Unfortunately, or shortstop didn't hold on to a terrific throw by our catcher and some runs scored. He also had a chance with the bat to make a difference and didn't.

Pitching is a bigger problem than shortstop IMO.  Can't hold a 3 run lead in the late innings?  I think we have to be able to do that to make a run at the CWS.  We won't score double digit runs every game.

*Can't hold that lead without using top relievers.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - CTcard - 05-26-2023

Last night's game was very disappointing in the moment, not all that disappointing the next morning.

I would have rather played SC this round. Arizona is playing very good ball now, and I think a much more dangerous team than SC despite finishing tied for 8th in the conference. They have won 5 of their last 6 averaging 12.5 runs over that stretch. And Arizona is scraping for an NCAA tournament invite which SC has wrapped up.

Despite the pitching collapse at the end, I feel more let down by the offense - though that is largely a matter of expectations. No runs after the second inning is tough, highlighted by 14 left on base (and sort of 16 as there were two inning ending double plays). And what is with their pitcher Mercado? It seems Stanford cannot hit the guy, but everyone else can. In two games versus Stanford he's gone 13.1 innings giving up 1 run - and ERA of 0.67. Against everybody else he's got an ERA around 8 and goes less than 4 innings per start.

Of course the highlight was the performance of Dugan. He pitched really well. His longest outing of the year (6.0 innings), NO WALKS, and only 2 runs. While he gave up 7 hits, as far as I can remember none were hit hard (and some aided by shaky defense). If he actually has figured something out and this isn't just a one-off, that's great news.
Uber also pitched okay for coming back from an injury. He did fall into a bit of the pattern that has hurt the back-end of the pitching staff. Started off great (retired 5 of the first 6 batters he faced), then suddenly go in trouble. Hope that is a sign of progress.

Apparently we are going to face Zastrow as the Arizona pitcher tonight. He pitched 1.2 innings (44 pitches) in relief on Tuesday vs ASU and struggled a bit (5 hits, 2 runs). A couple of weeks ago he pitched fairly well against us - 5.0 innings, 8 hits, 4 runs.

Who would we rather play in the finals assuming we win today?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 05-26-2023

Oregon's on a roll.

Yeah, Cobb’s defense is really poor.

Awful game against AZ so far.  Quinn has more than 50 pitches by the 2nd inning and no one out.  We can't field and can't pitch.  Quinn seems to be letting his lack of support get to him.  AZ is beating on him like a drum.  It is going to take another football score to win this one.

The only way this team goes deep is to outslug everyone which I don't see happening against multiple top arms.

To compound the misery, if you hit the live stats link at gostanford.com, it takes you to live stats for the Oregon game last night.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 05-26-2023

Well, that was embarrassing. Many mistakes by many, including the shortstop. I would be ok trading the bat with a more reliable fielder.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Sam Leopold - 05-26-2023

Well...... this game was a dizastrow

6-8 is a nicer loss than 4-14...yikes.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - TonyLima - 05-26-2023

Why was the game called after 7? gostanford.com seems to be broken tonight.

Edit: Never mind, figured it out.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - MiniBlueHawkCard - 05-26-2023

Getting run ruled is never a good thing, and as I stated a few days ago 1-2 this week has me worried about a top 8 seed. However, it is worth noting the last two national champions went winless in their conference tournaments (including Mississippi State who got run ruled TWICE and still got to host Stanford in a super regional). Here's to hoping this was a bit of a wake up call and a chance to get some extra rest.

I am not sure what all of you are worried about. You could be Cal and get 2 and a Q after battling for the ninth spot in this tournament. Stanford is going to host a regional and most likely will host a super. This team is probably tired and an the exit is probably a blessing in disguise. Yes it would have been good to win the Pac tourney again. The scores of these games have been outrageous. No pitching is safe when the ball flies in AZ. I see why AZ is the place to go due to the weather. Maybe look at another location where the longball is not going to play that big of a role.

But… But… But… Four home runs in three innings.

Santa Clara announcer just said, “Here comes Rusty Filter.“ For just a minute I had a flashback.

Wait till the team meets 2 aces in a row in regionals.  Would love them to replicate coastal carolina's run however

It'll be interesting if Stanford meets SCU in the regionals...

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - cardfan77 - 05-28-2023

It’s almost guaranteed that the selection committee will put SCU in Stanford’s regional. I will be shocked if Santa Clara goes somewhere else
