Just me, or do beach players tend to be shorter than indoor?

I think there is an abundance of shorter players, and they find more opportunity on the beach.  (Half the players may be "defenders".)

Even the beach blockers probably aren't as tall as indoors (on average), since there is bigger premium for mobility in the sand.

So I strongly suspect that is true.

Hodel and Ekstrom are playing (with different partners) at the lower level AVP Waupaca/Oshkosh event next week.  As is Carly Wopat, who hasn't played professionally since 2020.

Lauren Fendrick is playing Hermosa with Zana Muno; Fendrick's first AVP since 2020, though she has played some FIVB events this yea

Well, Hodel & Hildreth qualified for Hermosa Beach, so they will be playing there.  Seeded #14, they take on the #3 seed at 11:10 tomorrow.

Ekstrom & Germann are the #12 seed at the "Waupaca" Open. If they win their first match (8:00am Central Time), they will meet up with Wopat & Spieler (#5 seed).

Yes, by a lot compared to front row indoor players.   The two unicorns in high level beach are Plummer and Klineman.

Thanks for the reminder.   Lauren Fendrick and her partner Zana Muno easily won their first match.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-08-2022

Hodel & Hildreth lost their first match at Hermosa Beach; they play in the contenders' bracket Saturday morning at 9:00am.

Ekstrom & Germann went 3-0 in Oshkosh, and will play in the quarterfinals Saturday.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 07-09-2022

Thanks John. Keep the results coming

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-09-2022

Ekstrom & Germann won their quarterfinal, but lost in the semis to the #2 seed, and end tied for third place (they were seeded #12).

Hodel & Hildreth won two matches in the contenders' bracket, but lost to the #4 seed, finish tied for 7th place (seeded #14).

Fendrick & Muno won their first two, then lost one to drop into the contenders' quarterfinal (9:00am tomorrow).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-10-2022

Ruby Sorra (& Emma Glagau) went 1-1 in pool and lost their first elimination match in Lecce, Italy (tied for 9th).

Ekstrom & Germann's semifinal match is here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_9PGHwxnrQ

The first three minutes are guys raking the sand.  Then there is three minutes of player introductions. Then the action gets underway.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-12-2022

BTW, I believe Ekstrom & Germann qualify for the Manhattan Beach main draw because they finished in the top 4 at Waupace.

Another commit. 6-0 from Branson HS in Marin County

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-20-2022

Ellie Sampson, class of 2023, has received her early admission to Stanford (class of 2027).
Beach player, 6'0".

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 07-20-2022

Thanks John.  Here is an article about Sampson written back in December of last year.

https://thegatorseye.com/8299/showcase/committed-ellie-sampson-to-stanford/

Here's what I found interesting.  In reference to coach Fuller, Sampson said at the time, "I can say that my coach has never had anybody not get in that was committed..."

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-31-2022

A preliminary beach roster is out (no freshman included yet):

https://gostanford.com/sports/womens-beach-volleyball/roster/2023

Ekstrom is the only grad student listed.  I wonder if that Daily article was wrong about Dailey and McKinney?
Or maybe plans changed.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-07-2022

Ruby Sorra (2023 beach recruit) won the Ontario Beach Volleyball championship.  Sorra is the taller (6'0") player on the winning team.  Her partner, Mikayla Law-Heese plays for UAB, and is listed as 5'7".

Three set match, 16-21, 21-19, 15-8

There is a "medal ceremony" at the very end.

(I haven't watched it all.)

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-12-2022

Charlie Ekstrom and partner Skyler Germann are playing the semipro event at Seaside, Oregon.  They won their first elimination round match, but dropped the second, 21-17, 14-21, 19-17.  (Actually outscored the other team 55-54.)

They will play next weekend at Manhattan Beach next weekend.  They're in the main draw based on their third place finish at Waupaca.

Carly Wopat is also playing at Seaside, and has made it the round of 16 (playing Katie Spieler, who was Karissa Cook's partner for a year or two). So they will continue to play tomorrow.  They are entered in the qualifier at Manhattan Beach.  As are two current beach sophomores, Emma Morris and Taylor Wilson.

ETA:  I totally missed the Kate Reilly also played at Seaside (partner: Megan Gebhard), and they tied for 9th, same as Wopat/Spieler.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-18-2022

The freshmen have been added to the roster:
https://gostanford.com/sports/womens-beach-volleyball/roster

Includes indoor players Andersson and Belardi.  22 players total.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-19-2022

Kate Reilly (with Megan Gebhard, who played indoor VB for MIT) made it through the MBO qualifier and were seeded 29th.  Lost in the first round to #4 seed.  No results yet from their contenders bracket match.

In the third round of the qualifier, they knocked out sophomore Emma Morris and alum Sunny Villapando.

Wopat & Spieler also went through the qualifier, seeded #26, lost to 7th seed Sarah Pavan and Mackenzie Ponnet.

Ekstrom & Germann were seeded 30th, lost to the #3 seed.

Waiting to see if any of them survive to play Saturday.

Coach Lauren Fendrick (with Hailey Harward) were seeded 11th, won their first match.

Update:  Reilly, Ekstrom and Wopat all went 0-2 and tie for 25th.
Fendrick went 1-2, tied for 17th.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-20-2022

Meanwhile, in Canada...
Recruit Ruby Sorra is playing in the Canadian Nationals with Megan McNamara.  They went 3-0 in pool play yesterday.
No results from today's elimination rounds yet.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 08-21-2022

Sorra & McNamara won the Canadian National Championship!

Admittedly, the top players were at Manhattan Beach; but still an impressive accomplishment.
The championship match is somewhere in this 8-hour live stream:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdps5CsLQ90&list=PLWTF2yGGXbKLgTSoec2CYncdBKsiIuOl4&index=1

ETA:  Their semifinal starts at about 2:18 and the final at 5:24.
