Re: It's Big Game Week! - Papa John - 11-18-2016

Since we're reliving the agony, add the fact that one of the officials started to call the play dead when the Cal player's knee was down. A couple of Stanford players came running off the bench to celebrate, only to realize that the play was still going on. They ran back to the sidelines, but an official saw them and threw the flag for too many players on the field.

OK, maybe it's not a fact, but that's what one of the Stanford players told me after the game. Or at least that's how I choose to remember it...

"Test to hold, Langford to attempt a 50-yarder. Two seconds on the clock.  Last chance for Stanford."

Nice photo.

Little known fact -- Mike Langford had 5 field goals of 50+ yards in his career, including the one in this picture. Langford is tied with Mark Harmon for most 50+ yard FGs in school history.

How many coaches in Stanford history have even let their kickers attempt a 50+ yarder? :)

Re: It's Big Game Week! - terry - 11-18-2016

I haven't tracked 50+ yard misses, only the ones that were made. The Stanford kickers who have made 50+ yard FGs are:

5 Mike Langford
5 Mark Harmon
4 Rod Garcia
3 Conrad Ukropina
3 John Hopkins
2 Derek Belch
2 Mike Michel
2 Eric Abrams
1 Braden Beck
1 Bill Shoemaker
1 Ken Naber
1 David Sweeney
1 Mike Biselli
1 Mike Sgroi
1 Aaron Zagory
1 Nate Whitaker
1 Jordan Williamson

Any correlation between coaches' penchant/aversion to risk or total efficacy of offense?  I would also guess that most of the attempts happened in the fourth quarter...

Well, Ukropina's were:
0:52 in 2nd quarter vs UCF 2015 - 52 yards
9:22 in 1st quarter vs KSU 2016 - 50 yards
4:21 in 1st quarter vs OSU 2016 - 52 yards

From the Daily,

Quote:In the fourth quarter of the rain-soaked 2011 Big Game, Stanford recovered an onside kick from Cal in the final 14 seconds to claim a 31-28 victory under the Stanford Stadium lights. Three starting Stanford quarterbacks watched the clock run down: Andrew Luck from the field, Kevin Hogan from the bench, and Keller Chryst from the bleachers.

It hasn't exactly been a parade for them up to this point. More like Napoleon leaving Russia.
