The wisdom of crowds - Redrum - 06-24-2014
There are optimal situations where it works and many where it doesn't. I think the less optimal situations are where crowd participants are actively watching, assimilating and then publishing/talking about the decisions of
others who are, in turn, watching
us and others. Unfortunately, college fan sites, the "industry" built around them and, frankly, WE are exceedingly skewed to this type of crowd decision making. We take star ratings, rankings, public knowledge scholarship offers and boil them in a sea of opinion of people just like us.Â
That's why -- if Shaw picks Keller Chryst over, say Ricky Town or Josh Rosen-- I switch off on a lot of this. All the Oklahoma fans, Bama fans, Oregon fans, Stanford fans, Boise St. fans ... in the world are probably not near as experienced, or in possession of the important data, to be "smarter" no matter how many of them chime in.
Not OUR class of 2015, but affects us - Redrum - 07-01-2014
QB Travis Waller, a 4-star #8 Nationally (Scout) won't be in our class of 2015, but he
will be in our stadium as part of the Oregon Ducks' class of '15, . Waller might not be Marriota, but he's from the same mold of a dual-threat runner/passer. We might have faced him in any case, supposedly his other finalist was Notre Dame.
Other people besides the Oregon staff and that madman in South Bend thought well of him. He had offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Northwestern, Penn St., Cal, Arizona, Utah, UW and Colorado

What's going on with Sam Darnold? Could Stanford offer him?
Re: Class of 2015 -

OG Nick Wilson from Georgia will be announcing his commitment July 4th at 3 PM EST.
Isn't Nick Wilson from Alpharetta, Georgia? - Redrum - 07-01-2014
Has an offer from Florida. Are we talking about the same guy?

Is the lack of a Darnold offer, who has offers from Oregon and USC, an indication that Stanford feels it might actually land Wimbush who is the only QB offeree other than Town?
Darnold attended the same camp as Wimbush and only Wimbush has an offer. Or might grades/classes be more of an issue for Darnold?

Here's Drukarev from the chat on Sunday: "If Brandon [Wimbush] gets into school I like Stanford's chances. Hope that answers your question."

A few more things to add on to WiM's posts. His cousin is Brandon Simmons and we offered his teammate and good friend of his, Jordan Fox, who wowed everyone at the Stanford camp last month. Jordan has a brother on the Harvard wrestling team so chances of him valuing the elite academics and athletics that Stanford offers is pretty high.
Does he like the coaches? Check.
Does he like Stanford? Check. Also, Mom has always been very high on Stanford even if she is a PSU graduate.
Feeling comfortable at Stanford or on the team? Check. Cousin and possibly high school buddy on the roster cover this concern.
Chance of playing time? Uncertain, but that will happen wherever he ultimately attends. He is a dual-threat QB which is different from Keller Chryst or 2016 targets Jacob Eason and KJ Costello who are definitely more pocket passer types. I do not think we will offer another 2015 QB. More than likely we will go after one of our 2016 targets after Friday Night Lights in late July.
Academics? Seems like a bright kid, but TBD. If he has AP classes on his class schedule once schools begins, we'll know if he is seriously considering Stanford. A decommitment from PSU would be a Stanford lock, but I do not think he will do that unless he is certain that he will be admitted which will be early 2015.

Seems like we usually win in a recruiting battle against a parent's alma mater. What usually is an advantage for State U turns into a disadvantage when Stanford comes into play.
BTW did Milburn's stepfather go to Oklahoma? I couldn't uncover from a Google search.

In the least shocking commitment in a while, Nick Wilson has committed:
https://twitter.com/StanfordRivals/status/485136478565982209
Wilson's a four-star to ESPN and Rivals, and a three-star to 247 and Scout. He has an excellent offer list, with Auburn, Florida State, Michigan State AND MORE interested.

Here is a great scouting profile of the newest member of the tunnel workers union. He fits perfectly!

Now the coaches need to close the deal on some QBs and RBs for Wilson, et. al., to block for. Stanford only has 2 QBs (Burns, Chryst) and 3 RBs (Sanders, McCaffrey, Brandt-Sims) on the roster who will have eligibility after this season.Â

I believe that Wright has two more seasons of eligibility, including the coming season. Kelsey Young, too.

Hogan and Crower are both RS Jrs, as are Wright and Young. The Stanford website lists them as
academic (rising) seniors. So depth isn't a brobdingnagian worry at either position.

And a significant academic step was taken!
Quote:Wimbush previously spoke about the academic intrigue of Stanford and after adding that scholarship offer last month he mentioned the possibility of taking a few Advanced Placement courses to make sure he'd hit the strict entrance requirements. While Wimbush said he is enrolled in two AP classes, he said he was planning on taking them before the Stanford trip happened.

On Lombardi's interview with WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside...
Has he visited or will he visit over Summer? He says he will commit before school starts, but seems unlikely someone would commit to a school without visiting. JJAW looks a bit underrated based on his video because his offer list suggest college coaches like him a lot. A WR class of him, Irwin and St. Brown would be pretty incredible for Stanford, IMO.

He has stated he will be on campus for Saturday Night Lights, July 26th. That day is shaping up to be loaded with talent.

Then I like Stanford's chances to get his verbal commitment at the camp or shortly thereafter.
