Chloe Clardy may turn out to be just the change-of-pace guard to help out against quicker opposing guards.

Except perhaps when we played a good Chinese University team and of course the USA National Team, the exhibition games have done little in preparing us for stronger non-conference opponents.  I don't understand Tara's rationale for scheduling games that don't count against highly inferior teams, such as Dominion.

We have only one game to prepare for an outstanding Indiana squad.  I would have like to have seen two decent opponents before Indiana.

We're not in the ACC until 2024-2025 (and the extra traveling), so why no Tennessee and South Carolina this season?

Wow.  That schedule is perhaps the least challenging pre season schedule I have seen before.  Indiana and Duke are the most competitive teams.  Belmont and Florida State at a Las Vegas tournament could be quality teams.  But then, depending on what Gonzaga looks like, the competition falls off a cliff for the next six games. Portland was a quality team last year but I doubt they will be too much of a challenge.

Why this?  It could be a conscious decision to east off the difficulty while a new system is installed and while freshmen get their college feet under them.  Or it could be that these were the only teams that would agree to play us.  San Diego State, Gonzaga, Portland, and Davis I understand--we have relationships with those schools.  Why Morgan State?  Why Albany?

We will have to rely primarily on doing well in the Pac 12 to create our resume for the NCAAs.  Just the opposite of 15-20 years ago where the out-of-conference schedule was our only claim to fame.

That road trip--flying from San Diego to Gonzaga and playing the Zags without a practice day in Spokane is going to be tough.  Hopefully the game in San Diego will be early and the game in Spokane will be late.

When does Pac12 play start? Last year we had Cal game right before Xmas and conference games around NYE. 
We have non-conference games Dec 20 and Dec 31. Will be a nice break but will push back back conference play even further.

I think wins over Duke, Indiana, FSU, and Gonzaga would bode well for our resume. It's a lighter schedule than recent years. Would have liked to see one true road game at a power 5 school. Like at Tennesse or SC but oh well.

Good question.  My guess is January 2.  We played on January 2 last year, but that was our 3rd conference game.  Not sure how they will fit everything in.

I sure would like to see Ogden catch fire during her freshman year.  We need her.

The schedule is a bit odd.  We play Cal Dec 29, then come home to finish our preseason with Morgan State on New Year's eve.

For the second year in a row, we finish the season with a difficult road trip--to the Oregon schools.  Shouldn't that kind of thing alternate?  We were away last year, why aren't we home to finish this year?

Then Feb 16-18 we have a single home game for Cal.  Could we move one of our out-of-conference games to that weekend?

Yes, Joe, a few of us noticed this when Betts announced her transfer.  There is a limit to how many posts a team can play, and they are glutted now.  Betts had limited minutes with us, but one or more of the UCLA posts are going to have the same problem that Betts had with us competing for playing time.  I presume the very talented Dugalic is coming back from injury this year.  Bessoir could play a 3 on offense, given her long range shooting.  But if they play three posts, we will need to figure out how to take advantage of that when they are on defense.  We had better have a couple of reliable three point shooters to go with Jump.

Teams are going to defend UCLA the same way they defended us last year.  The defender on Jones sags way off to clog the lane and double team the post.   And they basically were daring Jones to shoot a 3.  They’ll do the same to Rice.  So Betts better keep the ball high because if she brings it down like she did her freshman year she’ll get double teamed and stripped.

Emily Bessoir played the wing for her German club team and German Junior National team before entering UCLA.  Similarly Lina Sontag played guard before joining UCLA.  Bessoir and Sontag played for German Senior Women’s team at the FIBA 2023 Women’s EuroBasket Championship in June.  Bessoir played at wing and Sontag played shooting guard.

Bessoir had to play the 4 and sometimes 5 because UCLA lacked height on the roster.  The additions of Lauren Betts, Amanda Muse and the return of Angela Dugalic and Izzy Anstey from injury give the Bruins depth in the post and allow Bessoir and Sontag to play at their normal wing position.

That's good to know. 

6'4 BESSOIR as a natural SF makes sense to me
given her propensity to shoot the 3, 
but 6'3 SONTAG and quite bulky at that
as a natural SG is really a surprise to me.
