I drive through Campus pretty regularly, so I have seen a cross-section of conditions. The traffic circles work perfectly when there are no pedestrians and fairly light traffic. They are in those conditions a significant improvement over stop signs, as you usually don't even need to slow down, let alone stop. Since this is a common situation, it is a big plus.

As traffic density increases the probability of having to wait to enter the traffic circle increases. This leads to a somewhat chaotic situation which is greatly exacerbated by the fact most drivers don't really know how roundabouts are supposed to work and don't enter the roundabout when they easily could and also people in the roundabout stopping for "cross traffic" because they think they are supposed to do so. At this point, the roundabout becomes equal to the old stop signs (at best). If people could actually use them correctly, they would perhaps be better that the old system, but given that you can't rely on that, they aren't.

When there are pedestrians present, even not many pedestrians, things often go sideways. If the "popular" exit for the roundabout is blocked by a pedestrian, the whole roundabout can back up and nobody can proceed. With stop signs, only one direction is affected. Thus the OPs "gridlock" comment. Given that this is a known problem with roundabouts, it surprises me that Stanford adopted them so universally in places where there are LOTS of pedestrians.

IMO the roundabout at Campus Dr. and Santa Teresa St is a definite improvement over a stop sign. Campus Dr. and Bowdoin is (most of the time) also pretty good. The others IMO are not obviously a benefit and are sometimes much worse than stop signs.

Even if FRANCIS injury is merely a sprain, it would take AT LEAST 3 to 4 weeks
before she can come back, right?  And Stanford is @ #7 WSU next weekend
and @ #6 Oregon the weekend of Oct 20-22. Oh well....

Is Francis' injury in the knee or ankle?  The way they took her off the court it looked more like her ankle but I don't know.

Also, what is the status of Smith? Having Smith available would be helpful.

If Francis is out for some time, would love to see Harvey spend some time at middle.  If the primary goal is blocking she should be extremely quick laterally.

Thanks for posting that.   I was thinking exactly the same thing.  If the choice is Harvey or Malia Tufuga, IMO Harvey is more athletic, jumps higher, and is quicker.  The downside is it takes time to learn the footwork and decision-making strategy of the MB position, but Harvey may be the best choice if Francis is out for more than a couple weeks.

I suspect Hambly had plans for Harvey to play OPP next season so he is open to a player learning a new position.

FWIW, if it turns out Francis is out for the season, the NC dream is over for 2023.

Francis's injury is to the ankle (99% sure).  According to another VT post, she landed on an ASU player's foot.

Annabelle Smith was not even on the bench last night, though she was present on the floor after the match.  I'm not sure if we will see her back on the court.

Thanks Goose, your impressions mirror mine.

OK, stupid question.  Why is no one mentioning McKenna Vicini?  I've been quite impressed with her the last couple of years.  Is she out too?  Or is this a rotational thing and you need two middle blockers?

Yes, you need two.  When Vicini rotates to the back row, Oglivie (the librero) takes her place, and the other MB (e.g., Francis) comes into the front row.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - M T - 09-30-2023

Circling back to the traffic circles.  I remember a experiment on Myth Busters that showed the circles had more throughput than stop signs for cars.

HOWEVER, they didn't look at some safety issues I experience as a driver.

Among the differences between a 4-way stop and a traffic circle
   A.  The crosswalk is 20 feet from the traffic circle.  This is fine, unless traffic is backed up beyond the crosswalk.  Then it basically becomes another intersection.   All it takes is to be the 2nd car waiting to get into the circle.
   B. The traffic circle situation is more like sitting at a stop sign wanting to cross a busy one-way street where the cross-traffic doesn't stop.  And cross traffic wanting to turn right don't signal.
   C.  In congestion, a driver wanting to enter the circle can not tell when he can go until a car in the circle exits the circle to go the opposite direction as he is going.  This doesn't leave much time to react to get into the circle before the next car comes around.  That makes for rushed decisions.

