I should note that if Stanford clinches a spot in the P12 Championship game, that would give McCaffrey at least one extra game. In this case he'd only need to average 215.4 ypg to top Sanders.

We are already bowl-eligible, but that doesn't count for Sanders' record, right?

Bowl games count, as of a few years ago.

But Sanders's yards from his bowl game that year don't count. Which makes perfect sense.

This was exactly where I was unclear. Thanks for clarifying. You'd think they'd be consistent, but then you'd be wrong, I guess...

Re: The Mac Meter - terry - 11-07-2015

The NCAA started counting bowl games in the stats in 2002. But the rule was not retroactive, so pre-2002 bowl games do not count. However, some schools and conferences, including Stanford and the Pac-12, have gone back and made retroactive changes in their record books to count pre-2002 bowl games. So, the NCAA lists Barry Sanders' all purpose yardage record as 3,250 yards, while Oklahoma State adds the bowl game that year and lists the record as 3,526 yards.

Well in terms of the Voldemort it doesn't matter since that's handed out before the bowl games.

I expect him to shatter both the school and conference records but fall about 200 short of Sanders' record by the end of the CCG.  Regardless, it's been amazing and I feel fortunate to have been able to see much of it up close.  The kid is nails on the field and all class off it.

Re: The Mac Meter - Hank 91 - 11-15-2015

Because we're in need of some good news this morning...

Christian McCaffrey's All-Purpose Yardage
Through 10 Games:

Rushing: 1.354 yards
Receiving: 367 yards
Punt Ret: 32 yards
Kick Ret: 665 yards
Total: 2,418 yards
Average: 241.8 ypg

NEW STANFORD RECORD

Pac-12 Record -- 2,683 yards (Marqise Lee)
*Needs to Average: 88.67 ypg

NCAA Record -- 3,250 yards (Barry Sanders)
*Needs to Average: 277.67 ypg

* Assuming Stanford plays only 3 more games.

Other notes on where McCaffrey stands in the Stanford record book...

• McCaffrey now ranks fourth on the single-season rushing list, with first place within reach.
• He is now 17th on the career rushing list, twenty yards behind Jon Volpe.
• His eighth-straight 100-yard game is a record.
• Those eight triple-digit games rank eighth on the career list and third on the single-season list.
• His 665 yards returning kickoffs is 5th on the single season list. He'll likely get to third.

Whoa! Are you predicting a Big Game loss?

Re: The Mac Meter - winflop - 11-15-2015

Rushing leaders among Voldemort candidates

RK PLAYER TEAM ATT YDS YDS/A LONG TD
2 Derrick Henry, RB ALA 240 1458 6.1 74 19
3 Ezekiel Elliott, RB OSU 220 1425 6.5 80 16
7 Christian McCaffrey, RB STAN 231 1354 5.9 70 7

So McCaffrey is not too far off the top based on RUSHING YARDAGE ALONE.  Add in over 1,000 yds receiving & returning and why he's not #1 is all you need to know about anti-West Coast bias.

Re: The Mac Meter - Hank 91 - 11-15-2015

On my site I've been figuring the averages based on the number of games remaining on the schedule. Once we became bowl eligible, that number was 13. The asterisk implies that there could be an extra game (P12CG), and before last night it meant there could've been two extra games. That's all.

Re: The Mac Meter - winflop - 11-15-2015

So assuming Stanford wins on Saturday, McCaffrey will need to average 209 ypg to break Sanders' record.  Very achievable.

Re: The Mac Meter - Hank 91 - 11-15-2015

Yup.

Re: The Mac Meter - Hank 91 - 11-22-2015

Currently:

Christian McCaffrey's All-Purpose Yardage
Through 11 Games:

Rushing: 1,546 yards
Receiving: 416 yards
Punt Ret: 32 yards
Kick Ret: 813 yards
Total: 2,807 yards
Average: 255.18 ypg

NEW STANFORD RECORD
NEW PAC-12 RECORD

NCAA Record -- 3,250 yards (Barry Sanders)
*Needs to Average: 148 ypg

* Assuming Stanford plays only 3 more games.

You'll notice that the addition of the Pac-12 Championship game makes the NCAA record easily within reach. A few other notes on McCaffrey after last night's performance, most already known:

• School single-game record for APY with 389, ten more than Milburn's in 1990 Big Game.
• Ninth-straight 100-yard game, extending his own school record.
• His 1,546 yards rushing rank third in Stanford history, 325 yards behind Gerhart's record.
• With 1,846 career rushing yards, he's 13th in school history.
• He and Hogan are 403 yards behind Gerhart and Luck's record as the top rushing tandem in Stanford history.
• He is third on the school's single-season kick return list, 354 yards behind Owusu's record.

Finally, the NCAA rushing leaders:
1. Fournette, 1582
2. McCaffrey, 1546
3. Freeman, 1539
4. Henry, 1526

So even without all the receiving and kick return yardage, he looks like a Voldemort candidate. When you add them in, he's your winner.

Couple of questions/comments.

1. Does anyone have the breakdown of Milburn's yards vs c.a.l. in 1990?

My memory is that the former was more spectacular, but it could be either my own age or the fact that the game was much more dramatic.

Have to say I find kickoffs somewhat cheap-yards in these calculations - or at least should really be counted vs. the touchback position. [i.e. if you return 5 kickoffs from the endzone to the 20 yard line you get 100 all purpose yards, but you have actually cost your team 25 yards versus taking a knee.]

2. The NCAA rushing leaders list above is total yards on the season. Rather misleading given that McCaffrey has played more games than most of those guys.

Per game the list is:
1. Fournette (LSU) 158.2
2. Rose (NMSU) 148.1
3. Cook (FSU) 147.5
4. McCaffrey (Stanford) 140.6
5. Freeman (Oregon) 139.9

Still fairly impressive.

Re: The Mac Meter - FarmBoy - 11-22-2015

Thanks for the update, Hank. Amazing performance by a true sophomore. Toby was a 4th year Junior during his record breaking season, right? An interesting contrast with Toby is that TG was the go to guy for short yardage situations while McCaf is subbed out in those situations. I think that he's more explosive on the margins, but it also feels like he's running through bigger holes. Is there a source for yards after contact that we could compare the two on?

Part of me will be a bit disappointed if/when he breaks Toby's record.

Re: The Mac Meter - larkinforever - 11-22-2015

I'm really enjoying McCaffrey this season, all the more so because he is only a true sophomore, and we'll get to enjoy seeing him for at least one more season.

Here are a couple other items I'd like to add to this discussion:
(1) Barry Sanders scored 37 TDs during his 3,250 all-purpose yards season (and as mentioned by others, in 11 games) - the TDs are not material to the all-purpose record but still an amazing stat worth sharing; and
(2) not to let facts get in the way of a good Stanford narrative, but in the Voldemort conversation (as opposed to all-purpose yards conversation) being interwoven into this thread by some, TDs are also relevant and McCaffrey has relatively few (11 total including 7 rushing TDs, Fournette has 17, Henry 21) - yes, we all know that Wright is our short yardage/goal line guy.

In the end, though Fournette is going to wind up playing only 13 games; McCaffrey gets a 14th.  Or to put it another way, both guys have three games left.
