Quote:I have yet to meet a player in any sport who preferred practice a game. And though I have met people who didn\'t enjoy San Francisco, I can count them on the fingers of one hand. Maybe the the thumb of one hand.

The Redshirting Frosh would prefer more practice to the game, because they won\'t play.  Ditto for the third and fourth string guys with aspirations of moving up to first or second string in the next year.

A bowl game in a baseball stadium in the rain is darn close to no fun.  Playing with one player side line is a pain.  And I am sure the players that got hurt in that swamp are not fond of SF and would therefore exceed your one hand rule.

Besides, these players don\'t get to "enjoy" SF they are still preparing for a football game.  Work travel is definitely overrated.

Does only the travel team go to a bowl game, or does the entire team?  i.e. the RS FR might still get some bowl swag...

I hadn\'t thought about StubHub at all because I wanted to support the athletic dept.  However, after peeking at the availability of locations on StubHub, I\'m very close to buying my ticket from StubHub.  Price isn\'t an issue; location is paramount (I\'ll be bringing my camera; I\'ll want a lower tier, near-front-row seat).  The Stanford ticket office wouldn\'t help me out on available rows/sections over the phone, and that kind of stinks for someone who\'s willing to pay full price for a ticket in the section.  Have I gone off the deep end?

Quote:A common problem with these bowls financially is that the school has to eat the cost of the unpurchased tickets. The bowl payout might offset that cost, but the payout gets distributed equally among all the members of that team\'s conference, so ultimately the school may wind up losing a lot of money by going to the bowl.

Why doesn\'t the conference first use the payout to offset the financial ticket losses that the school sustains and then distribute the remaining amount equally among the other conference schools? Just seems like common sense to not punish a team for earning money for the rest of the conference.

oh, okay. answering my question is this quote--apparently the school is responsible is on the hook for half of its allotment and the pac-10 covers the other half. i guess that\'s reasonable. from http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2010/12/24/stanford-football-updates-on-orange-bowl-ticket-sales-and-harbaughs-contract/

* As of the middle of the week, Stanford had sold approximately 9,000 tickets to the game, which represents more than half its allotment (17,500). That’s important because the school was on the hook financially for 8,750 tickets, with the Pac-10 covering the cost of whatever went unsold from the other half of the allotment.

I sort of wish I had used Stubhub for tickets, although my group ended up getting ones we are ok with (low rows of the upper corner).  The hard part for our group with stubhub would have been there are a lot of us, but I do feel sort of hosed knowing I could have gotten my ticket for less than half what I paid...

This going rate on stubhub is a very bad sign.  For big programs, the base absorbs these unwanted local handouts in addition to their school\'s allotment.

V-Tech has been to South Florida too many times recently, so there is little interest from their end.  And Stanford is..well..Stanford.

Both schools will have extra tickets in their allotment.  Both schools have very little South Florida appeal, and both schools are not doing much to absorb the seating capacity in the system.  It wasn\'t that hard to predict, but the Stubhub prices normally are a reasonable indicator of True Market Value.

Oh well, I suspect the Orange Bowl is banking on the idea that Harbaugh and/or Luck will announce something that will make this a must see (on TV) game for most NFL fans.

If the ratings put the Orange Bowl ahead of the Fiesta and/or Sugar ratings then all will be OK from their perspective.

In some ways fans in the stands are most helpful because they create a sense that the event is important for TV surfers.  Maybe in the future, all of these bowls will resort to images of fans on tarps like they have started to use in Europe.

one problem with both the Orange and Sugar bowls are they are during the work week, if the game was on Saturday the 1st, I (and several of my friends) would have gone.

I think the bottom line for the Orange Bowl is they thought the Stanford would be a much better TV draw (even without a Luck or Harbaugh announcement to draw in NFL fans) than Connecticut and that\'s why they choose us over them.
