Fisher is a bum.  But I really don’t see how that equates to the rest of major league baseball. Which is in fact, thriving

Fisher is such an embarrassment. When MLB does things like allowing Fisher to treat the A’s like his personal fiefdom, I start to question why I’m paying attention to baseball. I’m hoping that the Las Vegas deal fails. The Chron reporters seem to think it’s smoke and mirrors at this point.

Did JD Davis sign with Oakland thinking his home games were going to be in a 10,000 seat stadium in Sacramento?

They aren’t JD will  be traded at the deadline.  Or, move on next year.

Glad that JD is doing well. 22 ABs, 8 hits two doubles, two HRs, .364 avg, .417 OBP, 1.144 OPS. Much better hitting than Chapman, but Chapman has fielded like crazy. Chap's had 22 chances, 0 errors in 58 innings. JD has had one error in 7 chances in 47 innings at 3B. He's already -2 Rtot. I watched four innings of one game where Chapman fielded two ridiculous balls that JD wouldn't come within a yard of, and Chap threw out both runners. Very glad Chapman's a Giant.

Jordan Hicks is pretty good. I'm impressed.

It's fun to watch him pitch. He's always had great stuff, has a pretty well developed splitter and sinker and has (apparently) learned how to conserve his arm. Pitched 7 innings, 5 strikeouts, no walks, 5 hits, has a 0.75 ERA on the season. Great call by Farhan.

And it's good to see Bailey hitting well, .333 after getting two hits in three of the past five games. Bailey and Giants have third best WAR by the catcher position in the major leagues. Hope it continues.

The Pirates, on the other hand, have the 26th best WAR at the catcher position. Their #1 and #2 catchers, Henry Davis and Jason Delay have 4 hits in 31 at bats, 5 walks and 10 strikeouts. Yesterday, they tried out their #3 catcher, fella named Joey Bart, who had a double and a home run (410 feet, left center, 109 exit velo), current OPS is 1.600. #2 OPS on that team, incidentally, is Connor Joe at .980. #6 is Bryan Reynolds at .819. Bart didn't have an error or passed ball, but allowed three stolen bases.

One think I really liked about Bruce Bochy was that if you hit a home run, you played the next day. Today, Joey Bart is sitting in favor of Henry Davis (.143 BA). On the other hand, the Pirates are 7-2, so SFG's farm team is doing well...

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-08-2024

After ten games, a few observations on the Giants:

1) The Giants have three errors in 10 games, projecting to 48 for the season (Giants had 117 last season). The Diamondbacks led MLB in fewest errors last year with 56. The Giants are currently T8 in fielding percentage, 11th in chances and 14th in putouts, but 4th in assists and first in double plays.

2) Bailey leads MLB in passed balls (2), T3 in errors with 1. Murphy also has a passed ball, so the Giants lead the majors in PBs, but they're tied for best in the majors with just one wild pitch.

3) Giants are 24th in OPS+, but I suspect they'll do better once they clear the Padre and Dodger pitching staffs. They're the only team without a stolen base. They don't have a triple, either. And their OBP is very low at .296. Basically average in both walks and strikeouts.

4) Giants are 25th in runs per game allowed and ERA, 27th in strikeouts, but 7th in fewest walks given up.  21st in WHIP.

BTW, the Pirates batted Joey Bart #9 against Detroit. He went 1 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs. No strikeouts. He's batting .429 and he gave up two more stolen bases. Good for JB.

4-8.  No offense.  Not the start they hoped for.  Don’t know what I hope for more a win or a stolen base……

Perhaps throwing someone out who's trying to steal?

Who'd have thought that the A's would have a better winning percentage at this point of the season. . . .

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-10-2024

Interesting how many pieces are failing simultaneously.

Bailey's off to a good start (.296/.782), Conforto's hitting .310, Wade is hitting .344. That's the good news. On the other hand, Yaz hasn't been an all-star player in years, now hitting .130 which exceeds Matos, Fitzpatrick's and Slater's collective .000 in 17 plate appearances. Estrada's at .174. Flores is about average at .269, OPS .653, but lots of Dodger pitching in there. Expensive acquisitions Chapman (.184), Soler (.209), Jung Hoo Lee (.255), Murphy (.111) are underperforming. Nick Ahmed's at .222, about what we'd thought and better than Crawford's .167 for St. Louis. JD Davis has faded after a torrid start. Joey Bart is tearing the cover off the ball, hitting .375, OPS of 1.319.

