I don't think you can rate any college QB to perform as well as Garappolo has. Even "can't miss" QBs like Luck and Rodgers can't be guaranteed to meet the performance of an above average NFL QBs. The best you can hope for is a "lock" that they won't suck or will at least be average. Until they play against NFL speed defenses, you just don't know how well their skills translate.

If Stanford had Rosen, next year you'd have an untested Costello, a one legged Mills, possibly a fifth year guy who never played and a freshman. I'm glad he went to UCLA. Assuming the OL could have protected him unlike his wimpy teammates in Westwood.

That's one way of looking at it. But how would the 2017 seasons been different with a QB of Rosen's caliber? In 2016, might we have beaten SD St and WSU this year and possible 'SC in the rematch game with the edge Rosen may have given? Would that have put us in the playoffs or at least a NY6 bowl? I like to think that would be a distinct possibility. And I'd like to think Costello would have blossomed on a similar path that he was on leading into this season to be not far off in 2018 where he will be.

But who knows.

Senior Bowl is for players that hope to improve their draft position. I think the practices are as important, if not more, than the game. I think the Shrine game is similar. You don’t get marquis players anymore. I remember when Elway played in the Shrine game. That wouldn’t happen today.

Actually, if Rosen had gone to Stanford, there's a fair chance Costello would have ended up at U$C. It was a close decision for him, I believe, and one of the reasons he stated that he chose Stanford was we hadn't taken a QB in the previous (Rosen's) year.

Also, although I have expressed doubts about Mills's future myself, to assume he will be "one-legged" next year is to assume the worst.

Assume the worst and be really surprised when he wins the H in 2020.

Will he be as good as Garoppolo?  106.8 NFL rating today, 381 yards passing, 31/43; 1 TD, 0 INTs, 3 sacks (26 blitzes of 46 rushes, with no ground game).

Do they rate field goal kickers? SF's must have had a record rating today...

I don't think they rate kickers.  I do know the following:

* Gould made six field goals.  The NFL record is eight, and four other kickers made seven, so Gould is tied for 6th most in NFL history.
* He put six of seven kickoffs into non-returnable territory.  Not too bad...
* The record for most field goals in a season is 40. Gould has 34 (he's 34 for 36) with two games to play.
* Last night, he made four field goals of 45 yards or longer.  Is that a record for most FGs of 45 yards or more in a game?
* He's made 15 field goals in the last three games.  Is that the most field goals over a three game stretch in NFL history?

Gould has been gold for the Niners, but he doesn't do kick-offs for the Niners. Punter Pinion does kick-offs.

Double edged sword if there ever was. He’s been terrific. But it’s also a good indicator of their inability to finish.
