Doesn't Brandon Wimbush seem like a real possibility?

Perhaps the first ever recorded correlation between Ray Bradbury and The Hills. Well played.

I don't see a citation that Stanford has offered Wimbush and he has indicated that he wants to decide soon.  The reason that I asked is that I don't see that Stanford has any outstanding QB offers.  Maybe Coach Shaw is just being very careful about QB offers.

Re: Class of 2015 - StannyBoy - 05-02-2014

Pritchard saw Wimbush throw yesterday. Alabama was also there and offered. If we are going to offer him it will probably be soon. And I am confident he will be getting our offer for QB. White is announcing today at 4 and ASU is expected to land him.

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 05-02-2014

The Rivals story on Wimbush said he is going to camp at Stanford and hopes to get an offer then.  I don't know why a guy with other offers would want to attend Stanford's camp, unless he is very serious about wanting to attend Stanford.  That's my calculus for thinking Wimbush could very well be Stanford's 2015 QB.

there's no way Wimbush is waiting for an offer until camp. That's why Pritchard flew out there to see him throw. If they are going to offer it will be very soon.

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 05-02-2014

Just re-read the Drukarev Rivals story on Wimbush.  He said he was planning on going to the Stanford camp to get an offer, but now says he wants to make his college choice by Jume 17, before Stanford's camp.

Sounds like someone is advising the kid to play hardball with Stanford, by forcing Stanford to offer before they really wanted.  Waiting until the Stanford camp to get an offer is not the ordeal he makes it out to be.  Besides, if he really wants to attend Stanford, he must go through the application process, take two AP classes, and be admitted.  If I were Shaw I'd stick to my guns knowing that if the kid really wants Stanford he'll prove it by going to the camp.  Coaches can't set precedents for recruits pressuring them to hand out offers before coaches are ready.

Re: Class of 2015 - washingtonismoney - 05-02-2014

Well, it's also possible he's getting pressure from other coaches to commit earlier than he might otherwise like.

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 05-03-2014

Two sides of the same coin, and both forces are more than likely at play.  Your scenario also provides David Shaw yet another opportunity to take the high road and challenge his industry to do "the right thing" in the best interest of kids, rather than coaches.

I don't think a 17 yo would take it upon himself to pressure a coach, let alone one like Shaw, to extend an offer earlier than he feels comfortable.  Of course, Stanford could always make an offer conditional on attendance at the Stanford camp, and basically placate the kid whilst also getting what it wants to see, namely Wimbush at a Stanford camp.  If he balks at that, Stanford should just move on and not waste any more time on the kid.

Re: Class of 2015 - Bruce Wang - 05-03-2014

With other positions, he could commit elsewhere and wait and see for a Stanford offer & admission.  Quarterbacks are a different case though.

There's a domino effect to QBs. With other positions, there's a strong opportunity for multiple starters or extended playing time even if one doesn't start. That's not the case with the QB position, where's there's no real opportunity if someone cements themselves (see Nunes and Nottingham).

Because the QB recruit is often the marquee recruit in a class, and because there's usually only one, once one of the top guys commits, there's a ripple effect with other guys falling into place. That's why the top 15-20 guys are wrapped up by the middle of the summer.

Re: Class of 2015 - Spiny_Norman - 05-05-2014

Wimbush has tweeted that he is committing tomorrow.  Finalists - #VTech#OSU#Miami#PSU#BC

Re: Class of 2015 - theashwineffect - 05-05-2014

In all honesty, we don't need guys who put pressure on our model of recruitment. We've had super early QB commits (eg. Burns, March 2012), but they've checked the boxes of our flow -- a flow that's worked monumentally over the last few cycles for QBs.

If we were desperate for a QB, we'd have offered Rosen when he indicated that an offer would seal it. We're obviously not, and I'm willing to trust the staff on this. And I also think that this has to do with the low level of attrition on our scholarships. The Bamas and tOSUs of the world cycle guys left and right. We're remarkable in the sense that our recruits usually stick around, even if only to finish their degrees (and not complete their athletic  eligibility). That really changes our offer structure in that it requires our patience and theirs because the fit needs to be right.

At the end of the day Stanford is Stanford. By virtue of us being on this board we all waited for that big white envelope, regardless of the other factors pushing us to "commit" elsewhere. The right recruits for us are sympatico to that and fit in splendidly in the 94305.

Maybe but let's say after next season Hogan goes pro, Crower graduates, Chryst gets injured, and Burns hasn't figured it out. Who'd be the starter? Dallas Lloyd? I'm pretty confident Shaw will offer someone in this recruiting class.

Besides this being a hypothetical with a lot of assumptions, there is a very tiny chance that a true freshman from the Class of 2015 will have it more figured out than Burns will after 2 years in the program.  The playbook and offense are just way to complicated for that.  The only player since the beginning of the JH regime that could have reasonably played as a true freshman was Andrew Luck and he is a once in a generation player.

Also assuming Hogan went pro you would think Crower would stay since he would have a good shot at being the #1 QB.

Just wondering about Rosen - Mick - 05-06-2014

I was wondering if anyone has actually sit down with him, looked him in the eye, and discussed why he isn't feeling the love he clearly thinks he should be feeling.

That scenario isn't really plausible because if Hogan were to go pro Crower would not leave the program.

It has never made sense to take a QB in this class IMO. I said this about a month or 2 ago a guy I really like for 2016 is Jarrett Guarantano a New Jersey kid he already has some big time offers.

Re: Class of 2015 - slide - 05-07-2014

Stanford has been in touch with Guarantano, but no offer.  I suspect that will be true unless he camps with Stanford this summer.
