple of minutes in one of the women ushers came and asked for the girls tickets.  The dad said the girls were with them and that the girls didn't have tickets because they had been playing at half time.  The usher kept insisting they leave, but eventually walked away.  I happened to have two extra tickets with me so I gave them to the girls so they have tickets for the section.  After a few minutes two more ushers come over and they wind up kicking the whole group out.  Do you think these people will be back anytime soon?

Attendance has been slipping for a few years now.  I would assume the main reasons are that most games are now televised so less need to make the effort to go in person and the strange times TV demands put people off.  A cool down of fan interest after the streak of F4s probably has some effect.  Some not too pretty basketball the past few years also hurts.  Very few FBC events, not like the old days, can't help either.  I did not enjoy attending the game Monday.  Fought rush hour traffic for an hour.  Atmosphere at the game was meh, with a small crowd and no band.  The game itself was frustrating to watch, not at all enjoyable except for a few stray moments.  Then an easier but still longish drive home.  There are many people I used to see at games all the time I never see anymore and others I rarely see.

Wow, that’s so stupid on Stanford’s part. Seems to me if you’re invited to play at halftime you are a guest and don’t need a ticket. Usher policy needs to be reviewed. With sparse attendance we should not be caring who sits where after halftime. Perhaps you might send a note to whoever is Dir of WBB Operations, maybe it might rattle a cage. We can’t afford to alienate the local community like that.
