I agree that we really need more three point shooting to accompany Jump. We will see who can step up.
The biggest question for me is whether any of our incoming frosh can play defense from the start, or if they are going to take a while to develop.

Yes, more firepower, but in addition to 3-point shooting. Someone who can create and score in different positions on the court. I'm hoping Demetre returns to her freshman performance when she positioned herself inside the 3-point line and scored with beautiful mid-range jumpers. 3 reliable scoring threats is critical. Defense is a must. Can anyone remember the last season we consistently made the other team uncomfortable when they had the ball?

Yes, that turnaround mid-range jumper by DEMETRE is simply a thing of beauty, and her release point is pretty high. I actually want her to take more of that, because she will be forced to play inside, with BRINK and IRIAFEN as Stanford's only proven post players. Positioning her at the high post with BRINK or IRIAFEN at the low post.
RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season -

Iriafen only averaged 12 minutes last year, splitting time with Belibi and Betts, so I think we can expect that number to go way up if she performs well.
Do folks remember that Iriafen spent last summer practicing her mid range jumper, and when she started last year--in the open practice and exhibition games--she was hitting it consistently? Then, for some reason, we almost never saw it again during the rest of the year.
She is athletic enough to put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket. If she can also hit mid range jumpers she will have the versatility to be a much more well-rounded threat.
But probably the biggest key for Iriafen to become more of a mainstay is rebounding. It is hard to compare her rebounding numbers given her limited minutes last year, but Jones was our rebounding machine and someone needs to take up that slack. In general, I agree that Jones was not always as great an asset--particularly when playing out of position--as we had come to expect, and that she actually complicated the lineup. But folks need to keep in mind that she was our leading defensive rebounder and second leading scorer, and those things need to come from someone else this year.

Yes, depth is the issue at the post. Demetre and iriafen are definitely the keys this year. I actually think Demetre is ideally a big 3 -- I know she's 6-3 but seems somewhat undersized at the 4 down low. It will be interesting to see how she's developed over the off season.

Depressing our rankings are our ignominious defeat in the tournament last spring, the graduation of Jones, and the shocking transfers out. You can hardly blame people for being skeptical of us.
Helping us is Brink's return, a solid entering freshman class, and everyone's faith in Tara. Without those three factors we might not be ranked at all.
The three teams in our league that are ranked more highly than us, we play only once each, and two of them we play on the road in the most difficult of road trips. This is going to be a challenging season.

I don't think the duo puts us in the top 10. Brink, yes, however, Jump, as deadly a shot as she is, can be easily guarded by an average athletic guard. Jump needs room to get her shot off, and I don't think she's shown that she is capable of creating it on her own.
Defenses were effective against us by basically clogging the paint and having someone follow Jump around. We will need someone to develop into a slasher and others to develop a consistent mid-range to long-range shot for us to be a top 10 team.

Betts had an outstanding tournament and was the best player for the Silver Medal USA Team competing against far more experienced opponents, particularly Gold Medalist Brazil (Team USA lost to Brazil twice).
I didn't see any Americup games, but I viewed that 2nd place finish as a damning result for the players on the US roster. The US women had won the Americup every time they played it except for a single narrow loss in 1997. (The Haley Jones-lead team 2 years ago easily beat all comers, including Brazil.) But Betts stats were indeed decent.
I was more impressed with the fact Talana Lepolo helped Team USA's U19 team win a gold medal in the FIBA World Cup in Spain this past July. She averaged 17.7 minutes, 3.1 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Her assists average was 2nd most on the US team, behind only Hannah Hidalgo, who is the top point guard recruit in the 2023 class. (By comparison Kiki Rice only averaged 2.1 assists in 20 minutes per game). Lepolo also had an impressive semifinal performance against France where she was 2-2 on 3s and had 5 assists (in 18 minutes). She had the highest efficiency per minute of any guard in that game. Pretty encouraging.

