August 1st is the first day formal offers can be sent out.Â
Just how do formal offers differ from informal ones? Are schools bound to honor them whereas they aren't with informal ones?

I guess this is what a formal offer looks like?

And the new social media rules allow coaches to send them to recruits via social media.
Send offers in envelopes on formal stationery. A Stanford offer should not be taken lightly :)

Would be karmic if we took a couple from Alabama, given what Kiffin has been saying about Tennessee.

Though it looks like a professional letter, but I wish someone paid more attention to design. Specifically:
1) In an era of an abundance of beautiful typefaces, you don't think they could have done better than Times New Roman (I think that's what it used). Stanford has (somewhat confusing) guidelines as far as fonts for written materials:
https://identity.stanford.edu/overview/fonts
The text probably should have been in Source Serif Pro (
https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Source+Serif+Pro) or Crimson Text (
https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Crimson+Text)
2) I generally don't like fully justified text; it is better to leave it left justified and ragged on the right.
3) They should have aligned the right margin to the right margin of the #OnlyAtStanford hashtag
4) The one place where they do have a ragged justification is the left column, because it is a list of individual bowl games. But it doesn't look good to have one column be ragged and the other justified. It probably would have been best to right justify the column of bowl games and leave the left ragged. Generally speaking, you want centers to be aligned and edges to be ragged.

If you believe 247 Sports, we are not going to have much of a recruiting class.
We are underdogs for most of our top uncommitted recruits, including Sarell, Little and Black.

My recollection is that Equanimeous did not take any AP classes his senior year and that essentially closed the door without him even applying. He did reconsider Stanford in December (there was talk with the coaches), but by then it was too late. He had the academic chops looking at his junior year, but did not follow through unfortunately.

If you put stock in 247's crystal ball (which I generally do not), then you'll be happy with the recent developments there. All of the recent predictions for Sarell, Little, St.Brown, and Molden are for Stanford.

The most remarkable thing about this link is that Irish Envy has 55 pages worth of recruiting dialogue on
one uncommitted player in the 2017 class.

Now that ESPN has updated the ESPN 300, I figured I'd do a quick Mills update. They still way undervalue Mills, but not by as much. He is now the #4 pocket passer (#8 QB overall) and the #82 recruit overall. That's at least within spitting distance of the other QBs.Â
To sum up:Â
- Scout: #1 QB/# 3 overall
- 247: #1 QB/#21 overall
- Rivals: #2 QB/#28 overall (behind Clemson commit Hunter Johnson, the #4 overall recruit)
- ESPN: #8 QB (#4 pocket passer)/#82 overall (behind Johnson, McCaffrey the Younger, Penn State's Sean Clifford, Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa, Texas A&M's Kellen Mond, LSU's Lowell Narcisse, and Miami's N'Kosi Perry
Appreciably less shameful than the last round of ESPN rankings, but still an outlier on QBs overall. Having him behind Johnson is fine--he's been one of the top QBs on all services for a long time, and they're both terrific. And Tagavailoa is hardly egregious, as all the services agree that he's a top guy and probably the top dual-threat guy out there (#3 QB/#34 overall on Scout, #3 QB-DT/#56 overall on Rivals, and #1 QB-DT/#34 overall on 247), so picking one over the other is like splitting hairs or whether you prefer a pro-style passer or a dual threat guy. And Dylan McCaffrey is generally a top 50 overall recruit (except for Scout, which has him at 101), so whatever.Â
But Clifford, for example, is the #7 pro-style QB on Rivals (#163 overall), the #10 pro-style QB on 247 (and #360 overall, just a 3 star), and the #18 QB on Scout (#245 overall). Narcisse is similar (#13 QB/#183 overall on Scout, #7 dual-threat QB/#250 overall on 247). So is Mond (#3 dual-threat QB/#172 overall on 247, #6 QB-DT/#101 overall on Rivals, #9 QB/#95 overall on Scout). So is Perry (#9 QB-DT/#319 overall on 247, #17 QB-DT on Rivals (doesn't even have an overall recruit ranking), and the #17 QB/#238 overall on Scout).Â
