Wake me when Wimbush signs up for two AP classes his Senior year.  If he does that, he's a serious Stanford recruit.  If not, he's just taken the opportunity to learn from some good coaches, compete against some of his peers, take in a great college campus and visit the S.F. Bay Area.

Apparently the painting was worth a few hundred thousand when the painter's identity was in dispute.  Send it to a Rembrandt "expert" who "determines" it was painted by Rembrandt... and suddenly it is worth $50 M.  That's what is so messed up about the art world.  It is the same friggin piece.  The art did not change one bit (other than the varnish that was removed).  If it was a second rate piece before, it was a second rate piece after being found to be a Rembrandt.  If it was always a great piece, then it should have always been priced accordingly.

WR Recruiting: Time to panic? - OutsiderFan - 06-24-2014

A few months ago it seemed Stanford would land at least one of the elite WRs among Kirk, Irwin, and St. Brown, and was in the mix for Brandon Polk and CJ Sanders.  Today, the latter have verballed elsewhere, and the recruiting punditocracy predicts the former to follow suit.

Per the latest Drukarev story on lightly recruited Brandon Singleton, Stanford plans on taking three WRs in 2015.  I don't follow it that closely, but my sense is WR recruiting is starting to look bleak, so am wondering if others have some more positive insights?

I think we are in great position for St. Brown. His mom is solidly in Stanford's corner and will probably stay in California. This seems more like a battle with USC. What have you read or heard?

Irwin will select Stanford if he is admitted. The concern here is admission and academic performance - I think Hulk was on this a while go. He says he has a top five but I have a feeling this is a plan A=Stanford with plan B=ASU if not admitted.

Kirk seems to be the long shot among the three, so the offers being sent out to other 2015 WRs is probably to fill an open third slot.

247 pundits were unanimous on Chaffin going to NC State before he chose Stanford; last year there was a LB who they all predicted, 100 percent for Stanford who chose Texas (I think). I think two things happen with 247 predictions (in addition to group think): first, if a guy expresses an interest in a program but doesn't commit the pundits all start to gravitate toward the last school he visited, assuming that he wants to give them the last shot because he favors them; also, they will assume that friendships will pull a player one place or another.  Maybe that would be true when two departments are similar in other ways (i.e., academics, location)...but there is really no comparison between ASU and Stanford in academics, and if Irwin really values academics and gets accepted at Stanford, he will be here. 

I'm always encouraged when players are offered by other schools but hold off on committing.  Why hold off on Notre Dame, or ASU unless you are at least considering other places? (especially ND which still has cache among prospects).  I'm not predicting anything, but Jashon Cornell is another similar situation...he has been linked to Alabama, now Ohio State, I think Michigan State earlier...but he keeps holding out and said at one point he would take a west coast trip that would include Stanford.  Likely he is at least thinking of other places, otherwise why not just commit to a major power if that is what you want?

In theory the Crystal Ball should produce reasonably accurate predictions -- wisdom of crowds and all that -- but in practice, even with the ability to change predictions, they don't seem to do very well. Here's yet another instance: http://247sports.com/Player/Alex-Ofodile-30588

I have seen a few detailed studies on the purported wisdom of crowds. From what I remember, there is some evidence of increased accuracy if the topic is one in which most everyone has some reasonable information but nobody has substantially better info than average. The concept is apparently quite fallacious if the topic involves specialized information.

Where predicting which schools recruits will pick falls is unclear to me. In some cases it seems the pundits don't have much in the way of particular information - relying upon general concepts like geographic proximity, which are the more powerful programs, their own preferences, or pull something out of ... nowhere. In some cases there does seem to be particular information, perhaps the kids or those who really know them (parents, sometimes coaches) have made statements that make their intentions fairly clear.

There may also be an extra-Stanford effect. A certain set of kids keep their interest in Stanford under wraps until they know if it actually will be an option for them (i.e. gain acceptance). This is such a rare situation in the world of college football I think many pundits simply cannot process the idea.
