Up 15-13 so far in the first set. Best we've looked in several weeks thus far. Even announcers sound impressed. We are not setting Kurt at all. Blyshov and Harvey have been getting lots of attacks and been great. I'm hoping we can at least steal a set to get some confidence.

We lost steam and lose set 1. Still much better effort than SMU.

Not quite good enough.
Watching Hambly’s face on the sideline, you can almost hear him thinking, “How can I recruit players like this to Stanford?” I feel his pain.

Kurt is 2 for 15 with 5 errors hitting -.200
Set 2 was there for the taking. As mentioned by other posters just not good enough. Etzler can make great plays and then just has some total letdown defensive lapses for being libero. One plus is only one service error so far. Parks has looked fine for the most part.
Hambly seems pretty cool and calm in his interview. Likes the effort and fight.

Much closer match than I was expecting. Played much better than at SMU.

Stanford only drops to 13th in the AVCA poll. Still ahead of Texas A&M (14) and Penn State (16) and just behind ASU (12) even though Stanford got swept by ASU and Penn State and only won one game vs. Texas A&M.
But the Cardinal now gets a chance to build back up its fundamentals and confidence and (we hope) stack some wins. Of the 18 remaining conference games, only 3 are against current top 25 teams and 2 of them are Louisville and Pitt. The other is North Carolina. Nowhere to go except up right now. Stanford is tied for last in the ACC.

I can’t really call getting swept a morale booster, but this was definitely better. Serving even looked good.
If they can consistently play like this they can likely hang with tier 2 - I.e. top teams not named Pitt or Nebraska - and should be able to usually beat tier 3 and down. If they can be consistent.

The Pitt match was incredibly encouraging to me. Getting back Sayer would be helpful. I don't have any idea about her timeline for returning.

Students should be allowed to, you know, be students in the spring.
Yeah, the fan part of me might enjoy a premiere tournament in the spring, but trying to extract ever more competition from *student*-athletes, with ever more demands from the athlete side of things, with the accompanying practice schedule, travel, etc, at a time when the students should be taking a heavier course load so that thry can lighten up during the fall, competitive season just reinforces the fact that the schools, the universities, the programs, and the fans, are merely paying lip service to the fact that these are purportedly supposed to be students. It then becomes really hard to turn around and then say that there ought to be some restraints on treating this like a professional sports relationship.

There is a long dry spell without competitive volleyball from mid-December to mid April. If you asked the players on the team if they like the idea, my bet is 100% of the players would respond with a resounding yes. I'm sure Hambly checked with the players before agreeing to the offer.

I'm just as sure Hambly didn't check with the professors before agreeing to the offer.
Assuming he did check with the players, it could have sounded like this to a player: "We have a chance to play in a tournament in the spring. If you participate, we'll be able to schedule practices and you'll gain more experience and be in a better position to have more time on the court. Are you in or not?"
Attending classes and labs is a "long dry spell"? They could avoid that by joining a pro league or three and phoning in their education.
Do you have a proposal for how the students could attend classes and labs to make up for a quarter and a half each year, traveling 33,000+ miles, plus living out of a suitcase, in a hotel or plane or terminal?

Like it or not, it seems to me that any WVB coach who turned down the opportunity to participate in a high profile, off-season event that included the other programs listed would, as the saying goes, be committing coaching malpractice.

Glad to see Stanford was invited. What a great list of programs. I’m sure the players and coaching staff are excited about the opportunity.
That is more important than a few posters on this board who just choose to complain all the time. College sports currently is what it is whether we agree with it or not.

If I post something you are going to disagree with it. I get it. It's stupid but that comes with posting on a sports message board.
First, there are no classes going on during travel for non-conference matches.
Why don't you tell Hambly and the administration to do away with the WVB program so the players can exclusively concentrate on classes? There's no need for wasting time practicing, playing matches, and traveling.
For that matter why don't you tell the administration it should eliminate all sports in the ACC so the student/athletes don't have to take time away from their studies.
