Chryst and Burns waited dutifully while Hogan was a starter for 3+ years.  Costello knows he's going to have to wait between 1 and 3  years (most likely 2+) before he gets a chance to start.  The question is what happens after that.  But a lot can happen between now and a subset of Costello, Mills, and West are battling it out to succeed Burns or Chryst.

I'm confident Shaw is setting the proper expectations with these guys.  And the contract Luck just signed can't hurt.

Mills:
•Rivals: trending very slightly down (now #2 QB/#28 overall; was #2 pro-style QB/#22 recruit overall in February)
•Scout: trending way up (now #2 QB, #16 overall; was #11 QB/#101 recruit overall in February)
•ESPN: trending way down (#13 QB-PP/#226 overall; was #9 QB-PP/#180 recruit overall)
•247: trending way up (now #2 pro-style QB/#27 overall, was #6 pro-style QB/#98 recruit overall in February)

McCaffrey:
•Rivals: trending way up (#4 QB/#45 overall; was #6 dual-threat QB/#114 recruit overall)
•Scout: trending slightly down (#5 QB/#47 overall, was #3 QB/#39 recruit overall in February)
•ESPN: trending slightly up (#1 QB-PP/#19 overall; was #1 QB-PP/#25 recruit overall in February)
•247: trending up overall (#3 pro-style QB, #30 overall; was #2 pro-style QB/#46 recruit overall in February)

I mean, Mills crushed Elite 11, so 247 and Scout significantly revising their ratings makes sense.  But how does ESPN look at those results and drop him to the 13th pocket passer and by 46 spots overall?  That's insane.  I know we rightly rag on ESPN recruiting rankings here, but that's just an absurd outlier of a ranking.  Maybe ESPN hasn't updated its rankings since Elite 11/the Opening, and his drop was based on noise and other camps?  You'd think since they broadcasted Elite 11 and the Opening that they'd have an incentive to push the guys that did well there, but oh well.

In any event, while McCaffrey the Younger has done well for himself, I feel awfully lucky that our coaching staff went for Mills and that he's already been accepted.

I wonder what a retrospective analysis of the different services would uncover.  Perhaps starting with the '14 class and going back, say, ten years.  I tend to favor 247, but for the life of me I couldn't tell you if their scouts are any better than those at Rivals or Scout.

Here's one that predates 247's entrance into the rating game: http://mgoblog.com/content/rating-raters-reviewing-recruiting-services-success-and-bias

Ummmmm - Redrum - 07-15-2016

At some point is this all like off-season training?  We do it to keep in shape for when real football starts.  Why do we care about off-season rankings which we then slice and dice.  Do we think that Shaw and company are as insecure as we are?  I can see the quasi-applicability of the Offer Theory. Coaches have skin in the game. All the fun is in the pre-LOI day musical chairs for offers and the competition between coaches and staffs.

This isn't a specific criticism of posters in this thread, it just amuses me this side-industry peddling morsels just because we're hungry.

More on Davis Mills - JohnR34231 - 07-17-2016

He may be our most hyped QB recruit since Elway.

http://www.scout.com/college/football/recruiting/story/1686635-there-s-a-new-no-1-qb-for-scout

I checked the TV pre-season HS games in hopes that we would be able to see Davis in action.
No luck, but as a consolation prize we get to see the one we chose not to offer, Dylan McCaffrey.

Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 07-19-2016

In a recent interview, Colby Parkinson said "they are working on Darnay," referring to Darnay Holmes.  It seems his issue with Stanford is that he wants to enroll early.  Does anyone think Stanford has a shot of making Holmes get comfortable with the idea of graduating from High School in the Spring?  Is he filling out a Stanford application to leave that door open to him should he be admitted?

Has Holmes passed the point-of-no-return? - Redrum - 07-19-2016

I haven't watched Holmes commitment since he opted elsewhere. Was he judged admissible at the time or admissible if he completed a checklist of academic items. But often what happens when the recruit opts elsewhere,he stops hitting the items on the application and qualifications checklist (i.e. retaking tests, adding AP classes, etc.)  It might be too late. Does that apply to Holmes?

Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 07-19-2016

As a Stanford commit, Parkinson knows all about the prerequisites to get into Stanford, so it seems unlikely that he would be trying to get Darnay if he had reason to believe it was unrealistic.  Of course, I have no clue how much he knows what Holmes is doing vis-a-vis his Senior classes, etc.

Re: Class of 2017 - BobK - 07-19-2016

Holmes is a long shot.  For most of the reasons mentioned here

Re: Class of 2017 - Bruce Wang - 07-21-2016

Admitted already?  Does Rick Shaw give high priority recruits with strong academics early consideration?  Just wondering.  Not against it.  I think it's a good idea especially at the QB position where you want to get early commits - and position them to help recruit their classmates.

Yes, according to one of Drukarev's tweets.

It appears the Scout rankings have already been revised to reflect the Opening finals.  He's now the #1 QB and the #3 recruit overall on that service.  Wowza.

OK, quick Mills update, since there's been movement on 247 as well.
So, an emerging consensus that he's the top QB in the class, though ESPN still thinks 20 QBs are better than he is.

Go home, ESPN. You're drunk.

Re: Class of 2017 - BostonCard - 07-26-2016

So, apparently people think Colby Parkinson is a good fit for our offense:

http://247sports.com/Bolt/17-for-17-Scheme-Fits--46417621

Quote:1. Colby Parkinson, TE, Stanford - Stanford throws to its tight ends more than their receivers. They may be the lone big-time program that does that. Elite stud Kaden Smith, the nation’s No. 2 tight end in the 2016 class, realized that. Parkinson, who tore up The Opening, did as well. He has a silly good NFL upside (6-7, 240 with hands and speed). The nation’s No. 1 tight end with the super academics made the brilliant decision, as good as anyone, and cashed in his lottery ticket at the place that knows how to use his spot the best.

Maybe we don't always pull a lot of 4-star wideouts, but as long as we keep landing 4- or 5-star QBs, TEs, RBs, and offensive linemen, I kinda think our offense just might be OK.

This is getting beyond the strict thrust of this thread, but it will be interesting to see how the offense does going forward - though of course bringing in 4/5 star QBs, TEs, RBs, and OLs goes a long way towards making an offense OK despite anything else.

However, in 5 years of David Shaw, I would probably break down the offenses as 2 that were really good (2011, 2015), two that were poor (2012, 2014), and one that was ... okay (2013).

The pessimistic view is that with a fourth year starter Hogan, an OL that was returning 4 of 5 and three 5 stars, a 4 star and a 3 star, and the emergence of McCaffrey as the best threat in the nation - the offense basically had to be good despite any possible deficiencies in scheme, play calling, etc.

A year ago there was a storyline out there (that I didn't believe, but wouldn't reject out of hand) that we had an offense that was extremely complicated. This might be fine for a senior, multi-year starter QB and a bunch of experienced guys but would collapse with less experience.

This year our experience level at QB and the OL takes a nosedive. It may be a good test of this theory.

------------------
And as to your actual point on wide outs, I think this is true.  Stanford runs an offense that probably is not overly appealing to a budding star WR, in just the same sense that it is appealing to RBs and TEs. But, Stanford's offense also relies on star wide outs less than most - so that is a reasonable trade off.

Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 07-27-2016

What comes first, the dynamic WR-oriented passing attack or the dynamic WRs?  I say it's the latter and Stanford WRs will be featured prominently when they are able to make big plays consistently.

That said, I think Francis Owusu is capable of doing more than he has been allowed to do, and maybe Rector as well.  I have high hopes for Donald Stewart, but the reality is Stanford hasn't had a highly touted WR recruit make a consistent outsized impact other than Ty Montgomery in quite a while.  Hopefully Irwin will show signs of being that kind of WR in 2016.
