RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 08-22-2022

Thanks for the updates John.  I look forward to your reports.

To go off beach topic; If you find any TV listing/livestream for Friday's indoor match against Lipscomb, please post.  It would be a disappointment to not be able to watch the first match of the season.  Still some unknowns about the starting lineup.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-23-2022

gostanford.com now says both Nashville matches are ESPN+.
Guess I'll have to restart my subscription.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - mbdude - 08-24-2022

From VolleyTalk - Babi Gubbins, class of 2024, 6'3; supposedly committed to Stanford for beach and indoor

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 08-24-2022

Gubbins is ranked # 9 for indoor

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-06-2022

Xolani Hodel is playing in the beach volleyball tournament that is part of the world university games in Maceio, Brazil.  She's paired with Torrey Van Winden (age: 24) who played beach at UCLA and CalPoly.  One of three teams representing the USA on the women's side.

In pool play, they split their two matches, beating Japan but losing to Spain.

They will play a team from Argentina in the first elimination round.

Some of the match videos are posted here:

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-08-2022

Hodel and Van Winden won their first elimination match, but had to forfeit today due to injury.
I don't know who is injured....   Hope it is not serious in any case.

ETA:  Apparently Torrey Van Winden re-hurt her knee and they are being cautious.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-10-2022

Freshmen Ashley Vincent and Kelly Belardi named AVCA Beach VB First and Second Team Junior Beach All-Americans.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-17-2022

At the FIVB U19 Beach World Championships in Turkey, incoming freshman Sophie Kubiak and partner Bailey Showalter are in the quarterfinals.
As are next year's freshman, Ruby Sorra (representing Canada) with frequent partner Emma Glagau.
The future looks bright!

ETA:  Both are through to tomorrow's semifinals.  They could meet in the finals.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-18-2022

Both "Stanford" teams lost their semis; the Canadians (Sorra and Glagau) won the third place match.

The other American team (Massey/Pater) lost the final to a Ukrainian team.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 09-26-2022

22 players on the roster this year.  A picture of what that looks like (though I only see 20 in this photo):

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-16-2022

Bumping this up with some random news.  Xolani Hodel paired with Hailey Harward for an FIVB event in the Maldives.  In the qualifier, they won their first match, but lost the second 22-20, 22-20.  Hopefully she enjoyed the trip.

The rest of the team (except the indoor players, of course:  Belardi and Andersson) was in Pismo Beach this weekend for some off-season competition.  I have not heard any results, and apparently the pairings varied, but on Saturday they were:

Ekstrom/Reilly
Morris/Wilson
Sharp/Harvey
Vincent/Kubiak
Matheson/Converse
Clarke/Doucet
Turner/Gamberdella
Vetter/Bierly

The team has had picture day, but the roster still lacks pictures of the freshmen.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-19-2022

Hodel & Harward are also signed up to play in Dubai later this week; one of six American womens teams.  I assume they'll need to go through the qualifier again.
ETA:  There are actually two FIVB events back-to-back in Dubai, and Hodel/Harward are signed up for both.  Oct 22-25 and Oct 27-30.

Stanford will send two pairs to the "inaugural AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach Championships in Huntsville, Alabama".  A fancy invitational exhibition; Nov 4-6.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-19-2022

It would be interesting to see what's motivating Hodel to do this international play.  Based on the schedule it looks like she will be in Dubai all next week.  I hope she finds some time to study.  With Maldives (isn't that near Sri Lanka) and Dubai, the travel itinerary is costing big bucks.

Thanks for the updates John.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-21-2022

I don't know if USAV is subsidizing Hodel & Harward to any extent.

Stanford has three pairs at the "West Coast Championship" this weekend:

https://ncaa.volleyballlife.com/tournament/6240?from=now&tab=teams

in Manhattan Beach.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-24-2022

In the first Dubai event, Hodel & Harward won their two qualifier matches to make the main draw.
They went 1-1 in "pool play", to finish third in their pool.  But they won their lucky loser match to get into the elimination rounds.
Won the first, lost the second, to finish tied for 5th.  An excellent result, earning them FIVB points (and money, if they could accept it).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-29-2022

In the second Dubai event, Hodel & Harward only needed to win one qualifer match to make the main draw, which they did.
In "pool" play, they again went 1-1, and again finished third in their pool.  Unfortunately they lost the next match, and ended up tied for 17th.

Meanwhile in the Cayman Islands, Stanford Canadian recruit Ruby Sorra is playing in the Norceca U23 event (with her usual partner, Emma Glagau).  They went 1-1 in pool play (plus a bye, so listed as 2-1), and will play a quarterfinal match tomorrow.  (Only 7 teams in this event.)

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 10-30-2022

Sorra & Glagau (#1 seed) smacked down the #2 seed from the Cayman Islands, 21-4, 21-7. Yikes!

They will meet a team from Trinidad & Tobago in the semis.  The other semi is two American teams.

ETA:  Sorra/Glagau easily won their semi:  21-9, 21-11.  Then finally met their match in the finals, losing the third set in extra points (18-21, 21-11, 22-20).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-03-2022

Wow, #42 and #45 seed?   I'm sure there are some top teams not going to this tournament.  Either Stanford will not be as good as I expected this year or the AVCA committee didn't seed Stanford's two teams correctly.  We'll get some indication if the seeding is correct tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 11-04-2022

Both teams won their first games