And thanks for the transcript OC!
This was I think the most revealing question and answer. See my italics. I wonder if they are using the triangle--spacing the floor, getting it inside to Brink, if she is doubled kicking it back out. And interesting that Tara is more worried about defense right now. She specifically mentions Iriafen hitting the high post shot, which makes me think she has improved her versatility and there will be some high-low action.
Quote:Q.Tara, where are you going to get your outside of Cam and Hannah as reliable scorers for you? Where else is there going to be offense coming from?
TARA ANN VANDERVEER: Well, I don't think we've ever recruited a player, and there's certainly not anyone on our team right now who doesn't think they are a great offensive player. Kiki, hitting the high post shot, she's shooting threes, driving it, attacking the basket. Talana, knocking down shots. She is probably is more of a pass first point guard, but she is not shy. Elena has never met a shot she doesn't like. Pass is a four letter word for her. We have player on top of player that are really, really skilled, and but we've kind of gone back to running some of our older offenses, and the ball is moving. We don't have any sticky hands. And it's really fun to watch the ball movement, the spacing and the coachability of people to say, hey, we're going to get the ball inside to Cam. She's doubled. She's kicking it out. She is passing really well. So I think we have a lot of offense. I'm worried more about the defense.
Hannah's interview:
https://pac-12.com/videos/hannah-jump-press-conference-2023-pac-12-womens-basketball-media-day
Jump looks strong! Oh my goodness. She spent the off season in the weight room and my does she look solid. She mentioned Iriafen as most improved.

Thanks for a link to the transcript, which is a very good read.
All off season I've assumed we would start Cam, Kiki, Hannah, Talana and either Elena or Brook. Two comments from media day makes me think Elena is our fifth starter -- at least for right now.
Tara: What I love about Cam is she's not fouling. So I'm really excited about that. She's aggressive and understands how important she is for our team to be out there. And I think people like Hannah Jump, Talana, Elena, they really space the floor really well.
[that sounds like she just rattled off the starting five]
***
Hannah: I think this year we've got a lot of great outside shooters from Talana to Elena.
[this would have been an appropriate time to mention Brook, but instead she cites Elena]
Two separate data points where you'd expect Brook to get a call out and instead it is just Elena. If Elena turns out to be the starter, I'd be very happy with that, particularly if she continues to hit the boards and be disruptive on defensive. We know she can slash and her outside shot, while not picture perfect, is very effective. A brobdingnagian plus is if her passing and particularly her ability to drive and dish shows significant improvement.

Players mentioned in Tara's interview:
Cameron Brink. had a great summer playing for USA in 3 on 3; impressed with how hard she's playing, how competitive ("super competitive") she is, her passing, her scoring; [in 3x3] she really got excited about shooting that 3 and loved the space (told her she can create her own space by running the floor really hard so she's running the floor hard); she's taking 3s, has great hands, great touch; not fouling, aggressive and understands how important she is for our team to be out there; with
Hannah/Talana/Elena spacing the floor you'll really get to see Cam - should be in the running for player of the year
Hannah Jump. just working hard; always first in the gym, last one to leave; up there with Cam in competitiveness
Talana Lepolo. improved, played USA basketball, shot looks really good, knocking down shots; probably more of a pass 1st point guard, but not shy
Kiki Iriafen. playing some great basketball; hitting the high post shot, shooting threes, driving it, attacking the basket
Elena Bosgana. played for her national team; never met a shot she doesn't like, pass is a four letter word for her
Brooke Demetre. has had a great summer
Chloe Clardy. having a fabulous preseason
Nunu Agara. incredibly coachable, versatile
Courtney Ogden. versatile, shoots the three
All Frosh. 3 freshmen [among others] could "step up for us"; incredibly quick learners, very mature, but still freshmen; counting on our returners to lead the way
About shooters besides Cam/Hannah: Player on top of player are really, really skilled, but we've kind of gone back to running some of our older offenses, and the ball is moving; no sticky hands

I am not one who is overly happy Betts left. But her performance in Americup was pretty outstanding. And while US did get silver, this is the first time they had used college players. It is a senior team tournament, and the past gold medal teams contained predominantly pro players. So, while they got silver, Betts was pretty phenomenal playing against the senior players of other countries.
I also was impressed to some extent with Lepolo over the summer. I did watch the games, and some games she impressed me. Others were so so. However, she and Hidalgo were really the only true point guards. Rice and others are more 2 guards, even if they play point. They try to score, while Lepolo and Hidalgo are more facilitators. However, I do think Lepolo has tremendous upside and I was ecstatic to see her get this experience this summer and truly hope it helps her up her game. I probably liked her last year much more than most on the board, and I hope we see great things from her this year.
Also curious to see Iriafen. For the first week or two last year, I thought she was going to be the break out star. And then she kind of seemed to get timid, and went downhill the rest of the season. But she has the potential to be a superstar. She needs to build her confidence though. I hope this is her year. She can be great.

2021 Americup Rosters. Granted, that 2021 team was a pretty incredible college roster.
And I was very sad to see Betts go. She has incredible upside and I think she would have done great things in Tara's program. I'm just cautious about reading too much into this summer's Americup stats.
