Whose projection? you can't simply apply a team's win percentage to date to the rest of the season.
Sure you can.  I just did.  It was easy

I don't think FanGraphs' record with the Giants is very strong.

In yesterday’s Chronicle, John Shea suggested not so good…

Overall, only three of 25 hitters who signed for $6 million+ are batting above their career OPS so far this season.  Chris Taylor, Joc Pederson and C. J. Cron.

You can definitely put Kris Bryant into that category.  Chris's career line is .278/.376/.501/.877.  His line this year is .270/.342/.333/.676.  More than 200 points below career average OPS.  His OPS+ was 111 for the Giants last year, now 85.  Remember, below 100 is below average.  BTW, Bryant's postseason averages with the Giants were awesome.  His other postseasons?  Not so much.

From what I read Colorado offered him way more than any other team. Bad signing. That was obvious at the time.  As I said, I don’t want the Giants to just throw money around…..

RE: 2022 Giants thread - OutsiderFan - 06-07-2022

I've determined the Giants aren't making the Wild Card. No way are they holding off the Braves and Phillies, who both have more overall talent.

After the Dodgers smoke the Giants this weekend, I want the Giants to get younger so badly that I'm more inclined to be a seller at the trade deadline than either a buyer or standing pat.

Just tired of half the team being injured all the time because they are all over 30.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Phogge - 06-07-2022

With that attitude I wouldn't want you in my dugout.

They still have to play the games. Geeeeesh!

RE: 2022 Giants thread - DC 86 - 06-07-2022

I'm with Phogge on this one, there's no reason to take a defeatist attitude, and I would bet on the Giants making the playoffs as a wild card team as well.

The Giants do need to get younger and spend more of their owners' money, but that's another matter.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - OutsiderFan - 06-07-2022

I'm not being defeatist about what I want to see happen. I'm being a discriminating consumer.

There is no way in hell the Giants are winning the World Series in 2022. I've reached the point where that is my goal, especially after 107 wins didn't win a playoff series in 2021 and 3 WS titles in the 2010's.

The Giants have the worst defense and are one of the slowest teams in MLB. This makes solid pitching less effective and makes scoring runs more difficult. It's not a recipe for winning a championship.

The Giants actually have the second worst defense in MLB (if you believe in Team DRS), but interestingly the worst defensive team in MLB is Philadelphia, which is the team that SF may be fighting for a WC spot down the stretch.

Over the weekend I heard a broadcast say the Giants just became the worst defense in MLB. I don't know the exact metric or source, but this doesn't change the fact their defense is old, slow, and not good.

Wilmer Flores is a DH. Tommy La Stella is a DH. Yet despite the fact they are ideal DH platoon switches for each other, one of them plays in the field when neither can run well because their bats are needed.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Giants - 06-07-2022

Yep, the Giants do need to get younger.  They are well on their way towards that goal.  Unfortunately, Zaidi walked into a farm system that was bereft of talent. It takes time to build a pipeline that will provide a steady stream of players who can play effectively at the big league level.

Currently, the Giants have a quite a few guys who appear to be ready to make their debut over the next couple seasons.  It will be interesting to see how those players are integrated into the mix and how the Giants handle the sunset of the careers of the older guys.

One other thought…

The most valuable lesson I have learned from following sports over the last sixty+ years is enjoy the ride and don’t pin everything on winning the last game.  The two professional teams I follow most closely are the Giants and 49ers.  Since 1958, they have won a collective eight championships. That is 6.25% (8/128) of all seasons played or 120 “failures”.  In most aspects of life, if you are batting .0625, you stop beating yourself up and move on to something else.  Sports is different.  We stick with it for that 1 in 16 shot.  Enjoy the ride!

RE: 2022 Giants thread - cardcrimson - 06-07-2022

And the average is about 1 every 30 per league. . . .

An interesting read. Cities with the longest championship droughts:

My suggestion is that if you are going to do something, do it sooner than later. It's June 7. I gave the Giants two months. They aren't terrible, but they aren't a contender. Given their age, it's time to cash in some trade chips for even more prospects.

He would never say it, but given how sharp Zaidi is, it is hard for me to believe the Giants are much worse than he anticipated. Frankly, I think Zaidi signed Rodon and Pedersen knowing they could be valuable trade chips more than he thought they could help the Giants come close to repeating 2021.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Giants - 06-07-2022

I would not be surprised to see SF give Pederson an extension and I’m hoping Rodon agrees to return in ‘23.

I expect that SF will be a buyer at the trading deadline.  They are in good position to be in the mix for a wildcard spot, especially since the backside of the schedule is much more friendly - no games in the Eastern Time Zone after June 23rd (ex. a two gamer in Detroit).

We shall see…..

Hey, Giants- we agree!  All I ever ask is to be playing meaningful games in Sept.

I do disagree a little on one comment. The farm system  was not bereft of talent.  It did, however, lack depth.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Mick - 06-07-2022

Fun facts re: Giants.

The 2010 and 2012 teams had the same record as the 2022 team after 53 games -- 29-24.  The 2014 team was five wins better at 34-19.  So...I'm not concerned yet.

The 2022 Giants have scored the third most runs per game in the NL.  Their WHIP and ERA are both 10th of 15 teams.  They are dead last in Total Zone Total Fielding Runs Average above average, which combines all defensive metrics into one disastrously comprehensive number for the Giants.  It's funny...they're 7th in most errors and ninth in fewest runs allowed per game.

Could they improve?  Maybe.  The great coaching had better kick in quick, though.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Giants - 06-07-2022

Yeah, they had Bart and Ramos in the system prior to Zaidi’s first season with the organization.  They were ranked 28 out of 30 by MiLB.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - OutsiderFan - 06-08-2022

All it took was the next game after I made the post about it, to drive home the point about terrible infield defense being the millstone the Giants wear so far in 2022. Andrew Baggarly wrote about it after last night's loss.

And Luciano, Matos and Pomares. You forgot them.  Three of their top 6 prospects.

They had process and people in place to begin rebuilding.  And we’re beginning to do so.  Something Zaidi commented on.  And yeah, Sabeans regime was awful.  They only won three WS.  Compared to …….  Zero for every other front office.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - lex24 - 06-08-2022

Kapler is in a “managers slump”. Bullpen moves backfiring. It happens to all of them at some point.  Doesn’t help when your bullpen ERA since May 1 is over 6.  More than a run higher than any other in baseball.

I did disagree, prior to the AB with him bringing in Alvarez to face Blackmon with 2nd and 3d one out.  Would have left Littell in, walked Blackmon and set up the DP for Diaz. No where near the hitter Blackmon is.
