Giants will sign a backup catcher. There is no way they break camp with Bart and Sabol as their only catchers.

As for Correa, I wonder what would have happened if Giants had not idiotically scheduled a press conference prior to him having his physical? They could have quietly dealt with the issue and perhaps renegotiated. Probably would not have made a difference. But still, a big mistake in the process.

IMO, SF has to find another backstop (probably via a trade).

As for Correa, given the difficulty the Mets are having negotiating with Correa re: an adjusted deal, I highly doubt that SF would have had any better luck trying to redo their agreement.  If I was a Mets fan, I would still be confident that Cohen will figure out a solution.  However, the Twins are lurking in the background.

Having said that, yes, the Giants learned a hard lesson regarding future free agents - do not schedule a press conference until the medical exam has been completed.

Cohen learned the same lesson; e.g., speaking to the press and confirming a free agent before all the facts were in. The only difference is that the Giants had a positive (but erroneous) medical report from the Twins and Cohen had lead information from the Giants. Thanks to the Giants that it was uncovered at all. To me, Correa was an odd fit with the Mets. They already have a terrific shortstop and three very good third basemen.

Giants need two new catchers, IMHO. Bart would be a serviceable backup. He doesn't hit or field well. Had the third most errors among NL catchers last year. Less range, weaker arm. That's not good. Add in his .660 OPS and...yeah. Bailey hit .225 in AA. Not answer.

BTW, speaking of Joey Bart, and just looking at the Giants' 2018 draft, they took 40 players and four have made a major league roster. Two of them, Bart and Villar have contributed, and Hjelle has a negative WAR so far.  Of the teams in the division, the Giants did the best, and Arizona did the second best in that draft with their 1st and 2nd round picks making the major league rosters, both outfielders. One, Alex McCarthy is doing okay, the other terrible. Padres are next, with five picks making the majors, three with negative WAR, and the only one who made it is a fifth outfielder playing for Cleveland and an okay reliever now playing for Kansas City.  Oddly, the Dodgers did the worst in that draft. Only two selections have made the majors, though their 7th round pick hit two HRs in 13 ABs.  Their first round pick hasn't made it past High A after being traded to the A's and Mets.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 01-08-2023

Bailey played at Eugene last year not Richmond.

Nice call on the 2018 draft. I just took at look at Wikipedia to see who was selected that year.  Overall, it is as weak a group as any recent draft.  A cursory look at the “notables” revealed no players who are big names today.

Cohen ‘s situation not remotely the same. First, he already has a loaded deck.  Second, but/for scheduling the press conference prior to his physical, the Giants potentially would have been able to try and quietly rework the deal.  Once they cancelled and it got out that opportunity was gone. And it had to have left a bad feeling with Correa towards the Giants. Moreover, there was no reason to jump the gun on scheduling. It’s not as if there is a time limit.

I don't see why his loaded deck matters here. The Giants tried to quietly rework the deal and were soundly rejected, which is why Boras took Correa as quickly as he could to the Mets, so he could fool the most over-the-top owner in professional sports into buying "Correa-mas." Of course it left Correa with a bad feeling, but so what? Now he has the bad feeling against the Mets. The Giants didn't jump the gun, they thought they had a deal and were mistaken. There's a difference.

Jim Bowden was a GM for 16 years.  In a very balanced article he was highly critical of the Giants for scheduling the presser before the physical.

Jim Bowden went to the playoffs one time in the 12 years he oversaw the Reds, despite the fact that they had gone to the World Series just two years prior to his arrival. Bowden also ran the Nationals into the ground. But he was nothing if not opportunistic. In those years, he became famous for giving outcasts a second chance; e.g., when Tampa Bay kicked Elijah Dukes off the team, Bowden hired him and when Dmitri Young was kicked off the Tigers, Bowden hired him and when Jose Guillen was kicked off the Angels for fighting with the manager, Bowden hired him too. Maybe Bowden will scold Farhan for not hiring Trevor Bauer. But let's save the best for last. Bowden resigned when the FBI was looking into his skimming money from Latin ball players (with ass't GM Jose Rijo). As the Nationals GM, he knows all about physicals and what you can find in them. He hid the fact that Majewski took multiple cortisone shots into his ruined arm as he offloaded him back to the Reds.  As a writer, Bowden also advocated for a brobdingnagian contract for colossal failure Chris Davis.

You'll forgive me if I take anything Bowden says with a grain of salt.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 01-08-2023

I agree with Mick.  I stopped reading anything written by Bowden sometime ago.  Never one to allow facts to get in the way of a narrative he was pushing, his track record was decidedly poor.  The Athletic has a number of excellent baseball writers.  Bowden is definitely not one of them.

And no, I did not read the article Lex referenced in his post.

I am not a Bowden fan either.  But he was a 16 year GM.  So, he has a little experience in this. The article focused on the process more than anything else.

I tend to take a little more stock of comments made by those that have actually done it.

And it’s common sense.  The press conference is the coronation.  By scheduling they gave every impression it’s done.  That should not have occured prior to completing the physical, so as to assure it is done.  By doing so, they greatly shortened any time they had to renegotiate. And made it much more difficult. I suspect it also killed any chance they have now. Although, I suspect it was slim anyway.

I’m not saying there would have been a different outcome. I am saying they made a rather large “process “ error. In an organization that talks a lot about process. Course, there is, to my knowledge no analytic that might have helped give them the mathematical equation for what happens if they jump the gun on the presser and then learn of a real problem. Maybe if someone asked Sabean, he would have had some input. But what does he know. He’s just a baseball lifer. Weak computer skills, no doubt.

Still. I get to some, Zaidi can do no wrong…….

Zaidi’s weakness, IMO, is his belief that his way is the only way (at least that is the impression I get from the guy).  While he may be the smartest person in the room, he certainly doesn’t have all the answers.  There are numerous paths to creating a sustainable winner.  The best decision-makers are those who surround themselves with individuals who bring different points-of-view to the process.  Being open to listening to those ideas is a critical factor in creating a successful management environment.

Nope, I am definitely not in the “Zaidi can do no wrong” camp.

Hubris might be too strong a word to use to describe the Correa screw-up.  However, it was a great example of cart/horse - which comes first.  Regardless, I don’t believe it would have mattered.  I think Correa/Boras would have moved on once SF said, “We want to take a second look at the deal”.
