Based on Melvin’s comments today, it is possible that Slater may start the season on the IL with Matos taking his place on the roster.  If so, Matos would platoon with Yaz in RF.

And if Matos rakes, Slater’s S.F. days could be over.  The injuries just pile up.  Too bad.  Hes a good player.  Has to be frustrating for him.

If Slater had enough career stolen base attempts (minimum is 80, he has 51), he would rank second all-time for stolen base percentage at 88.2%. Leader is Byron Buxton at 89.6%

They went out and got Murphy cause they don’t believe Bart is a decent backup.

Well, last year Murphy threw out one runner in 28 stolen base attempts, and if you've seen him throw this spring, you'd think there is something very physically wrong with his arm. Doesn't even include the fact that Bart is hitting .385 and Murphy is hitting .233. or that Bart's OBP is .500 and Murphy's is .296.

Giants have 18 errors in 23 preseason games. Hopefully they will settle down in the regular season.

Incidentally, Giants are 11-10-2 after starting the season 0-4-2. Of the 15 teams in the Cactus League, the Giants are in 5th place.

The Giants knew Murphy’s percentage of throwing runners out before they went and signed him.  

Spring training numbers are meaningless in this instance  (in fact in most instances). Unless Bailey or Murphy get hurt, Bart is I think gone. There’s no question about that. The only way he stays is if the Giants designate him for assignment  no team picks him up.  But I doubt that will happen.

Murphy went 3 for 3 today with a home run, his line is now .316/.400/.500/.900. I say who cares about a few stolen bases?

Murphy has terrific lifetime numbers vs. lefthanded pitching.  Not so great vs RH.  He’s going to play primarily against lefties - as Bailey's weaker hitting side throughout his minor league years was RH. Although, last year he hit much better off lefties.

Watching the A's vs. Giants, through the first five innings. Murphy has hit two home runs, Flores hit another. But the story of the game is Jordan Hicks. I realize that he's a reliever, and a project, and a lot of people have pooh-poohed the Hicks-as-starter experiment. But MAN, that guy can pitch. In five innings, Hicks has 10 strikeouts, nine of them swinging, and the hardest hit ball that the A's had in five innings was a comebacker to the mound (by JD Davis, no less).

Giants won, they are 16-11-2, good for 2nd place among the 15 Cactus League teams. They're 8-2 in the last 10.

Of course, as Duane Kiper said during the telecast after Murphy hit his second HR….

(Paraphrasing)  After Rich Aurilla hit 6 HRs one spring, he felt miserable - you don’t want to do too good in the Cactus League because you might not be able to replicate it once you start the season.  

Having said that, Hicks was mixing his fastball and off-speed pitches beautifully.  If he can go six regularly with that stuff, he will be a solid addition to the starting staff.

Baggerly weighed in on this topic this morning.  In essence, the Opening Day roster may not reflect what the longer term plans are for SF due to having to make adjustments to the 40 man roster, waiver rules,  Yaz’s impending paternity leave and Joey Bart’s situation. Loupp, Black, Bart, Luciano, Matos, Miller, Sanchez are guys he mentioned as still in play for varying reasons for the short term and long term.

Yeah, simply not the same thing these days to be on the opening day roster. Heck, remember, Matt Beaty?  There will be a lot of maneuvering for at least the first couple of weeks until hopefully they get something a little more set. The real issue is how to deal with the 40 man roster. Because there’s more permanence in those moves.

I won't make a prediction for this season. I made one long ago before SFG added a number of highly-prized, valuable free agents. Instead, I'll just share what I hope can happen, within the bounds of reasonable expectations.

Lee becomes a first-rate leadoff hitter in the .375 OBP range with 100 runs scored, and is a just-shy-of-gold-glove outfielder. Chapman and Ahmed between them play gold-glove worthy left-side defense and between them score 150 runs and hit .250/.750 OPS. Ahmed would have to have a resurgent batting year, wins Comeback PoY. Estrada doesn't get hurt and plays the offense/defense he did in the first half last year. Wade/Flores hit 35 HRs between them at an .850 OPS pace. Bailey is strong enough to hold up, is a candidate for gold glove, and between him and Murphy hit .750 OPS. Yaz, Conforto and Matos hit 50 home runs between them at an .850+ OPS clip. Soler hits 31 HRs. Slater returns to form, Fitz does a great utility job.

Snell, Webb, Hicks are all Cy Young candidates, Harrison becomes RoY, Cobb wins 15, Ray goes 8-2 in his starts. Doval isn't needed as much and finishes 4th in saves, pitching 20 fewer games. Staff ERA is sub-3.00, staff WHIP is sub-1.25. Defense is top five in MLB. Melvin proves last year's Padres disappointment and last year's Giants meltdowns are things of the past. No major injuries.

Half a dozen to a dozen minor leaguers are ready to make the big jump to the big club. Beck, Miller and Slater all do great, and Stanford becomes the primary feeder school to SF Giants.

Giants win 95 games, finish first in the division, win the NLDS, NLCS and WS.

I'm tempted to say 107 wins, but we all know that won't happen. Still, the lineup's pretty strong. So I'll go with 92 wins. (Lex, our wager is still on...I won't back out).

Giants spent or took on an additional $394 million in free agents, a necessity given the 30th ranked farm system.

Today, Darvish vs. Webb, 1:05 first pitch. Lineup should look something like this:

1. Jung Hoo Lee, CF
2. Jorge Soler, DH
3. LaMonte Wade Jr., 1B
4. Matt Chapman, 3B
5. Michael Conforto, LF, will be the 18th consecutive Opening Day with a new left fielder, and given that his contract is up this year, next year will be Matos, most likely.

The Giants still list 27 players on their active roster. I'm assuming Joey Bart will get the negative news some time later today.

Per mlb.com, 12 pitchers and 14 non-pitchers.  Bart made the 26 man roster.  The only non-40 guys to make the 26 were Ahmed and Roupp.  Cooper Hummel was designated and Ethan Small was placed on the 60 day IL.

Baggerly suggested the strategy is keep Bart until they need a 13th pitcher.  By that time, rosters for all the other teams will be set and they might be able to get him through waivers and send him to Sacramento. 

That would open a spot for a non-roster guy like Jeffries.

Dang!  We've become an optimistic bunch suddenly.

I'm thinking 87-75 so put me down for 87.  The starting line-up looks adequate but the offense will go flat once we lose some of the everyday players to injury which tempers my enthusiasm.  Hope you optimistic types are right though.

Maybe I'd better amend my 96 win projection. They've already lost one. I recall watching Luke Jackson in a couple of his first games last season and he was unhittable. Then he was injured, and then he was injured again, and then... So, he comes in today ahead 3-2, I think, and misses the plate biggly. A hit or two follow, and then he's injured. So far, he's been pretty much an empty uniform with a nice salary. Conforto with a nice game, though, and Webb was good enuf to win.

Conforto (3/4, HR & double) and Ahmed (2/3, 2 RBIs) were pleasant surprises. Late Night LaMonte had one hit in two trips. Bailey didn't get a great start on his pursuit of a gold glove, given that he had the only error of the game. Lee had a nice hit to get on, then got picked off first. Jackson...faced three batters, gave up two hits and a walk and all three eventually scored. I don't know that he'll ever return. Stanford's very own Erik Miller pitched a scoreless inning and has a 0.00 WHIP...that was nice.
