Mercury News seems to think Otto Lopez (SS/2B/CF) and Amir Garrett (LHRP) will take the 25th and 26th spots on the roster, at least until Ray and Cobb are healthy. Lopez will fit right in, he was the worst-fielder and one of the worst hitters on the Buffalo Bison AAA IL team, also poor OPS (.630 in AAA). He did, however, have six hits in 10 ABs with the big league club, and he's very comfortable at 2B. Terrible fielding averages at SS, 3B and CF. Only 1 error in 32 games in the Dominican Winter League, so...there's that.

Zaidi strongly implied that the Giants are done with acquiring major free agents. In short, tomorrow's the first full squad workout, Farhan doesn't want to make changes at a late date, and essentially signaled to Boras that unless his pricing comes down significantly, the Giants aren't interested in Snell, Montgomery, Bellinger or Chapman...all of whom Boras represents. Zaidi says they've liked the recently-signed Otto Lopez for a long time.
Fun fact: The Giants are second only to the Dodgers in free agent spending this year, according to the article.

Did Boras go too far out on a limb?
He has a long track record of getting his clients top dollar. Could this be the year in which he finds the resistence to overpay from MLB front offices is too strong to overcome?

Could be. Two of the four are deeply, deeply flawed. Snell won the Cy Young, but has only pitched more than 130 innings in a season twice, and half of his seasons were losing seasons, plus he led the league in walks and he's injury prone. he's 31 and his agent wants a 9 year contract. Bellinger is similar in that he's only had two really great years, five years apart, and he had a three-year mid-career slump. He adjusted, but his exit velocity and hard-hit rate declined significantly, and he's playing in the most hitter-friendly ballpark in MLB outside of Colorado (similar to Kris Bryant). Jordan Montgomery's never been an all-star, he's 19-17 with a 3.38 ERA in the last two years as a starter. 1.144 WHIP, which is strong. But do you pay BIG Boras Bucks (BBB) for a #3 starter? Farhan won't. Not this year anyway... ;)
Which brings us to Matt Chapman. Terrific, gold glove third baseman, good, not great hitter. Boras wants BBB for him. If you look at JD Davis's splits, his first half was superior to Chapman's season averages. JD tailed off badly last year, but that's not usually JD's pattern. His career first half OPS is .777, career second half OPS is .776. In fact, JD usually finishes with a bang, his career Sept/Oct OPS is .813, second highest. JD makes $6.9 million, and Chapman would be more than twice that. And the Blue Jays are the only other suitor for Chapman's services. And...does anyone remember that JD Davis was considered a fielding whiz earlier in the year?

Soler
Hicks
Lee
Murphy
Cobb (exercised club option)
Their contracts total $217,250,000. I’m not certain who else is included to reach the $280,000,000 figure.
Last year, SF signed 7 free agents:
Haniger
Conforto
Rogers
Manea
Pederson (excercised qualifying offer)
Stripling
Jackson
Their contracts totaled $193,150,000.
As one can see, it isn’t how much you spend, it is on whom you spend.
Zaidi has failed to move the organization closer to the standard established by Sabean. He should be fired.

I think one more free agent is in the offing, probably either Snell or Chapman. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report thinks the Giants will land BOTH Snell and Chapman.

1B Wilmer Flores, 12th, 1 OAA and LaMonte Wade 25th, -3 OAA (Donovan Solano is #19)
2B Thairo Estrada, 1st, 20 OAA. Trade target Ha-Seong Kim, 7th. Mauricio Dubon and Mookie Betts tied at 21st. Former Giant 1st round pick Christian Arroyo, 26th.
3B JD Davis, 11th, T5 (with Matt Chapman) at 5 OAA (Evan Longoria was 20th)

Glad the Giants didn't get JDM. At least Soler rakes at Oracle, career .929 OPS/136 OPS+ here. JD's career OPS is .637/43 OPS+ at Oracle, it's his third worst ballpark. BTW, Martinez made a counteroffer that the Giants didn't want to meet. So he would have come here.

Still a big number, $30 mms. this year, same next year...but not the 12 years/$264 million -- the highest media number I saw tied to Bellinger.
Montgomery's basically a #3 starter...and Chapman -- tough call. Davis's 1st half was better than Chapman's year (x .5), but Davis just tanked so badly in the second half.
Still, the Giant's spring training games to date (0-1-1) look as miserable as I thought they would. Melvin sounds slightly alarmed.

The combination of the Dodgers closing their wallet after Ohtani and Yamamoto, Yankee uncertainty and the collapse of the regional television structure has resulted in a free agent market that favors short, high dollar contracts. One might think that SF would be a player in this type of environment. I guess not…….