Hicks has a 0.75 ERA. None of the other starters have an ERA better than 4.76. Star closer Doval has a 6.75 ERA. Team ERA is 5.42, 14th of 15 NL teams.

Giant OPS is 12th of 15 NL teams, runs scored is 11th.

They're still getting it together.  Last year's team started 6-13 before going on a 55-36 tear, which -- unfortunately -- they couldn't keep up. At least they got rid of the unstable players from last year.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - cardcrimson - 04-10-2024

There's been an awakening. . . .

12 hits, 7 runs. Hicks gives up one run over six innings.

SFG's #8 and #9 hitters, Nick Ahmed (.282) and Fitzgerald (.500) were 6 for 6 with five runs and three RBIs.

Stanford watch: Slater went 1 for 3 with an RBI from the leadoff spot, and Erik Miller closed it out with three strikeouts in the ninth, dropping his ERA from 10.75 to 9.00.

Hicks is just amazing to watch. And the Giants had their first, second and third stolen bases (Chapman, and 2 by Fitzgerald) and their first triple by 98 year old Nick Ahmed.

Odd stat: four of the top 5 hitters in the NL, as measured by number of hits, are Dodgers (Smith, Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman).

RE: SF Giants 2024 - old spanish trail - 04-10-2024

Really great that Gyros told Hicks he could be a starter if he signed. He can't be much better.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-12-2024

According to this firewall-protected article in The Athletic, the Giants can't or won't hit fastballs straight down the middle. Statistically speaking, the Giants are the worst in the majors, by far, at hitting that specific pitch, hitting just .220. Braves are hitting .420, average team hitting .319. Giants lead the league with 43 first-pitch fastballs down the middle taken (not swung at), and the second place team is 14 behind them. Giants have taken five pitches down the middle in 2-0 counts...nine teams haven't done that a single time. And Giants have the third lowest slugging percentage on those pitches.

https://theathletic.com/5406387/2024/04/12/sf-giants-middle-fastball-problem/

There's a few other tidbits; e.g., Jung Hoo Lee and Chapman are among the top five in baseball at hard hit ball percentage...yet their OPS is very low.

Sounds pretty grim. Really hope it is a statistical anomaly.

Hopefully, Farhan & his analytics crew have taken note of the fact that the Giants are undefeated this season whenever they steal a base.  ;-)

Sacto A's fans don't appear to like John Fisher any more than Oakland A's fans do:

Right on time: Sacramento A's fans are already furious at John Fisher

it will be interesting to see what the seat prices are relative to the River Cats games

My best friend lives in Sacramento.  His response to the news: "No interest.  We already have a minor league team."

Cheers,

I would actually pay to see a River Cats vs. Sacto Athletics game.

Giants are high up on “hard hit rate”.  Unfortunately, it hasn’t led to scoring runs.  Hopefully, that luck changes.

The “fastball down the middle” issue jives with my eye test. Personally, I think they need to be significantly more aggressive at the plate.  But organizationally, the approach has been “patient aggression “ for some time.  There is, they say, no such thing as a fastball count.  Having said that - if I’m up in the count 2-0 or 3-1, I’m looking for the pitch I want.  Not what I think the pitcher is going to throw.  And I’m at least concentrating on a zone.  Middle to middle in, thigh to belt high.

Attack more.  Please.

Very evident last night. The game was on at a restaurant where I was having dinner, Giants have a guy on third with one out in the top of the ninth. On a 2-0 count, the batter took a fastball right down the middle. He flied out on a tough pitch and they never got the runner in, game over.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-13-2024

Someone's been paying attention. In an 11-2 win over the Rays, Giants (6-9) hit five home runs, Estrada had two, Soler, Chapman and Wade also hit HRs. Conforto, Bailey and Lee had doubles. And they had two DPs, pretty cool. Webb got the win, he pitched 7 innings, gave up one run. Estrada raised his average sixty or so points to .224. Nice to see the breakout, Giants had gone 7 straight games without a home run.

Got so bad that the Rays put a position player in the 8th inning. Chapman hit an off-field HR off of him, Fitzgerald struck out and flew out against Rortvedt (normally a catcher).

Stanford alum Erik Miller struck out two in the ninth inning, gave up no hits or walks. Slater went 0 for 1.
