Not fair to make that comparison. In 2016, the only reason Dunning made that switch was because Hodson was no longer available, therefore Stanford couldn't run a 6-2 anymore. I am doubtful that if Hodson were healthy, that change would have occurred. Not to mention, Plummer was an oppo at that point. When Hodson was out for the season, it was the first time she had every played outside. No way that would have happened if Hodson were still available to play.
With this year's team, no need to change anything up. Rubin had one terrible offensive game, but you take her out and you lose all the great things she brings in the back row. Stanford just needs to learn to harness its momentum and not shoot itself in the foot with service errors. It's not the fact that we had so mamy service errors... it's when they happened.

Rubin and Francis seem to be the most obvious vocal leaders and Rubin had a bad day. It was a little like the match against Florida without Baird, we just seemed to be missing some spark or cohesion to get over the rough spots. Kipp is clearly our best player but I hope to see more leadership and momentum changing plays from Elena Oglivie. I may be asking too much because she is great already but I feel like just a few more Hentz-like momentum plays per match would make a big difference in bringing the team to that championship level. It is early and the schedule they are playing now is brutal so I am not panicking. I think the team will continue getting better and will learn how to get over the hump needed to be at that super elite level. On to the next incredibly tough match!

For those who watch my videos of the games on Youtube, I screwed up the Nebraska game. Left off the first half of the first set. Will fix that by 7 pm left coast time with any luck. My apologies to faithful viewers.
A second note: as far as I know there is no recording of the Minnesota game. Pac-12 networks screwed up. If anyone has a source, please pm me.

It's true Plummer had not played OH previously. Actually she didn't play OH at the prep level either. There was no guarantee at that point Plummer could learn a new position in the middle of the season. I read an article her parents where stunned to learn Plummer was moving to OH. Dunning could have stayed with the lineup of Keefe and Vanjak at OH. He could have also continued to use two setters. Stanford was not doing bad, just not playing at a NC level. It was a bold move on Dunning's part to make those changes in the middle of season.
The reason I ask the question about changes for the current team is I have no good ideas for any changes. Is Stanford playing at a level to win an NC or get to that level of play? Maybe. I expect Rubin to get back on track so I'm nowhere close to the panic button based on one bad game.

As I recall the story was that Dunning made the change in the middle of a *match*, without having ever practiced the new alignment. Now that was a super bold move!

"Switching from a 6-2 to a 5-1 offense in the third set, freshman setter Jenna Gray matched her career-high with 35 assists. She also recorded three kills, seven digs and her first collegiate block. Senior setter Kelsey Humphreys, who remained in the lineup as a defensive specialist, finished with 11 assists and six digs."
We lost that match to Arizona 1-3, which was only the 7th conference match of 20. We had lost the previous match to Utah 1-3.
But we beat Arizona and Utah in the rematches, both 3-0. And Humphreys came around, and actually set the championship kill vs. Texas.

I was watching a B1G sports show this morning. A WVB coach said next year they will play conference matches with three schools round robin on weekends. Each team will play the other two teams. All matches will be on the same court at the school designated as the home team.
I don't know what the ACC will do for WVB. I'm pretty sure the result will be less conference matches at Maples.

Louisville finished at #2 in the nation last season, losing to Texas in the championship match. There will be some competition in the ACC, even if it doesn't stack up to the Pac-12 historically.
As of Sept 10th matches, in the top 10:
#2 Louisville
#5 Stanford
#8 Pittsburgh
#10 Ga Tech
Duke received token votes outside the top 25.

Yes, the ACC has some top teams. Their bottom teams drag down the conference average.
Looking at the average Pablo computer rankings for the end of last season, the ACC is noticeably lower than the other Power 5 conferences. (Scraped this from richkern.com):
- Big Ten 46
- Big 12 48
- SEC 48
- Pac-12 49
- ACC 83
For comparison, the sixth conference is the WCC at an average of 112.
The worst Pac-12 team was Cal, at 132. The ACC had three teams that were lower, Virginia Tech being the worst at 170.

As others have said, the match tomorrow will tell us a lot about the team as well as our chances at hosting postseason until final four.

Only started watching on third set. Very impressed with Miner's setting. Kipp with some big swings but Miner really putting the ball on a platter.
