[/quote] This doesn't surprise me at all that he won't be in our Class of 2017. The entire situation was strange. It sounds like he wasn't admitted in 2016 so how could he be guaranteed a spot in 2017 class? He talked like it was a sure thing, but I can't believe that Shaw & Co made any guarantees. Who knows what kind of grades and score he would have gotten this year and whether that would be enough for him to clear admissions especially if the staff isn't pushing him as hard as higher touted recruits.  It is probably a smart move for him to take the bird in hand rather than wait for the cardinal in the bush.

I agree completely. This decision made sense all around, especially with Nashville being just 3 hours away from his hometown, and admissions being uncertain (no matter how confident he or the coaches may have been).  From looking at the Vanderbilt depth chart, it seemed like he could have a chance to play early at FB, and maybe rotate in at LB early, too.  I'll be rooting for him, especially since our series with Vanderbilt won't start until he exhausts his eligibility.

Oh, thank goodness.  And heck of a job by Mills to get his application in early!  I hope he's telling the other commits/possible commits to do the same.

Not everyone is ready to have their application considered this early.  Some will need test scores (or better test scores), some will need 7th semester grades.

New 247 rankings are out. The new #1 and #2 overall players? Both OL that Stanford has a good shot (if not the favorite) for. http://247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/RecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool

Sarrel is #1 and Little is #2. And to be clear, that's not among OL, that's OVERALL.

Parkinson also jumped a ton, to #16 (and five stars), Mills is #26, Heimuli-Lund at 103. Multiple other targets on the list s well.

The jump in Mills's stock is great to see, and expected after his terrific showing at Elite 11/The Opening.  I posted the various rankings back around signing day, but I'll update it for Davis as well as Christian's little brother:

Mills:
•Rivals: trending very slightly down (now #2 QB/#28 overall; was #2 pro-style QB/#22 recruit overall in February)
•Scout: trending way up (now #2 QB, #16 overall; was #11 QB/#101 recruit overall in February)
•ESPN: trending way down (#13 QB-PP/#226 overall; was #9 QB-PP/#180 recruit overall)
•247: trending way up (now #2 pro-style QB/#27 overall, was #6 pro-style QB/#98 recruit overall in February)

McCaffrey:
•Rivals: trending way up (#4 QB/#45 overall; was #6 dual-threat QB/#114 recruit overall)
•Scout: trending slightly down (#5 QB/#47 overall, was #3 QB/#39 recruit overall in February)
•ESPN: trending slightly up (#1 QB-PP/#19 overall; was #1 QB-PP/#25 recruit overall in February)
•247: trending up overall (#3 pro-style QB, #30 overall; was #2 pro-style QB/#46 recruit overall in February)

I mean, Mills crushed Elite 11, so 247 and Scout significantly revising their ratings makes sense.  But how does ESPN look at those results and drop him to the 13th pocket passer and by 46 spots overall?  That's insane.  I know we rightly rag on ESPN recruiting rankings here, but that's just an absurd outlier of a ranking.  Maybe ESPN hasn't updated its rankings since Elite 11/the Opening, and his drop was based on noise and other camps?  You'd think since they broadcasted Elite 11 and the Opening that they'd have an incentive to push the guys that did well there, but oh well. 

In any event, while McCaffrey the Younger has done well for himself, I feel awfully lucky that our coaching staff went for Mills and that he's already been accepted.

And I also support Stanford no early enrollment policy because I believe that's the best for students in the long run.

It appears the Scout rankings have already been revised to reflect the Opening finals.  He's now the #1 QB and the #3 recruit overall on that service.  Wowza.

As long as one of them plays well, this doesn't seem all that bad.