Issues:
1.  A pedestrian may enter into the crosswalk from the right when the driver is focused on the left.

I encountered this when traffic was congested entering the circle due to traffic leaving the parking lot across from Maples after a game.   I'm headed southbound on Campus Drive at Jane Stanford/Serra. A car is stopped in front of me, waiting to enter the circle.  I'm waiting behind him, with maybe my bumper into the crosswalk.  No pedestrians in sight. I'm watching the traffic in the circle, watching for cars to peel out of the circle headed in the opposite direction I am headed.  One does, and the car in front of me goes.  I start to pull forward, but 120 degrees from where I've been looking, pedestrians enter the crosswalk from my right.    Yes, the driver should reassess what used to be clear is still clear just like at a stop sign when you want to cross a one-way street;  Yes, the pedestrian should be able to see the driver isn't looking in their way.

2.  People (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc) in or approaching the crosswalk are backlight by the street lights, from the point of view of a driver approaching the traffic circle.  In the evening,  the pedestrians are not well lit from the point of view of the approaching drivers.  But there are lots of moving lights to  catch your attention elsewhere.

At the 3 circles on Campus Drive, for entering each from any of 4 directions, the street lights are above and behind the pedestrians on the driver's left and right.   Why not set up lights so pedestrians are illuminated from the front as viewed by the driver approaching the crosswalk and circle?

3.  A bicyclist coming down the pathway and then straight out into the walkway at 15 to 20mph can seem to appear out of nowhere.   A bicyclist going 15 MPH is halfway across the street (to middle of the median) in about 2 seconds, just 1 second from running into you (or vice versa).  Just 2 seconds before that, he was 100 feet away from the driver, on a pathway.   Spotting the approaching bicyclist is aggravated by the lighting at night.

(What bicyclist on the path headed to the crosswalk would voluntarily turn 90 degrees to get onto the street parallel to his path, just so they could get into the traffic circle and cross with traffic?  Nope, they'll go straight through the crosswalk with the pedestrians.)

I would suggest at least two remediations.
Until traffic circles are common in the US, I expect a college campus will have a large percentage of drivers (students, parents, visiting opponents & their fans) that are not used to them, increasing the chance of accidents year after year.  If these were traffic circles in residential Mountain View, most drivers would be used to them after the first year.

Traffic circles also have an obvious Denial of Service vulnerability.  If I were a rival, I'd exploit that on game day.  Campus security would need to be on hand to stop it.

leftcoast - Leftcoast - 10-01-2023

Agreed that roundabouts are great for light and medium traffic but very bad for heavy traffic conditions.  In the UK and Ireland you sometimes see traffic lights gating entry INTO a traffic circle in heavy traffic multi-lane cases - truly the worst of both worlds.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-01-2023

Stanford vs Arizona today 1:00pm at Maples.  Arizona is 0-3 in conference including a loss to Cal.  Stanford will be missing a key ingredient to its starting lineup.  Who will prevail?

Will Tufuga play MB for the entire match?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 10-01-2023

Yes in Tufuga

Recruits hear Cawa Yu Mullin and unknown.
Guessing Parks

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - TonyLima - 10-01-2023

Sami on the bench with an air cast. Best news we could hope for. Source: kzsu. Also Vicini expected to take major role at MB. Same source.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-01-2023

Announcer on live stream said Francis "a little banged up".  I don't if we will get any more than that from the announcer.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 10-01-2023

Tufuga. Holding her own
Disappointing crowd for recruiting

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-01-2023

Stanford managed to get through set one without Francis.  Rubin in a zone; can she stay in that zone for set two? I expect Arizona to do better the second set.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 10-01-2023

Sadly Annabelle Smith won’t be playing again

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - 76lsjumb - 10-01-2023

Geez. Tough crowd here. 3 downer posts in a row. After Kipp just served 3 aces in a row !

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 10-01-2023

I'll make it 4. Wish Baird would quit tipping

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-01-2023

Oh no.  Miner injured? Ok, back in match after ankle re-taped.
