the pipeline from Atlanta - TrumpCard - 07-10-2014

Sorry I'm late to the game.  I recently saw the Wilson and Sheffield commitments.  I'm just commenting because I haven't seen anyone recently note the importance of the pipeline from Atlanta.  Wilson and Farrar are the only 2 football commits rated 4-star on Rivals and Sheffield is a 4-star MBB commit, and all 3 of them are from the Atlanta area.

LA Times report on a big SoCal passing tournament last weekend.  You will see the names of several Stanford targets (both current and past) including Trent Irwin.  Perhaps some future Stanford recruits in there as well.

Reading the comments on both of the links you have posted, the Penn State faithful fully expect him to flip. If we do, we have flipped a Franklin commit each year for the last three years - Tyler, Burkett, and possibly Wimbush. The crystal ballers aren't always correct when predicting against Stanford, but they have been much better at predicting for Stanford. I like the shift even if some of it is a group-think response.

Personally, I think Wimbush wants to be a Stanford guy, but is holding on to the sure thing for now....would love to see him don a Cardinal jersey.

Is that after reading the linked article or before?  One answer would suggest ignorance and the other denial, two words that probably apply to most ND fans posting on message boards, yes?

There was some discussion before the article came out. Usually it is some "close family source". Seem to think it is SC-ND.

Hardly matters at this point. The longer guys like this take to decide the better. Take the APs, do the application, wait until you know where you have been accepted, then decide.

Cameron Scarlett names Top 5 on Twitter today:  ND, Stanford, UCLA, UO, UW

Thankfully no Stanford fans @ replied to him.  Can't say the same for ND, UCLA, and UW.

It seems Stanford is in good shape with him, and man is RB a need position, especially one who is or will be north of 210 lbs.  What makes Scarlett unique is that he is more of a receiver who plays some RB than a RB who can catch.

I've always wondered about that. Does a non-booster fan have the same NCAA restriction over social media as those who can be classified as boosters? It seems that every other schools' fans tweet @ their prospects but Stanford fans tend to "like" a post and generally do not tweet at the prospects. I know the Stanford Compliance twitter regularly tweets out a message reminding Stanford fans to let the coaches do the recruiting, but is it a violation to engage on social media if you are not a booster?

Maybe its just down right rude, counter-productive, and mean to harass a young man you don't know on social media.  Maybe even creepy.  If you're 17, go for it.  If 27+, just smile and let it go, man.

I agree, but none of that answers any of my questions substantively. 

It seems that other fans who are constantly tweeting directly at recruits are either not boosters and/or are of the stripe that Ferrari paints which means they aren't doing anything that could be considered an NCAA violation.

I know it's only July, but is it time to get concerned about the lack of commitments in the Class of 2015 yet?  I count just five (Folau, Farrar, Manu, Chaffin, Wilson), whereas there might be a total of 18-20 spots in the class.  Right now, we have fewer commitments than every other Pac-12 school, and are several behind the other top Pac-12 teams (UCLA has 11, and Oregon, ASU, and USC have 12--Arizona leads the way with 17, but I wouldn't call them a "top" team).  I know that Stanford hasn't always led the way with the number of committed recruits early in the process, but it seems as if we're lagging behind our conference brethren more so than usual. 

But whereas we'd need another 13-15 guys to complete the class, we only have about 10 guys for whom we're either the top choice or among the top choices (for these purposes, I'm not counting guys who may have expressed some interest in us but list other schools as stronger favorites, such as a guy putting us as "Warm" on 247 but behind a couple of other schools at "Warmer").  My list of guys where we've offered scholarships and have a high degree of mutual interest (defined as either among a prospect's Top 5 list or listed as one of the prospect's preferred schools on 247) is as follows:  Canton Kaumatule, Frank Buncom IV, Equanimeous St. Brown, Trent Irwin, Cameron Scarlett, Bryce Love, Osa Masina, Henry Roberts, and Jordan Fox.  That's just nine guys.  Adding Wimbush gets us to 10.    So we'd basically need to sweep all currently highly interested targets (crazy unlikely), suffer no decommitments (somewhat unlikely), and get every last target through the admissions process (simply will not happen).

(Assumptions:  (1) the 12 5th-year seniors listed on the current roster are all on scholarship for this year, or else they would have left following their academic senior year; (2) in addition to the 3 academic seniors who will have exhausted eligibility (Ty Montgomery, Jordan Richards, and James Vaughters), additional academic seniors who could take a 5th year may choose not to do so (maybe Kevin Anderson or Kevin Hogan with monster years, or Wayne Lyons if he chooses not to seek a medical waiver for a 5th year); (3) we will lose at least one academic junior (Andrus Peat) to the draft; (4) we will lose at least one scholarship player to a medical retirement; (5) we will not invite back a couple of seniors for 5th years. That's a minimum of 16 departures, with a few more likely from retirements, early entries, etc.  I acknowledge that there are potential deficiencies in my assumptions (for example, I'm not sure that John Flacco, Eddie Plantaric, and Jeff Trojan are on scholarship, even though they're 5th-year seniors), but the point remains the same--there look to be more openings in the class than we have interested, highly-ranked targets to fill them.)

So what's next?  One would expect that we'd land a good number (but not all) of the kids where we're a top choice, and that we might well flip a kid currently committed to another school once the fat envelope arrives (even in addition to Wimbush).  But unfortunately, we just don't seem to be very high on enough top recruits' lists, so we'll likely have to fill out the class with more high 2-star guys and low 3-star guys than we've been used to these past few years.  Not the end of the world, certainly, but not the rarefied air we've been breathing the last few years, either. 

Is it just too early to be concerned about this yet?  Are there other highly-rated prospects that I'm just missing?  Anyone have good information on the likelihood of certain players to leave early?  If I'm being unduly pessimistic, please set me straight!

When July ended in 2013, Stanford had 10 commitments.  That was after all camps were done.  This weekend is the last big camp weekend of the year on the farm, so one would expect a few more commitments then or shortly after.

One thing to consider is the Stanford football staff itself may be encouraging recruits to hold off on their commitments longer, until they are admitted, or have more data on who will be admitted.  Though admissions casualties have been relatively few, I'm sure each one pains the staff quite a lot.  I mean when Kirk Tucker was denied, it was like a death almost, when looking back on how proud and happy he was when he committed to Stanford.

One question I think all Stanford fans have is "when does the consecutive Rose Bowl bump" start showing up in recruiting?  It wouldn't be surprising if there is no such bump because there must be more talent with the academic chops to get into Stanford, for a bump to happen.  It just might not exist in this class.

Agreed.  I don't see how a significant bump could occur regardless of how many Rose Bowls we play in.  The best we can hope for is to get the best of the brightest; we will never get the best of the rest.
