Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 05-18-2015

Fehoko remains a lock and Williams obviously enjoyed the visit to Stanford, but there haven't been too many other gushing tweets from the 2016 recruits about the Junior Day this weekend.  I wonder if we will see offers to some of the guys waiting in the wings, such as Quansah, Eboh, Stewart, Bisharat, or Alves.  All but Stewart are 247Sports composite Top-400 recruits, so they can hardly be characterized as Plan B recruits.

The Opening sharing the weekend might not have helped - Redrum - 05-18-2015

The two-fer weekend might have brought in some more participants at Stanford, but it might also have interfered with "Stanford experience" of owning kids' mindspace without distraction...much like changing TV channels quickly dilutes your engagement with the last channel you were watching before you changed your focus.

Not surprising at all.  Those pics he posted on his west coast trip were quite telling.  Has Stanford ever flipped a recruit committed to USC?  Can't every remember it happening.

Oh, yes.  Duh.  That was just two years ago two!

The story posted a while back about his visit to various schools pointed toward USC.  Seemed most excited about them, especially his meeting Tee Martin.  Comments about Stanford were only lukewarm.  Disappointing, but hardly surprising.

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 05-18-2015

David Long's recruiting profile is exploding.  In the last week, he got invitations to The Opening Finals and the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as well as offers from U$C and UDFG.  A Stanford win in this recruitment would be h.uge.

Meanwhile, Treyjohn Butler and Garrett Rand also received USAAB invitations this month.

I think some here expressed concern that a number of the highly rated players Shaw was pursuing (Butler, Fehoko, Rand) lacked elite offers, but the offers and accolades seem to be coming into line with the recruiting rankings.  As is par for the course, it looks like Shaw is going to have to battle with elite programs for almost all of the 4-star recruits he's pursuing.

Here's an article on his commitment.

Sounds like our friends from the Southland are having some success convincing recruits that they, too, are a "40 year decision".

Guess we should have patented that one. :)

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 05-19-2015

USC is such a loathsome institution.  They have tried to claim academic par to Ca.l and Stanford for a long time, but they are only getting more brazen about it.

They have systematically brought in high achieving students from abroad to raise their USNWR rankings and hired top professors, while not doing a thing to raise standards for football players.  They are duplicitous in that in one breath they claim how their educational opportunities are on par with Stanford, and then in the next tell a recruit they will make sure to give him classes that don't interfere with football.

Ca.l also uses "40 year decision" in its pitch, but at least they have some legitimate claim based on the esteem the school is held in globally.  USC is the spoiled trust fund kid who's daddy is buying entry into elite schools because the kid doesn't have the academic chops to make it in otherwise.  In USC's case, just substitute football talent for daddy's money.

The USC pitch probably goes like this:  Why bother with AP classes and all that other stuff you have to do at Stanford, when you can graduate from USC with just as quality of an education, and play for the program that has produced the most NFL players?

The U$C recruiting pitch definitely includes the "You're going to get just as good an education here as you would at Stanford." bit.

Don't know if we do anything (or even if we should) to counter it.

I loathe our southern neighbors as much as anyone, but ...

I think the first part is called trying to make yourself a better institution.
The second part is kind of annoying, but only places them on par with 100+ other FBS universities - and despite public awareness of football it is a rather small part of the institution.

But of course you probably just meant "U$€ football is such a loathsome institution."

Quote:Ca.l also uses "40 year decision" in its pitch, but at least they have some legitimate claim based on the esteem the school is held in globally.  U$€ is the spoiled trust fund kid who's daddy is buying entry into elite schools because the kid doesn't have the academic chops to make it in otherwise.

While I am sure the spoiled kid without academic chops is universally true at the place, I also note that every school is now telling football recruits that they represent a 40 year decision. The phrase is far from unique.

Quote:The U$€ pitch probably goes like this:  Why bother with AP classes and all that other stuff you have to do at Stanford, when you can graduate from U$€ with just as quality of an education, and play for the program that has produced the most NFL players?

Of course the S.-C. pitch goes like that, though I suspect "the most NFL players" part is stressed a lot more than that sentence would indicate.
Substitute some other related phrase for "the most NFL players" and every place that recruits against Stanford more or less has that pitch. I mean it has to be something pretty close to that, doesn't it? Two options that won't work are a) "come to S.-C. because we are a higher ranked institution", or b) "yeah it's true - Stanford is better, but we still kind of hope you choose us."

Re: Class of 2016 - Mick - 05-19-2015

My sister just informed me (with some incredulity) that her neighbor's niece was admitted to U$C for the frosh year, spring semester.  This is a family we've known for more than four decades.  All of the women in the family share a genetic disability with respect to processing math functions and have less debilitating (but still present) disabilities with respect to reading and knowledge retention.  The grandmother of the $C admittee, for example, cannot tell you whether 3/4 is larger than 2/3 or vice versa.  Her daughter (my sister's peer) flunked out of Mitty and barely squeaked by freshman algebra as a senior at her public high school, by working two hours a night on algebra.  I'd met her daughter (the girl who was admitted to U$C), and while she is a very nice, sweet young lady, I genuinely would have been surprised (if not shocked) if she'd been admitted to one of the lower level state CSUs.
Two other thoughts, though.  I've heard from several sources that U$C can be susceptible to the "full court press."  One of our good friends was admitted there via spring semester, due to what can only be called carpet-bombing admissions tactics.  He did well there too, president of his fraternity and he did graduate.  And knowing this family, I have no doubt that this was their strategy.  And...her family is quite wealthy.  Olympic Club, St. Francis Woods, hobnobs with billionaires wealthy.

Jake Curhan, an OL prospect who visited for the March Junior Day, but did not have an offer, decided to commit to a safety school:
