It's Jordan Perez, presumably an ILB, from the San Diego area. Perez has an interesting profile. He was at camp today, so he must have impressed. From a rating perspective -- they are all over the place. ESPN loves him: they've got him as a four star. 247 thinks he's barely a three star. Rivals and Scout are in between. His offer list is solid, with BYU, Boise State, Oregon State, and Miami (FL) all reportedly in the mix (with others.)

Perez certainly seems to fit the mold of a Stanford recruit, at least on the field, based on that video.  He doesn't exactly shy away from contact. 

I love how Stanford doesn't seem to care about the ratings of its prospects and how they do so many evaluations at their own camps.  They judge guys wearing pads, not in t-shirts and shorts at all these 7 on 7 passing tournaments. 

Most rating services will be wowed by speed and overlook physicality for positions like LB and TE. While speed is important, it's often more important to be able to get to the right spot and be a physical force when there, or be able to move people where they don't want to go, as Shannon Turley would say.  Stanford may not get all the guys with the amazing combine numbers, but when any player gets hit by slightly slower players who are more physical, speed is mitigated.  So by playing a physical style, Stanford plays to its strengths.  It really does seem to have found a formula for success that can be replicated.

Offers like this apparent one to Jordan Perez demonstrate just how on the same page the Stanford coaching staff is.  He's got pretty good quickness, not elite speed, but seems to be the most physical guy on the field.

I agree it has become virtually impossible to judge Shaw's classes by recruiting rankings because the coaches don't really seem to pay too much attention to them when they decide who to offer. So I guess we just have to trust their judgment. So far it has worked out pretty well.

Oregon State and BYU have also shown good ability to find overlooked defensive players.

The recruiting rankings provides a sense of probabilities of success with important caveats with regards to Stanford (physicality, grit, and smarts).  I get excited about them because I want to know who we will cheer for before everybody else.

Seems to me that the most important aspect of each class is that position needs are covered.  We can get in trouble if there's a shortage of academically qualified players in a given position for a couple years.

I would guess we'll take five. We're light at ILB. Skov and Lancaster leave after this year, meaning just Tarpley, Martinez, Hemschoot and Palma in 2014, with Tarpley and Hemschoot being seniors that year. So we need numbers there, and 3 at ILB is pretty reasonable.

I think you missed at least one other LB, Jimmie Swain, who has us in his top-5.  I have not seen the YouTube clips on all these guys, but I thought Okereke looked very impressive.

Does Stanford by policy honor all of its offers, regardless of injury? If so, does that inherently mean we'll be "stuck" with a few kids every year who get injuries before their senior year?

Of course, in this day and age, ACL recovery outcomes are almost as good as sprained ankle recovery outcomes. Hopefully the kid heals quickly (for his own sake.) Either way, you gotta think this injury makes him reconsider the 40 year impact of his college choice.

Sorry for Devante, but ACL's don't mean the guy isn't going to recover and have a good career.

I'm sure at least some people remember John Elway had one before he arrived at Stanford. He turned out OK.

Just read a Cal reporter post that Downs plans on being an early entry.  Given Stanford doesn't take EEs, this seems to call into question where Stanford Stands with him.
