Re: Injury updates? - Stanford_Cardinals - 09-27-2016

It's worth keeping in mind that this same rotation held UCLA to 3 pts in the second half. Granted, that type of production will be harder to sustain for a whole game but at least the team isn't facing an air raid offense with 100 snaps/ game.

Re: Injury updates? - pcgoode - 09-27-2016

I'm not too worried about missing Owusu or Marx. I think we have two very good receivers ready to go in Rector and Irwin, and JJAW proved himself capable vs UCLA. Chris Harrell did a good job last year when Marx was injured.

The corners are another matter. It seemed to me we weren't as effective last year when Harris and Holder were out. This being said, I've seen commentary to the effect that Browning's weakness is his ability to throw deep, so maybe we don't have to give the UW receivers as much of a cushion as we otherwise might have to.

I think if we see frosh corners appearing that will be a bad sign for the prospects of one or both of Holder and Meeks returning any time soon. We still have 3 corners who have seen considerable playing time and a slew of safeties, and our coaching staff seems quite loathe to burn a redshirt for this sort of temporary need.

I think as against UCLA, we'll alter the way we defend by playing a bigger cushion, but probably not alter rush/blitz packages much.

Though it isn't ideal to be playing without Meeks and Holder, Stanford should be more than capable of overcoming their absence.  Murphy and Alexander are quite experienced players.  Frankly, my biggest concern in this game has nothing to do with Holder or Meeks being out.  It is with Hoffpauir getting singled up with their speedy little receivers.  He consistently lets guys get behind him.  Otherwise, don't sleep on Frank Buncom.  He is ready to emerge IMO.  Really impressed me at the Spring practice I saw.

Stanford played the Pac-12 CG and Rose Bowl without Marx, so I don't think his loss is a mortal would either.  It would be nice to get Taboada back because he is, IMO, the best pass catching TE.  And Stanford is deep the Guard position, with Caspers, Bright, Fanaika, Wilson, and Herbig.

This game on Friday is going to be more decided by how Stanford's offense plays than its defense, IMO.  Another UCLA-type performance on that side of the ball and they will lose, even if Meeks and Holder, Fanaika, Marx, and Owusu were playing.

Re: Injury updates? - Phogge - 09-28-2016

Murphy and Alex have played a lot. I'm more worried about Lloyd. Edwards is the hardest hitting DB and he should play more. For those of your waiting for Harrell, I don't know. He wasn't suited up for SC and Kaden Smith wore #82. Reagan Williams has gotten snaps there. Come out to warmups and take roll call.

JJ has the potential to make corners wish they played safety. More Mac and Love in the slot as the playbook opens up and adios Huskies.

And for the ILB's, cover the damn TE's!

You can only travel with 65 to pac 12 games thus we didn't travel with 3 FBs

But Smuth traveling is very good news

The mystery is Fanika traveling being suited up and not playing

Bobbbbbbbbbbb,

Harrell didn't suit up at home. Williams has gotten snaps. Smith is wearing Harrell's old number. Take a hike from DD's Gate and sit with me during warmups.

Re: Injury updates? - Langdude - 09-28-2016

Yes, the concern is who plays nickel with Alexander at corner. They used Hoffpauir in second half of UCLA game. Not good results; I seem to remember him chasing receivers downfield in the first two games, too. He has skills, but covering fast receivers is not one of them.

Maybe put Buncom (who has not gotten a ton of snaps, so I wouldn't say he is that experienced), Simmons, or Edwards at nickel? Hoff at SS and Reid at FS. Hard to sit a captain (Lloyd), but we have to have speed out there with how ridiculously fast UW is. On passing downs, use Okereke and Fox at ILB?

Re: Injury updates? - OutsiderFan - 09-28-2016

Buncom at nickel and the third CB makes sense to me.

As for the ILBs, Branch and Perez would seem to be the fastest and the ones used in passing situations the most.  You know Branch wants to have a big game, being from Bellevue and all.
