RE: Stanford Baseball - skip75 - 05-21-2022

Stanford vs. Arizona State on Weds.  Arizona & Oregon are the other teams in our bracket.

The other bracket has UW vs OSU and Cal vs.UCLA.

Unfortunately, that remains more in question that it really ought to be.

Going into the weekend, Stanford was 4th/5th in the polls, which aren't directly relevant but indirectly so. They'll probably stay about there. Outside of OSU, the others ahead of Stanford also were winning. OSU did lose two of three and finished behind Stanford in the conference standings, but may have had too big a lead in pollsters' minds for Stanford to have passed them.

RPI is the potential problem. During the week, Stanford rose 5 spots, but the last home win over $C caused them to drop from 7th to 8th - or perhaps more accurately Miami's win over Notre Dame was enough better than Stanford's win to allow them to pass us by. Losing 2 straight, or 2 of 3, in the Pac 12 tournament would cause Stanford's RPI to fall back down - perhaps as far as into the teens.

As often is the case, how much the committee weighs the RPI remains an issue. Some years it seems they realize its inadequacies, others they follow it as if it were divine revelation.
Given that Stanford won 2 of 3 at Corvallis and won the Pac 12 championship outright, will that out-weigh OSU's better overall win percentage and RPI to give Stanford the mantle of best team in the west?
It seems to me that both OSU and Stanford have resumes to be top 8 seeds, and the direct results would seem to me to put Stanford first of those two. But as in most years, RPI is an issue.

The dates look pretty brutal for participants. Where will anybody find enough arms? (Roxy Bernstein did say there’s a 10-run mercy rule that kicks in after 7 innings but still…)

Six days later, Baseball America projects Stanford to the #4 see overall, and the Stanford regional winner projected to face the winner of a Maryland regional in the supers.
I'd take that.
2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament Projected Field Of 64 (5/18/22) (baseballamerica.com)

D1baseball has us seeded 6 nationally. Sweeping U$C would likely cement that. But if this season has taught us anything, it’s don’t count your Ws before the final out.

This week's first tournament projection field that I have seen is from D1Baseball.
2022 Field Of 64 Projections: May 22 • D1Baseball

Stanford projected as #3 seed overall, with UC Santa Barabara as the #2 in the regional. Would project to a superregional versus winner of Fort Worth (TCU) regional.
D1Baseball projects 3 Pac 12 teams hosting a regional: #3 Stanford, #4 OSU, #13 Oregon.

In today's polls Stanford is rank #3, #3 and #4 (USA Today's Coaches Poll; Oregon State is #3 in this poll)

RE: Stanford Baseball - Ballbuster - 05-23-2022

The Pac has been able to get at least 3 or 4 teams into regional play. Stanford did play and earn the right to host a regional and or super. Obviously winning the tourney will solidify all that, but all that should have been solidified when they won the Pac title. I don't see any more teams getting into regional play unless they win this tourney. Cal, U of W, and ASU will not be selected if they lose this thing. So jeopardizing position players and pitching for a conference tourney when Stanford, OSU, UO, U of A, and UCLA should be a lock. Selection committee will find a way to get schools with losing records from the ACC and SEC in anyway. All 5 Pac schools should be a lock with conference and overall records.  Kyle Peterson will find a way to justify Vandy winning it all in the end!

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 05-23-2022

You sure you know Kyle Peterson the former Stanford great ?

Yes, he calls games for Vandy on ESPN. Plus he was all over Vandy against Stanford last year in the CWS. Take a look at his twitter page, no mention of Pac baseball!

Five Pac 12 teams are a lock, and none of the others are close.

UW is a bit of an interesting case as they've managed to get their overall record up to 30-24.
Their non-conference schedule was quite weak, including 4 games vs. No. Colo. (9-36), 3 vs Seattle (15-31), 4 vs UCSD (23-30), Utah Valley (18-37), UCR (8-42) etc, leading them to a #86 RPI - 8th among the Pac-12 teams.

If Vandy wins it all in the end, I don't know why they would need justification. I suspect you mean that you don't like them making the tournament with a sub 0.500 conference record. I don't like that in general, but Vandy has a decent case.
Vandy is 35-19 overall.
Vandy has a #5 RPI, 2nd among SEC teams.
Their non-conference schedule included legitimate powers Ok State and Louisville, but also seemed to have played the RPI well with games against stronger teams in weak leagues. All leading to the RPI-rated toughest schedule in the country and #4 non-conference RPI.

There will be more teams in the tournament from the ACC and SEC than seems right (something like 11 and 9), but the worst of those have an overall winning percentage better, and RPI much better, than the best Pac 12 team that will be left out.

------------------------
I don't see a lot of jeopardizing of position players going on, but a conference tournament can be tough on a pitching staff. If there were no tournament, the Pac 12 teams would be playing a three-game series this weekend anyway, and possibly a fourth mid-week game. In the conference tournament, teams will play at least two games. Winning the tournament can take from four to six games. That's also one more than needed to get through a regional, but for most teams fairly similar to the no-tournament alternative.

My recommendation for Stanford would be to treat the first three games like a weekend series, or maybe a midweek game plus a weekend series, but keep pitch counts reasonable. If they happen to still be playing after four games then reach deep into the bullpen and maybe the bats will carry the day. Stanford is probably a top-8 seed regardless of the conference tournament results, so keep everyone on regular rotation and plan for next week

Gotta agree with this. My guess is this is a combination of the Pac-12 network and the conference trying to make a few more $$$. Re WA, most of their quality wins have been in Seattle. Somone should take a close look at those games, esp the strike zone. Disclaimer: I have zero inside info about this.

Injury can happen in any game, so that is where position players are jeopardized in this tourney. I would rather take the rest to a staff and bullpen at this point of the season to prepare for regional play. You have to go into this tournament to win it, so you can solidify being a top 8 seed. There is no guarantee for a top 8 seed, especially if you go 2 and out!

I mean, no surprise.  Esquer did a tremendous job, Williams was masterful, and Montgomery has been awesome all year.

RE: Stanford Baseball - fullmetal - 05-24-2022

Haven't had time to closely follow the team, but I do remember some sort of midseason slump...and now a #4 ranking?  Amazing.  Keep the team healthy and storm the postseason!

RE: Stanford Baseball - CTcard - 05-24-2022

The Stanford announcement that five players made the all-conference "first team" is a little iffy.
There wasn't an all-conference first team and second team. There was a single all-conference team that had 35 players: 10 pitchers and 25 position players.

The biggest robbery was Quinn Matthews (who did get honorable mention).
The third best ERA in the conference, tied for the second most wins, tied for the best winning percentage (both ties with Alex Williams), the sixth most innings pitched, tied for sixth most saves (despite not being in the bullpen until halfway through the season), the second most saves plus wins.
Hard to figure out how he wasn't one of the best 10 pitchers in the league.

The all-defensive team would be tough to hit against - particularly seeing as it has 5 infielders; otherwise matches a real team with a catcher, a pitcher, and 3 outfielders.

Also of note; six true frosh made the all-conference team but NOT freshman of the year Braden Montgomery. [And it's not that the big award winners weren't eligible, Williams (pitcher of the year) and Melton (player of the year) were on the all-conference team.]
Defensive player of the year Adam Crampton also didn't make either the all-conference team or honorable mention. That shows how much defense is valued.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Ballbuster - 05-25-2022

Watching how U of A and UO are handling their pitching. It will be interesting to see how Stanford handles their staff. The bottom three teams in this tourney, basically can go all in with their pitching. Considering they need to win this tourney to get a regional bid. 90 degrees already!
