The QB competition in 2018 could be interesting: redshirt senior Chryst, if he's still here, redshirt sophomore Costello and redshirt freshman Mills.

Yeah, I would assume that a decision would have to be made by the end of spring ball so if Chryst is not the guy he can go somewhere else to play as a graduate transfer.

This assumes we don't experience another mid-season shift a la 2012. I wouldn't carve it in stone that Burns will play out the year as the starter.

Quarterbacks have been pretty healthy since Andrew Luck was injured and out for the season at the end of '09 (knock wood). Even if Burns excels, it would be a disaster not to have a viable 2nd option. And Shaw was asked by a reporter if a preference for going with the younger of the two factored in and he said not at all, if that means anything. Said something about emphasizing a purity of competition (in a loose quote of Pep Hamilton).

Yes, Mikavid Shawgren!

You are prophetic (and correct) regarding the need for a capable backup.  Look at the way the Oregon offense dropped off last year in efficiency once Lockie entered games that Adams Jr. had to leave due to injury.  It wasn't pretty and the Duck fans I know (whether fair or not) despise Lockie as a starting QB.

I am confident if Christ came in the Cardinal offense would not sputter.

Is that anything like Purity of Essence?

Can't think of where else to post this, but one thing I just noticed.  Hogan started his career beating 4 straight ranked teams, and ended it beating 3 straight ranked teams.

For what it's worth Fborg and I have always thought that Burns throws a beautiful ball. Going to be interesting when the Second Coming shows up in Palo Alto next summer. If Burns is The Guy expect either Chryst or Costello to transfer, perhaps both.

I don't see Chryst or Costello transferring.  Costello too young, Chryst a dedicated local and has a year more of eligibility.
[/quote]

Chryst has 2 years of eligibility after this year.

Chryst is a graduate transfer risk.  He has used his red shirt year, so an undergrad transfer is unlikely.  Watch out for the grad transfer specialists in Eugene.

QB injuries are common.  Look at Kansas St last year.  They lost their starting QB in the first quarter of the first game of the season.  Then they soon lost their 2nd string QB.  Chryst still has a brobdingnagian chance to still win the job or to see time due to Burns getting injured (not that I hope Burns gets injured.)

We're going to be looking at a lot of transfer risks going forward. It will not be possible for each of  Burns, Chryst, Costello, Mills, West, and whoever comes next to all be multi-year starters .

It's interesting to recap Shaw's QB recruiting.
2011 - Crower, Hogan
2012 - None (made an effort on Winston)
2013 - Burns
2014 - Chryst
2015 - None (made effort on Town, maybe Wimbush, NOT Rosen)
2016 - Costello
2017 - Mills
2018 - West

Somewhere during the 2015 recruiting cycle Shaw made some comments that he never wanted to offer more than one QB at a time, and some years one needs to take a break from recruiting a QB so that the logjam at the position wasn't too bad. This came with the insinuation that Stanford simply didn't want a QB in The Year of Rosen. Many fans went ballistic over that statement, with comments that you never knew which QBs would work out, when injuries would occur, so one should stockpile as many QBs as possible.

Now Shaw's comments about taking a break were at least somewhat disingenuous, as during both years he did not sign a QB he made at least some effort to do so. Nevertheless, he seems to have followed the rule about only offering one at a time and one can see that if you do have a successful run of signing very high profile QBs you will end up with a logjam.

The second part on KSU isn't exactly true. Ertz had won the starting job and then got immediately injured in the first game. Alex Delton, who was viewed as a promising true frosh, did get injured in game #2, but he was not the 2nd string or immediate replacement for Ertz; that was Josh Hubener.  Denton had come in for a few "package"-type plays which included zero passes and four rushing attempts.

What qualifies Chryst as a "dedicated local"? He grew up in San Diego and Phoenix, attended high school in North Carolina for two years (when his father coached with the Panthers) and then two years at Paly while his father coached with the 49ers. Now his father has been fired by the 49ers and will surely move to wherever his next job takes him, meaning that Keller will have no immediate family in the area.

There's no reason for Chryst to transfer immediately, but down the road it could make sense for him (especially as a grad transfer) depending on how things develop, and there's no evidence that his minimal local ties will be a factor in his decision.

Re: Ryan Burns it is - BobK - 08-25-2016

Two things:
Chryst's uncle is the Wisconsin Head Coach, FYI

Hogan and Crower were recruited by Harbaugh.  Yes signed right after Shaw
Named Head Coach

I don't know when the star system was started. I think John Elway and Randy Fasani were at the five-star level or whatever the equivalent was at the time.

I think it's a good idea to recruit multiple QBs.  You never know when you're going to end up with this guy:

Re: Ryan Burns it is - martyup - 08-25-2016

I'm glad the better runner got the nod.  It is so important to have a qb that can get first downs with his legs.  Time and again Hogan kept drives alive with his legs.  Burns baby Burns!  Burns it up!
