Because their guy going tonight has a sub 4 ERA (and apparently their other guy available has been solid), I assumed they had a couple guys behind their two studs who could be trouble. I don't think Stanford has a third - and obviously a fourth - starter that I would put any trust into. Then again, to your point, their team has been giving up runs so hopefully we can put up a ton ourselves as we'll certainly need them.

Some of Oregon's pitching woes are associated with their better ERA guys apparently not being able to go very many innings, though some of that could be in comparison to Stanford and a reflection that Esquer tends to have a slow hook.

The guy I am imagining might start tonight has a sub 4 ERA, but he also has rarely gone very long in a game. His longest outing was his most recent, 6 innings vs. last place Utah. Other than that, he's never gone more than 4 innings and his other recent efforts were 2+.
The guy I think is second most likely to start (Spoljaric) also had a good, long outing vs Utah but has been up and down with an ERA of 5.63.
Both have been good at times - which also goes for much of Stanford's staff.
Both these guys are frosh from Canada - so I'm inclined to cheer for them when they are not playing Stanford.

I have a slightly different take on the importance of tonight's game. The sneaky value in winning today is it locks in a winning weekend. Does that matter? Hopefully not. It shouldn't matter what Stanford does the rest of the way in terms of getting a top 8 seed but I would be nervous with a 1-2 week. I do not want to think about the RPI with two more losses but that would be a big topic of conversation on the selection show. A win today (or tomorrow) removes that possibility. I bring this up to suggest that saving the best arms for the semis is not necessarily the approach I would take. If Stanford has a slim lead I would not be upset to see Bruno out there.

I too bet Bruno will come in if Stanford has a slim lead heading into the 9th. We could get some Pancer tonight as well. What I don't think we'll see is any Matthews, Dixon or, most likely, Dowd as he pitch a few innings last night.

Uber on the bump, Cobb at SS got their speedy lead off hitter out, and Graham already went yard. 4-0 already after 1.

Owen Cobb at SS can be frustrating at times but good producer as the 9th hitter.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 05-25-2023

Hmm. Did we face this pitcher in our series with the Ducks? I seem to remember a game where we made a lot of contact, but everything got gobbled up by the defense. Kind of like now.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - M T - 05-25-2023

Hmm...  I'm torn.  The way to keep USC from advancing to the semis is for Stanford to lose.   Stanford moves on whether they win or lose.  Why do they do this to us?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 05-25-2023

That strike 2 call against Troy was atrocious. Probably a foot off the plate. Completely changed the complexion of that inning as Troy was in his head and chased strike 3.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 05-25-2023

Grrr!

These Ducks are intolerable. Easy decision for me. We can personally send the Trojans packing tomorrow if we finish the job tonight.

I am much more invested in the outcome of this game than I was 24 hours ago!

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 05-25-2023

Again we have runners in scoring position, but we can't bring them home. 12 runners LOB.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - cardfan77 - 05-25-2023

I want to see the Ducks packing tonight and then the Trojans packing tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - TonyLima - 05-25-2023

How many times do we have to watch that Ceballos (sp) hr?

Well, at least the SC weenies are out.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 05-25-2023

$%&#@!

Well, I guess I have my answer. We couldn't adjust to the Oregon pitchers. So frustrating. That Mercado kid pitched 4 plus innings of shutout ball while giving up only one hit, yet he had ZERO strikeouts(!)

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - M T - 05-25-2023

IMO, I'd rather USC go home while Stanford plays the 12-18 (conf) Arizona than to take a bit bigger risk with 17-13 (conf) USC.
Stanford was 2-1 against Arizona and 1-2 against USC.

Yeah, the loss lowers our RPI...

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Sam Leopold - 05-25-2023

well..... Duck me

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 05-26-2023

Our weak link remains shortstop (and reliable pitching).

Unfortunately, or shortstop didn't hold on to a terrific throw by our catcher and some runs scored. He also had a chance with the bat to make a difference and didn't.

Pitching is a bigger problem than shortstop IMO.  Can't hold a 3 run lead in the late innings?  I think we have to be able to do that to make a run at the CWS.  We won't score double digit runs every game.

In general, I agree that reliable pitching is a concern but I won't pin last night's loss on the pitching. Dugan pitched the game of his life and it was clear that Esquer wasn't going to touch his top arms out of the bullpen (unless you put Pancer in this category).

I also don't understand the disappointment in Cobb. This is a senior who barely saw the field prior to this season and nothing was expected from. All he's done is slash .328/.373/.484. I'll grant that the errors have been a weak spot.

As I mentioned in another post, the guy who we need to get going is Bowser. Unlike Cobb, Bowser was a Preseason All-American who was supposed to be a cog in the middle of the lineup. Through last night, he's slashed .276/.339/.507. His production is down across the board from last year.

It's gotten to the point where I wonder if Esquer isn't considering giving Bowser a day off to clear his head. I know he had two hits against the Bears but I believe one was an Arizona chopper where he pounded the ball into the dirt in front of home plate and beat it out. He's just not making solid contact. Worst of all, I may not be a sports therapist but his struggles at the plate seem to be affecting his play in the field. He had an error on Wednesday night and again last night. The problem with the throw he sailed in the 9th wasn't so much the throw itself as it was the decision to make the throw in the first place. He had no chance to throw out the runner but it looked like he was trying to be the hero and do too much.

I don't mean this to be a Bowser bashing post. The guy has immense talent. The chances of Esquer giving him a day off in the semifinals are probably next to none but I'm much more concerned about our games in June than the ones today and tomorrow. I think we're going to need him to get back on track if we have a chance to make a deep run in Omaha.

The number of runners that were stranded in scoring position came back to bite Stanford.
